Dans l’antiquité, le détroit de Gibraltar était appelé les Colonnes d’Hercule. Les mythographes convoquaient la force et les Travaux d’Hercule pour expliquer ce bras de mer tandis que les savants en faisaient un point de référence essentiel dans la représentation cartographique du monde.

C’est ainsi que le naturaliste Pline l’Ancien présente, au début de l’ère commune, le roi Juba II. Plutarque quant à lui, dans La Vie des Hommes Illustres, n’hésite pas à le qualifier de « plus grand historien qu’il y ait eu parmi les rois » . Ce roi savant, et auteur de traités rédigés en grec malheureusement disparus, a exploré son royaume et en a dressé les richesses et l’histoire.

"In dieser Arbeit wird die (Kultur-)Geschichte zweier antiker libyscher Volksgruppen behandelt, die, im Saharagebiet lebend, als bedeutendste Grenzvölker an der Geschichte Nordafrikas in römischer Zeit Anteil nahmen. Tatsächlich lebten nomadische gaetulische Stämme im nördlichen Saharagebiet außerhalb der römischen Provinzgrenze, aber es waren ebenso zahlreiche gaetulische Stämme innerhalb des römischen Nordafrika wohnhaft. Diese Stämme waren es auch, welche etwa seit trajanischer Zeit teilweise romanisiert werden konnten. Die Garamanten bewohnten hauptsächlich eine Landschaft in der Sahara, die uns heute als Fezzan bekannt ist. (...) Diese Arbeit stützt sich (...) auch auf die archäologischen Ergebnisse, hat ihren Schwerpunkt jedoch im historisch-politischen und kulturgeschichtlichen Bereich. So wird zunächst das geographische Verbreitungsgebiet der Gaetuler und der Garamanten dargestellt. Dann werden die ersten Beziehungen beider Völker zu anderen Mittelmeerkulturen (Phöniker, Griechen), welche sich nachweisen lassen, besprochen. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt im Bereich der militärischen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen beiden Völkern und den Römern liegen, weil erst seit römischer Zeit die Quellen ausführlicher werden."

"In this work, the (cultural) history of two ancient Libyan ethnic groups is treated who lived in the Sahara region as the most important border peoples in the history of North Africa in Roman times. In fact, nomadic Gaetulian tribes lived in the northern Sahara region outside the Roman provincial border but there were as many Gaetulian tribes within Roman North Africa living. These tribes were also partially romanized during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The Garamantes inhabited mainly a landscape in the Sahara, which is known to us as Fezzan today. (... ) This work is based (...) on archaeological results, but focuses in historical-political and cultural-historical things. So initially the geographical area with living places of Gaetulians and Garamantes is displayed. Then, the first relations between the two peoples to another  Mediterranean cultures (Phoenicians, Greeks) are also be shown. On the anthropological origins of the two peoples is also written. After several cultural aspects (religion, settlements, etc.), the historical account begins in chronological form. So it will be explained how Gaetulians and Garamantes ocurred in the history of North Africa since the 3rd century. B. C. The focus will be in the range of military conflict between the two peoples and the Romans, because only since Roman times, the sources are detailed. "

Gaius’ decision to dissolve the protectorate of Mauretania and to depose its client king, Ptolemaeus, led to the outbreak of the Revolt of Aedemon (AD 40). This paper will develop a number of innovative thoughts and hypotheses concerning the extent of this rebellion and its possible impact on the deposition of Ptolemaeus, as well as the role of the Romans in its suppression. The main aim is to explore the connection between this revolt, Trajanus’ famous general Lusius Quietus (cos. AD 117?), and the Baquates, an indigenous Mauretanian tribe. I will suggest that Lusius Quietus was descended from a chief of a (semi-)nomadic tribe who supported the Roman cause during the Revolt of Aedemon. Considering the setting and dimension of this revolt, as well as the unrest in Mauretania at the time of Lusius Quietus’ execution by Hadrianus, I argue that this tribe can be identified as the Baquates. This reconstruction suggests a long-lasting and particularly positive relationship between this tribe and Rome. It allows for a further reconsideration of the relationship between (semi-)nomadic and Roman/sedentary groups in Roman North Africa, to the detriment of one-sided analytical schemes that stress endemic hostility.

The invention of a geopolitical concept: the Strait of Gibraltar in Antiquity (I-III c. A.C.).
The term “Circle of the Strait” was created by M. Tarradell to explain a socioeconomic reality particular to the punic world of the area of Strait of Gibraltar on an specific chronology (fourth-third centuries BC.). M. Ponsich would later extend the chronology of this concept to the Early Empire. Researchers have only started recently to reflect about the unity and validity of this concept for the Punic and Roman republican periods. In our opinion, the necessary process to restudy the concept of the Early Empire (first to third centuries AD) has not started yet. The geologic, climatic and faunal similarities of both seashores of the Strait are undeniable but the term that we are analysing here cannot depend on these similarities. We will discuss how
political geography has been used by researchers of this subject in relation to this area in the Early Empire. On the other hand we will also discuss the use and abuse of the term “Circle of the Strait” in the historiography; it has been used to justify the gaps in the data, as well as a frequent common-place term.

Se presentan los resultados de un sondeo estratigráfico realizado en el año 2010 en el barrio septentrional de la ciudad mauritana, al norte del castellum romano, que ha aportado datos de gran interés para la definición estratigráfica y funcional de la ciudad mauritana. Tras un sucinto balance de las actividades arqueológicas previas en la zona del yacimiento (de Montalbán a El Khayari) se presenta de manera detallada tanto la estratigrafía como los resultados, que han permitido la definición de cinco fases que abarcan del geológico a época contemporánea, siendo especialmente relevantes los resultados de la denominada Fase III o mauritana, fechada entre el año 200 a.C. y el 40 d.C., la cual ha deparado diversos contextos materiales y estructuras con usos de carácter tanto doméstico y artesanal como posiblemente cultual.

El líbico-bereber de las Islas es relativamente homogéneo: se asemeja al alfabeto de Numidia, pero posee caracteres ajenos a esta norma central que, por tanto, funcionan como marcadores alfabéticos. A partir del análisis de estos marcadores en 1389 inscripciones norteafricanas y 115 herreñas, hemos observado su concentración en las estelas del limes y en los paneles rupestres del sur de Marruecos. En consecuencia, proponemos la existencia de un tercer alfabeto líbico antiguo: el meridional, empleado en la frontera presahariana. Tras la romanización, el líbico meridional se extendería hacia el sur, llegando a Tafilalt y al Valle del Draa. Estimamos que, desde estas regiones, llegaría a Canarias tras el cambio de era.

The Canarian Libyco-Berber alphabet is relatively homogeneous: it is like the Numidian alphabet, but it has some non-normative characters that work like alphabetical markers. The analysis of these markers in 1389 North African inscriptions and 115 inscriptions of  El Hierro reveals a concentration around the steles of the limes and the rock panels of South Morocco. Thus, we propose the existence of a third Libyan alphabet: the southern Libyan, used in the pre-Saharan frontier. After the romanization, the southern Libyan alphabet was widespread to the south, reaching the Tafilalt and the Draa valley. From these regions, the alphabet could have reached the Canary Islands in the Christian era.

Funerary commemorations from Mauretania Tingitana are an important source of information on family relations in a Roman province. As in other provinces, nuclear relationships (93% of the total) predominate over those of the extended family (7%). Among nuclear family commemorations, 44% are dedicated by parents, 11% by children of the deceased, 30% by spouses and 15% by siblings. Compared with other provinces, Mauretania Tingitana has an unusually high proportion of descending (parent-child) and lateral (sibling) relations; this may reflect strong familial bonds that already existed in the pre-Roman culture. The inscriptions also allow observations about inheritance, identity, marital age, affection, and gender differences.

Durante las excavaciones de apoyo a la conservación-restauración acometidas en el año 2008 en Tamuda se localizó una pieza cerámica excepcional. Una jarra u olpe con un amplio programa iconográfico relacionado con el ciclo de la naturaleza y de la vida, y con motivos alusivos a la navegación y a los caballos tingitanos. Se presenta el estudio arqueométrico de la pieza, la pro- blemática del contexto bajoimperial de hallazgo y su interpretación como un elemento de carácter mágico o ritual. Este trabajo se complementa con la datación absoluta por termolumi- niscencia, con el estudio de su inscripción y con la determinación del análisis de residuos del vaso (aceite de ricino), resultados que se presentan en varios capítulos de este mismo volumen.

I believe that there was a massacre of the population of Volubilis during the war of conquest: it is reasonable and scientifically legitimate to conclude this from the inscriptions we have discussed. Another, different problem is the inclusion in the scientific argument of two destructions layers (fire) that have not been well published, or are unpublished. Whether this is fire layer, or layer formed by humus, is not essential to affirm the existence of the massacre, which could have occurred outside the city.

This paper provides a historiographic account of the research conducted on ancient Mauretanian
numismatics, starting with the more solid initial stages in the identifying and cataloging of the coinage
–recorded by L. Müller in the mid19th century– and concluding with the later papers covering the monetizing
of the local Mauretanian mints: Babba, Lixus, Rusaddir, Sala, Tamuda, Tingi and Zilil. Despite
the relatively abundant bibliography on these coins, they still remain poorly-known, and the problems
surrounding their production, seriation, dispersion and metrology are far from settled. In this regard,
this paper aims to systematize the historiographic records on the subject matter and to present their updated
status, with the intention of reviving interest in this coinage, which still seems to support some very
rich and appealing courses of action.

En la estrategia científica del Proyecto de la Agence Nationale de la Recherche denominado “Le détroit de Gibraltar, à la croisée des mers et des continents (2010-2014)”, la Casa de Velázquez ha encargado a la Universidad de Cádiz y al Institut National des Sciences de l’Archéologie et du Patrimoine (INSAP, Rabat, Marruecos) la realización de un atlas de pastas cerámicas del estrecho de Gibraltar.
El objeto del trabajo es realizar una herramienta ágil y útil para los arqueólogos y ceramólogos interesados en determinar la potencial procedencia de sus pastas cerámicas de talleres del sur de la península ibérica y del norte de áfrica occidental a través de criterios eminentemente visuales y macroscópicos. Para ello se han seleccionado en una primera fase un conjunto de 50 alfares a ambas orillas (atendiendo a su representatividad y a la existencia de amplia producción científica sobre los mismos), junto a una serie de Grupos de Referencia visuales que son los habitualmente utilizados por los arqueólogos para las clasificaciones del material mueble (ej: “pastas tipo Bahía de Cádiz”, “bética mediterránea”…). De cada uno de ellos se realiza una selección de cinco muestras representativas tanto a nivel tipológico como de los principales tipos de pasta existentes en el taller, de las cuales se presenta un muestrario gráfico de las pastas en fractura fresca y en superficie. Todo ello acompañado de un complemento arqueométrico consistente en la ejecución de láminas delgadas (y sus correspondientes macrofotografías) y de análisis por Difracción de Rayos X e ICP Masas. Es un trabajo colectivo en el cual colaboran diversos investigadores responsables del estudio o de la tutela de los diversos centros de producción objeto de análisis.
Este proyecto aspira a contribuir a solucionar el problema actual de atribución de pastas a regiones productoras y a figlinae, ya que durante el proceso de clasificación de material mueble de las excavaciones arqueológicas habitualmente no es posible realizar analíticas arqueométricas de manera ni inmediata ni generalizada, por lo que un catálogo visual de pastas resulta de gran ayuda.
En esta comunicación se procede a la presentación del proyecto y de su metodología, con el objetivo de dar a conocer a la comunidad científica su interés y potencialidad, y mejorar, en la medida de lo posible, su utilidad antes de su publicación en formato electrónico y en papel, prevista para el año 2015.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es el de presentar un curioso documento que hemos localizado y que contiene una catalogación de las monedas antiguas del Museo Arqueológico de Tetuán redactado en junio del año 1956. La importancia del mismo radica en que por las circunstancias que con posterioridad atravesó dicha institución, desprovista de dirección efectiva durante más de dos décadas y, por el hecho de que el conocimiento de las monedas que el documento registra se encuentra “fosilizado” en la bibliografía científica en 1948, aporta nuevos datos al estudio de la numismática antigua en el norte de Marruecos. En este sentido planteamos la publicación de un estudio preliminar sobre los datos numismáticos, inéditos en su mayor parte, que aporta el documento.

Se aborda la transcripción del alfabeto líbico-bereber canario desde una perspectiva de análisis morfofonológica. Para ello, se parte del corpus epigráfico herreño y se compara con el conjunto continental. A través de este estudio, se constata la presencia de múltiples morfemas del líbico de Numidia en las inscripciones herreñas. A su vez, se detectan rasgos lingüísticos de los dialectos bereberes meridionales, confirmándose el vínculo del alfabeto canario con la variedad presahariana, descendiente del líbico oficial númida. Finalmente, se advierten diferencias ortográficas entre el norte y el sur de la Isla que podrían reflejar variedades diatópicas, diacrónicas y diastráticas. / This study aims to transcribe the Canarian inscriptions from El Hierro island through the Libyco-Berber morpho-phonological analysis view. Our analysis revealed the presence of many morphemes from the Numidian inscriptions (oldest Libyco-Berber alphabet) in El Hierro. Also, islander inscriptions exhibited linguistic features of the Southern Berber dialects, that confirmed the link between Canarian and pre-Saharan alphabets. Finally, our epigraphic analysis showed differences between the north and south of El Hierro. This orthographic disparity could reveal diatopic, diachronic and socio-cultural varieties.

This article examines the sacred inscriptions that military units known as "national numeri" set up in the Danubian provinces between the second and third centuries CE. In the past decades, scholars have considered these regiments, which bear ethnic names such as numerus Palmyrenorum or numerus Maurorum, as semi-barbarian units characterized by the lowest degree of Romanization in the imperial army. However, the analysis of the votive inscriptions set up by these soldiers demonstrates that they often worshipped Roman gods in the same way as legionary and auxiliary troops. It seems that in some cases the Roman officers in command of numeri explicitly encouraged the worship of gods belonging to the soldiers' ethnic background. This fact suggests that military authorities used these cults to enforce the esprit de corps of these units and, consequently, to preserve ethnic features connected to their military skills.

The proposed thesis targets an economic potential of the Roman province Mauretania Tingitana (in present-day Morocco; ca. 42–298 CE). The economic potential can be described as an ability of entities operating within a given territory to stably generate a relatively high income in relation to international competition - within the Roman Empire or wider area. The aim is to present and evaluate both internal and external factors affecting the form of the economic potential. The province is presented in the context of its topography, history, local infrastructure, settlement patterns, and development, or natural conditions within the frame of the basic delimitation in terms of chronology and geography. This study is based on data of various nature, above all, the combination of archeological, epigraphical, and ancient literary sources.

La denominada región histórica o Círculo del Estrecho de Gibraltar constituyó una zona con una marcada personalidad propia en el marco general de la diáspora colonial fenicia de escala mediterránea, e igualmente en la inmediata fase de conversión de estas colonias en ciudades a partir de los cambios de época clásica. Se trata por tanto de uno de los espacios con mayor densidad de poblamiento de origen cananeo y que nos ha legado una historiografía histórico-arqueológica más rica y activa, contando por consiguiente con todos los ingredientes de un inagotable potencial para sumar nuevos datos de toda índole desde ambas orillas de la región.

En este sentido, son notables las novedades particulares o incluidas en procesos históricos más amplios aportadas por múltiples asentamientos tanto pertenecientes a la vertiente atlántica como a la mediterránea de esta región del Estrecho, incluyendo entre ellas aspectos tan diversos como los modelos territoriales y de poblamiento, técnicas y fórmulas arquitectónicas, prácticas funerarias y cultuales, redes y elementos de comercio, tradiciones artesanales, cultura material, etc., entre otros muchos.

En esta ocasión centraremos la atención sobre algunos yacimientos de gran interés complementarios a los ya reseñados, provenientes tanto de la bahía algecireña como de la costa mediterránea occidental de la península tingitana. Cuatro casos nos servirán para ilustrar estas novedades, cuatro yacimientos de diversa tipología recientemente excavados y aún en estado inédito o de incipiente publicación, que constituyen actualmente referencia para algunas de las principales líneas de investigación a escala regional.

En este grupo incluiremos la interacción entre poblaciones indígenas y fenicias detectada en el poblado de cabañas excavado parcialmente en Los Altos del Ringo Rango (Los Barrios), datado en época arcaica, y asimismo la larga secuencia de actividad cultual documentada en el santuario fenicio de la cueva de Gorham, en los acantilados del sureste de Gibraltar (la antigua Kalpe). Por su parte, proyectos aún en curso en el norte del actual Marruecos han posibilitado la investigación de importantes asentamientos costeros como Koudia Talaa (en las proximidades de la desembocadura del río Negro, en Fnideq) o también de los procesos de interacción entre poblaciones fenicias y mauritanas en el propio valle del río Martil, principal arteria de la zona, a través de yacimientos como Tamuda o Kitane. Procuraremos proporcionar una síntesis actualizada de estos casos, que servirán a su vez para plantear algunas cuestiones y propuestas extensibles a un marco regional más amplio.

Una reciente intervención arqueológica en el centro urbano de Ceuta ha permitido la documentación de un sector del complejo industrial
haliéutico del asentamiento romano de Septem Fratres, fechado entre
finales del siglo I d.C. y el primer cuarto del siglo V d.C. Al este del muro
que delimitaba el espacio de trabajo y de las piletas para la maceración
del pescado se identificó una secuencia estratigráfica en la que destacaba un nivel del siglo III d.C. caracterizado por el elevado número y variedad de material arqueológico. Entre estos elementos de cultura material
se recuperó un molde de pastelería, conocido como “kuchenformn”. El
motivo que aparece en la cara interna del molde es una escena de ludi
circenses.

Durante el año 2008 se realizó un transecto en la Puerta Occidental del campamento de Tamuda, que ha permitido obtener datos estratigráficos de gran interés para la datación de la secuencia romana del yacimiento. Sobre estructuras mauritanas correspondientes con la denominada «segunda destrucción» de la ciudad se erigió a mediados del siglo I d.C. el campamento romano, que cuenta con su primera datación estratigráfica post quem en esta intervención. Se ha documentado un taponamiento de la puerta en pleno siglo II d.C., asociado a un incendio, aparentemente generalizado. También se presentan las reformas fechadas en el siglo IV asociadas al cegamiento de los cubos interiores, todo ello unido a una interpretación general de las fases históricas de esta parte del castellum.

A collection of window-panes, vessels and alleged waste from Thamusida has been investigated by OM, SEM–EDS, ICP–MS, ICP–OES and XAS at the Fe–K and Mn–K edges. Glass samples have been characterized as natron-based soda–lime–silica glasses, with low magnesium and low potassium. The results have been compared with 43 reference groups available for ‘naturally coloured’ and colourless glasses of both Roman and later ages. Two main types were distinguished: RBGY 1 (Roman Blue–Green and Yellow 1) and RBGY 2 (Roman Blue–Green and Yellow 2). Given their compositional similarity to the Levantine I or, to a lesser extent, HIMT glasses, the Syrian–Palestinian coast for RBGY 2 and Egypt for the RBGY 1 have been suggested for their provenance. Most Thamusida samples have been assigned to the RBGY 2 type. A small group of Thamusida colourless vessels was included into the RC (Roman-Colourless) compositional field; the latter still being defined. The alleged waste pieces may define a local production that should have been of secondary type. The investigations performed on local raw materials seem to discount the possibility of a primary glass-making site. XAS measurements determined that Fe2+ contents ranging between 30 and 52% are able to assure an aqua blue colour; below 30%, the glasses turn light green or light yellow.

Notre propos a pour objet la mise en perspective de l'économie de la Maurétanie de l'ouest au Ier siècle av. J.-C. à travers l'étude des amphores. De la même façon qu'elle demeura en marge du pôle « punicisant » entre le IVe et le IIe siècle, la Maurétanie de l'ouest ne s'ouvrira pleinement aux productions italiques que dans le courant du Ier siècle av. J.-C., alors que la rive hispanique accueille ces dernières depuis plus d'un siècle. La participation active des souverains maurétaniens à la guerre de Jugurtha puis à la guerre civile romaine n'y est certainement pas étrangère.

Not only does the study of priests in the Roman world belong and concern the history of religions, but this research field is also related to the social and political history. That is why a historic study concerning the priests of a particular space and time can contribute to a better knowledge of their religious, social and political organization. It was this ultimate reason that stimultated the approach and progress of this work.
It is the fundamental aim of this research to expose a historic study of all the priests who are epigraphically recorded in the Roman provinces of Baetica and the two Mauretanies (Tingitana and Caesariensis) from Augustus's reign (included) to that of Diocletianus (excluded).
A list containing the known members of each group of priests is provided alogside the chronology and typology of inscriptions, recruitment criteria, features of the priesthoods, tributes and munificence acts undertaken by the priests. It is presented too a comparative assessment of the priests from the three provinces under discussion. Other questions are discussed, such as the role of the women in relation to priesthoods.
The last chapters contains the epigraphic and prosopographic corpora.

Localisé à environ 35 kilomètres de l’antique Volubilis, le site de Rirha possède une emprise spatiale d’environ 10 hectares. Occupé de l’époque du royaume maurétanien (Ve siècle av. J.-C.) à la période mérinide (XIVe siècle ap. J.-C.), il est à ce titre un excellent objet d’étude pour apprécier les continuités, les évolutions ou les ruptures dans les modes de vie des habitants de la plaine du Gharb, durant l’Antiquité et le Moyen Âge.
Ce premier volume présente un historique des fouilles et des études complémentaires d’archéologie environnementale, menées par une équipe maroco-française depuis 2004. Celles-ci renseignent sur les pratiques des sociétés historiques et sur leur environnement. Les recherches géomorphologiques ont précisé la paléotopographie du gisement ; les analyses palynologiques, anthracologiques et carpologiques, mettent en évidence les réalités d’une plaine occupée par des marais et des bosquets ripisylves, d’où émergent des cultures céréalières et fruitières dès l’époque maurétanienne ; tandis que l’étude de la faune souligne l’évolution des pratiques associant chasse et produits de l’élevage.
