法國國家圖書館藏有一份手稿,三十九頁,名曰“拜客問答”,無署名與寫作時間。《拜客問答》記錄了“中士”之問,“西士”之答,涉及歐羅巴風俗、小西洋黑人等諸多海外信息。通過分析語詞、比堪文本與事件,可判定問答寫作於萬曆三十年左右,西士為耶穌會士利瑪竇,中士則為京城官員。另外,《問答》一書確立了後期艾儒略《西方答問》、南懷仁等所著《西方要紀》和《御覽西方要紀》的核心內容。比對幾份文本,可發現因受眾、傳教形勢的變更,文本亦隨之發生流變。
