Library software

This article describes the problems faced by Librarians during early stages of Library automation in a developing country scenario, with special reference to Pakistan. The paper is particularly interesting for the historical researchers in library automation as well as the early history of computer usage in Libraries during 1990's.

This study assessed the Implementation of Retrospective Conversion of Library Catalogue for Improved Access to Library Resources in Federal University Libraries, South East Nigeria.  Four research hypotheses and research questions guided the study. The research design adopted for this study is a descriptive survey. The total population for this study was two hundred and ninety-seven (297), but one hundred and sixty-four (164) respondents that were directly involved in retrospective conversion were sampled. The major instruments for data collection were observation checklist and questionnaire. The instruments were validated by experts and a reliability study was conducted and analysed using Cronbach Alpha with an overall reliability index of .78. The instruments were distributed to the respondents which comprised the professional librarian, para-professionals, and ICT library staff of the university libraries under study. Out of the 164 copies of questionnaire distributed, 148 copies of the questionnaire were correctly filled and used for this study. Data were analysed using mean scores and standard deviation. From the analysis, the findings revealed that Retrospective conversion influences access to information resources through the access points such as author, title, classification number, keyword search and subject. The findings also show that most human and material resources for effective implementation of retrospective conversion are available in these libraries except for system analysts and software engineers who are usually sourced from outside in most of the libraries. Such resources include human resources, computers, scanners, alternative power supply amongst others. Skills such as importing of document, word processing, internet searching, cataloguing and classification skills are needed from the library staff for effective implementation. The study concluded that in order to remain relevant in the present age of information explosion, libraries should make efforts to have their library catalogue digitally converted. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that the government/government bodies which established the universities should make adequate financial provisions for these institutions as a whole and the university libraries in particular so that they can procure adequate resources for effective implementation of retrospective conversion towards enhanced access to information resources. Also, the researcher recommended that the university library staff members should endeavour to utilize different opportunities to update their existing skills and competencies in this regard.

type of libraries at disposal for PWGL and Open Music, we move on to describe the process of realization that has led to the creation of the library, consequential to
composition and analysis practice, and resulting by a work extended over the years, and still in progress. Afterwards the library structure is described in summary, and
contemplated composition techniques are listed, afferent to Dodecaphony, Serial and Post-serial period, Pitch-Class Set Theory and other processes for developing
pitches and durations. Finally some tutorial patches are showed, followed by a concise conclusion about aims and use of the library.

The absence of standard library software is one of the main hinderance in the effective automation of libraries of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of Pakistan. A review of the literature does not provide the actual requirements of the libraries in Pakistan related to library software and highlights the absence of library software selection criteria. This paper explores the opinion of the experts about the current status of library software, problems faced by the libraries and needs relevant to library software in order to suggest a sustainable solution for the automation of the libraries of HEIs of Pakistan. This study was conducted using qualitative approach and three focus groups were conducted in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. The participants of all three focus groups comprised librarians from HEIs, Library and Information Science (LIS) experts with experience in designing and implementing library software, LIS educators with experience of teaching library automation and computer science professionals having experience with library software. A purposive sampling was made in this regard. A discussion guide was prepared on the basis of literature review and expert opinions. Data were analyzed qualitatively. The analysis of focus groups revealed that there was a shortage of library software and the libraries of HEIs were still in the process of automation. Few libraries were using standard software but most of the libraries had implemented cataloguing module only. The non-availability of standard library software, regional languages, lack of awareness, lack of funds and lack of vision in the top management of HEIs were the common problems causing hinderance in the effective automation of the libraries. The experts suggested formulation of a consortium under the umbrella of HEC that takes the resposibility of development and distribution of the software.

Presentamos el nuevo Servicio de descubrimiento Qfind, basado en el software Vufind, un motor de búsqueda de código abierto para Bibliotecas que permite a los usuarios buscar y navegar más allá de los recursos que puede ofrecer un catálogo en línea tradicional (OPAC). Los Servicios de descubrimiento (Web-scale Discovery Service WDS), importan metadatos en un índice unificado y muestran los resultados de búsqueda en una sola plataforma, funcionando como punto único de acceso a todos los fondos de una o más instituciones. En nuestro caso, exhibimos la integración de tres plataformas con características diferentes como son: Koha, DSpace y AtoM, en una sola interfaz de búsqueda, un trabajo realizado conjuntamente entre la Biblioteca Laura Manzo y el área Servicios de Comunicación de la Universidad Nacional de Quilmes.

This study examined the impact of Libmas on library services in Kerala. A self- designed questionnaire was distributed to both professional and para-professional staffof the libraries. Collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistical method. The results of the analysis showed that Libmas has favorably impacted their libraries.
