Agroforestry, a combination of a woody (shrub/tree) with an herbaceous component (crops/pasture) is considered an important tool to mitigate and adapt agrarian systems to global climate change. This fact is based on the capacity that AGF systems have to preserve C already accumulated in the woody component but also to increase C sequestration in a tree-less system when trees are planted. Nitrate and CO2 emissions can be reduced by the consumption of the biomass of the understory in forests with high fire risk, but also for the better use of fertilizers in more open systems that will contribute to mitigate the negative effects of this fertiliser inputs on GHG atmosphere release. Resilience is also improved as biodiversity in AGF systems is usually higher than in tree-less systems.

The aim of the research was to monitor and assess landslide hazards by remote sensing data processing and GIS spatial analysis. The automatic classification of remote sensing images provides many useful land use information to combine in a GIS environment with other spatial factors influencing the occurrence of landslide. The upper part of Susa Valley, in the Italian Western Alps, was chosen as test area because of a large variety of remote sensing data available by ISPRS WG VIII/2 with the aim to exchange information and experience in the field of geomatic techniques. Over the 20th century, reduced land cultivation has caused an extension of fallow land in several European countries, which has led to a decrease in biodiversity. Knowledge of dynamic vegetation processes and of the impact of human activities on biodiversity provides the basis for land management recommendations, as well as for wildlife management programs. We analysed land-use changes on a small protected island (Ushant, Bretagne, France) using historical documentation (1844) and aerial photographs taken in 1952 and 1992. Over this period, especially during the last 40 yr, Ushant underwent a complete transformation from rural landscape to extensive shrubland. No cultivated area remains, grazed areas were moved from the coastal fringe to the core of the island, while over 40% of the island is fallow land. The relationship between current sheep grazing and vegetation suggests that grazed meadows used to be close to inhabited areas, i.e. 150 m outside the villages. These results allowed us to analyse landcover potential related to changes in the intensity of sheep grazing. The scenarios highlighted by our method provide an objective framework for further assessment of fallow land management.

This paper addresses sale as a specific case of real property transfer. Special emphasis is on the administrative procedure and legal framework of such property transactions in Slovenia. The article is concentrated on the rural land sale with the main aim to present and expound the models of transactions for international comparisons, and for comparisons of the real estate transfer among different real estate markets. A detailed transfer of the ownership of rural land is presented, where standardized modelling language UML serves for visualization of the models. The outcomes of this research are presented on different UML diagrams. Besides the comprehensive presentation of the transaction procedures also the roles of involved actors are introduced. The modelled transaction could be the base for the simplification and optimization of the rural land transaction procedures; and consequently, development of the rural land market. Furthermore, such models can serve as the starting-point for the rural land market analysis, providing basic information on spatial planning, progress in land policy, land management, real estate appraisal and property taxation.

The sustainable development of rural areas faces nowadays the challenges of global changes. The need to adapt land and landscape use to the new social, economic and ecological demands (non-farm activities, employment in rural areas, forest and agro- related tourism, real estate pressure, etc.) requires an analysis of the land multifunctionality and of the multipurpose land management strategies. The paper aims to review the concept of land use and landscape multifunctionality and to review the role of multifunctional land use in Rural Development Policy in Bulgaria.

The emergence of digitized land system has been carried out for years. This sector has been spotted as the leading factor in the corruption cases of Bangladesh. In this paper we have designed a framework that will add both transparency and efficiency to the current land management system. This paper presents a new modeling technique that represents data for the current land management system through a user-friendly and digitized map based system. We are proposing to scan the current paper based maps and convert the images into scalable vector graphics (svg) format into database. It allows nice visual presentation of maps and easy searching facility. User friendliness, data transparency and cost efficiency were the prime focus in designing the framework for the new Web-based Land Management System.

На архивных материалах показано, как советская политика 1930-х гг. изменила жизнь манси Северной Сосьвы. Концептуальные рамки заданы работой Дж. Скотта о проектах государственной модернизации «отсталых» обществ. Охарактеризован политический курс советской власти в отношении коренных народов 1920-30 гг., показана природа социальных преобразований. Индустриализация страны проводилась за счет раскулачивания крестьян и командной экономики. Развернувшаяся инвентаризация природных ресурсов сопровождалась их национализацией. С этих позиций рассмотрено земле- и водоустройство в бассейне Северной Сосьвы, проведенное в 1930-1932 гг. Коллективизация на Тобольском Севере представлена как череда мер по оседанию, сселению и объединению коренных жителей в колхозы. Показана непоследовательность, некорректность и поспешность действий власти, обрисованы последствия принудительных реформ. Внедрение новых практик (полеводство, животноводство) происходило в ущерб традиционному укладу хозяйства манси. Детально рассмотрено осуществление первой большой программы по оседанию и сселению полукочевых хозяйств Березовского района в 1940-41 гг. Это привело к резкому сокращению традиционной поселенческой сети, в первую очередь за счет селений манси. Описана деятельность Сосьвинской культбазы, сыгравшей ключевую роль в продвижении советской культуры и индустриальных технологий в бассейне Северной Сосьвы.

The Upper Basin of the south rim of the Grand Canyon presents an excellent cross-section of different federal agencies’ (Grand Canyon National Park and Kaibab National Forest) approaches to land management. Though the environment and cultural landscape are relatively similar between the two jurisdictions, different priorities lead to dissimilar land management practices. Evidence shows that divergent land management practices between agencies have profound effects on the level of disturbance across the archaeological landscape.
In order to inform the discussion of disturbances across the Upper Basin, this thesis presents a vulnerability study that identifies areas of disruption in the archaeological record and the stressors that ultimately caused this damage. The study uses vulnerability theory, satellite remote sensing data, and GPS data, to analyze trends in ground disturbance and forest use that directly influence cases of inadvertent vandalism to archaeological sites. As a result of this analysis, a disturbance framework for the Upper Basin is presented that draws heavily from current ideas in vulnerability theory. Using this framework, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of federal land managers on archaeological disturbance. The results of this study not only provide evidence for differential preservation in the Upper Basin, but also highlight the use of GIS as a low-cost tool for federal employees to solve complex management issues. In addition, they show the utility of borrowing from human ecology and other fields to structure approaches to archaeological issues.
