Hebrew Manuscripts

During the fifteenth century Jewish litrugical texts and customs were reconsidered by rabbis living in Austria, Moravia, and neighbouring countries. The writings of two famous rabbis that were active in Brno for some time during the earlier half of the fifteenth century, Eizik Tirna and Jisrael Bruna, fragments of liturgical manuscripts found in the bookbindings of Christian books and documents in Moravia, and marginal glosses in the Trebic machzor all attest these attempts to correct the text of Jewish prayers. Im mittelalterlichen Leben der Juden spielte das Gebet eine wichtige Rolle. Es herrschte die allgemeine Überzeugung, daß Gebete absolut unerläßlich für die Sicherung des Überlebens sowohl für den Einzelnen, als auch die Gesellschaft sei-en. 1 Zudem war eine verbreitete Ansicht, daß es sich beim Beten nicht um einen spontanen Ausdruck religiöser Gefühle handle; es sei im Gegenteil nötig, vorherbe-stimmte Texte zu rezitieren, und zwar sowohl in der richtigen Reihenfolge als auch zu den richtigen Zeiten. Falls das Gebet nicht richtig vorgetragen werde, sei es ungül-tig und unwirksam. Fromme Menschen verwandten damals viel Zeit und Energie darauf, festzustellen, wie der richtige Text von Gebeten lauten solle. 2 Heutigen Lesern mag es verwunderlich erscheinen, wieviel Gründlichkeit mittel-alterliche Juden etwa Fragen hinsichtlich der korrekten Aussprache eines bestimm-ten hebräischen Wortes widmeten oder dem Problem, ob die Konjunktion " und " in einen Text gehört, obwohl dies in keiner Weise dessen Sinn ändert. Es ist wich-tig, gleich zu Beginn zu unterstreichen, daß mittelalterliche Juden ein derart kleines Detail in Texten hebräischer Gebete sehr ernst nahmen, da sie glaubten, daß die Wirksamkeit eines Gebets genau davon abhinge. A great number of valuables Biblical Hebrew manuscripts are conserved in
Spanish libraries. They are of various content and some of them are
specially significant for many reasons, one of them having been used in the
editing of such important Polyglote Bibles like the Complutensian or the
Antwerp Bible. A new catalogue describing the Hebrew collections in the
different libraries in Madrid has been published. An overview of El Escorial
and Complutensian University Libraries was given in Hebrew Studies 2004.
Now, the others main libraries collections of manuscripts in Madrid is
given, analyzing the most significant manuscripts in
these libraries.

Cod. hebr. 17 contains an opulently decorated copy of Sefer Miṣvot Qatan (SeMaQ) and is a typical 14 th-century Ashkenazic manuscript from the German area of Europe. This is shown by the workmanship of the parchment, the structure of the quires and the script that was used. The text also contains references to the German origin of the manuscript. The separate listing of the commandment 'To bind tefillin on the head' emphasises the practice among German Jews of saying two blessings while putting on their tefillin. This manuscript is a commissioned work written and decorated by a professional scribe. Although he strived to give the book a homogeneous appearance overall, there is a radical change of page layout from fol. 227r onwards. By adding new columns, the existing comments became more visible. Consequently, SeMaQ now resembles a commentary volume inspired by Latin manuscripts. This change 'modernised' the book and improved its function, taking into account that the existing aesthetic concept had to be abandoned.

ABSTRACT:Our paper studies one of the most interesting manuscripts of medieval Jewish philosophy, a unicum that is housed in the British Library, Heb MS Add 27559. This fascinating manuscript, in part a version of a work compiled by Ṭodros Ṭodrosi, in Trinquetaille in the 1330s, is a Hebrew anthology of logical and scientific texts, written by Greek and Arabic philosophers, some of which are translated into Hebrew for the first time by Ṭodros. The paper sheds new light on this manuscript through an examination of the section on natural science that Ṭodros devoted to the study and explanation of Aristotle’s Physics and which comprises more than a third of the entire manuscript. We uncover Ṭodros’s aims and methodology in this section on physics (and, to some extent, in other sections as well), and sketch a clear picture of the ways in which Ṭodros intended to assist his contemporary readers in the study of natural science. In Sefer Tagin Fragments from the Cairo Genizah, Marc Michaels transcribes and recreates fragments of arguably the earliest found manuscript of the manual for sofrim (scribes) concerning the decorative tagin (tittles) and 'strange' letter forms that adorn certain words in the Torah. Comparing these found fragments against other core and secondary sources of Sefer Tagin (including several pages of a new secondary source), Michaels establishes the most likely readings to assist the reconstruction of the fragments and shed light on the original intention of the author of Sefer Tagin.

עשר שנים לאחר המיפוי הראשון של ייצוג מגדרי בטלוויזיה לילדים בישראל, מבקש המחקר הכמותי הנוכחי לבחון מחדש את ייצוגי המגדר בארץ. כחלק ממחקר בין-לאומי בשמונה מדינות נבחנו שלוש שאלות מרכזיות: הראשונה מתייחסת למאפייני תוכניות הטלוויזיה לילדים בכללם; השנייה מתייחסת למאפייני הייצוג המגדרי של הדמויות הבדיוניות; והשלישית, שהיא חידוש ביחס למחקר הקודם, מתייחסת למאפיינים המגדריים של צוותי ההפקה של התוכניות עצמן.
הממצאים הושוו בהצלבה בממד הזמן (2007 לעומת 2017), ובממד המרחב השידורי (ישראל לעומת מדינות אחרות, גופי שידור ציבוריים לעומת גופים פרטיים וגלובליים).
המחקר בחן שבעה ערוצי ילדים מרכזיים בישראל בסתיו 2017 :ערוץ הילדים, ניקלודיאון, דיסני, זום, הופ!, ניק' ג'וניור והטלוויזיה החינוכית הישראלית )טח"י(. מכל ערוץ נדגמו שני ימי שידור, סה"כ 213 שעות, שבהם 666 תוכניות (633 תוכניות בדיוניות) ו-625,2 דמויות (568,2 דמויות בדיוניות).
קווי המתאר המגדריים שעלו מן הניתוח מגלים כי חלה ירידה של 6.2% בייצוג של דמויות נשיות, כאשר בהשוואה בין-לאומית ישראל מוקמה במקום האחרון בשיעור הדמויות הנשיות. למרות שיפור בכמות הפקות המקור (עלייה של כ-8%), הרי עדיין מעל 4/3 מהתוכניות ששודרו היו מחו"ל. בדומה למתרחש בעולם, רוב מוחלט (95%) מן התוכניות היו בדיוניות (fiction), תוך היעלמותן הכמעט-מוחלטת של תוכניות לא-בדיוניות (fiction-non). מיפוי דימויי המגדר של הדמויות הבדיוניות גילה ירידה במספר הדמויות האנושיות ומנגד עלייה במספר המפלצות והיצורים המיתיים. בקרב הדמויות האנושיות נמצא ייצוג עודף של לבנים והמשך של ייצוג מגדרי סטריאוטיפי, שבו דמויות נשיות מונהגות על ידי בנים, רזות ומצייתות לציפייה החברתית להיות "ילדות טובות". מיפוי מאחורי הקלעים של התוכניות גילה כי גברים דומיננטיים יותר במקצועות הבימוי והיצירה, ואילו נשים תופסות מקום מרכזי יותר בתחום ההפקה
והתסריטאות. הדיון בממצאים אלו עוסק בקשר שבין דימויים לבין יוצריהם ובהשלכות
הפוטנציאליות על מגדר, ילדּות והתבגרות בישראל.

רבי דוד בן רבי יהושע הנגיד, האחרון לשושלת הנגידים שהתחילה ברמב"ם, היה סופר פורה. עד כה פורסם רק חיבור אחד שלו, "מורה הפרישות ומדריך הפשיטות", על ידי יוסף פנטון, שהניח גם את אבני היסוד בזיהוי חיבוריו האחרים. כאן מתפרסמת התחלת פירושו של רבי דוד הנגיד לתפילה, מתוך מהדורה שתראה אור בקרוב. הפירוש משלב באופן מקורי רציונליזם מבית מדרשו של הסב הדגול, הרמב"ם, עם חסידות מבית מדרשו של בנו רבי אברהם, והוא כולל גם מובאות מספר הזוהר.

This paper traces the history of the Jewish 247-year calendar cycle based on evidence provided by a comprehensive corpus of medieval and early modern manuscripts from different geo-cultural areas. It gauges popular and scientific attitudes towards the reiterative calendar asking why, although this cycle was known to be “faulty” already in the 12th century, reiterative calendars continued to be copied and discussed until the 19th century.

קהילת "אלשאמיין", היא קהילת בני ארץ ישראל בפוסטאט, ראתה ברס"ג את אביה הרוחני, אך לא ידוע היה למה. במאמר זה נחשפת דרכו של רבי מצליח גאון, אחד ממנהיגי הקהילה שגלה אליה מדמשק והקים בה את ישיבת "גאון יעקב" ונהג את נשיאותו ברמה. מתברר שהוא ראה עצמו כממשיכו של רס"ג, עד שאת דרשותיו ביסס על ציטוטים מעובדים של דברי רס"ג, בתוספת פתיחות וסיומים.
המאמר מלווה בבירור מקיף אודות קשרים אלו ואודות זהותו של אחד מאנשי הקשר החשובים בפרשה: רבי זכאי, הסופר ואולי גם הדיין. בשלב זה מוהדרת גם דרשתו של רבי מצליח לעשרת הדברות, שכפי הנראה נאמרה בחג השבועות. אף היא מבוססת על דרשתו של רס"ג לחג השבועות.

Most of the voluminous book of Zohar was written in Spain at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its texts are written either as homilies or as stories (and very often as a combination of both genres). There are about 350 stories in the Zohar, but about 20 of them combine together into describing the life story and spiritual development of R. Shimeon bar Yochay and his circle (fraternity). These stories are literarily very sophisticated and are characterized by acute messianism.
Here one scene in this biography is described, in which a new novice, R. Hiyya the Great, joins the fraternity. Thus the fraternity consists now of 10 members and is therefore "whole". At the same time R. Hiyya is being rewarded with an awesome mystical experience and is to be considered a prophet, just like all other members.
This article presents a critical edition of this story, based on 28 sources – manuscripts, different printed editions and quotations. It also presents an additional, unknown version of the story, probably an earlier one, which is extant in one manuscript only.
The article begins with detailed introductions which lay special emphasis on literary and theological analysis.

The study deals with liturgical texts from the Cairo Geniza that contain vestiges of the ancient Palestinian rite and later revisions, some of which can be attributed to the influence of authorities who were loyal to the Babylonian tradition. The case in point concerns the Shabbat evening prayer service. A fragmentary query to Abraham Maimonides (AM) describes recitation of the אשר כילה formula and a liturgical poem (מעריב), מזמור שיר אזמרה. The text was written by Yedutun, cantor of the Palestinian Congregation of Fustat in the early 13th century. Its analysis demonstrates that it was sent to AM shortly after he assumed leadership and was intended to convince him of the validity of the synagogue's custom.
The אשר כילה variant (known from Saadiah Gaon's Siddur) was popular in both Palestinian and Babylonian congregations. Some authorities rejected its recitation; others emended the text. Maimonides objected to the formula but gave instructions not to coerce congregants to abandon it, since it did not involve a thematic change in the benediction and coercion would cause dissension. He nevertheless suggested a revision, similar to one found in a Geniza fragment. In one section of his Mishne Torah he ruled that modification of the text of a benediction that had been fixed by the sages invalidated the blessing but elsewhere that it did not disqualify it, if the prescribed opening בא"י אמ"ה and the theme were preserved. Later authorities debated whether the two rulings reflected a change of mind or different circumstances.
After Maimonides' death, AM and R. Joseph Rosh ha-Seder completely rejected the אשר כילה formula and claimed that it involved a thematic deviation in the benediction. AM cited two baraitot on modifications of the texts of benedictions, one unknown from other sources. The two indicate that the conflicting rulings in Mishne Torah reflect different circumstances rather than the master's revision. In his 1215/6 responsum to Yemen AM informed his correspondents that he had abolished the practice to recite אשר כילה in Fustat (or Egypt) shortly after having assumed leadership. He referred to an earlier responsum which probably was the missing reply to the Geniza query written by Yedutun.
Yedutun's query alludes to other variants of the traditional liturgy. A fragment of the Palestinian Congregation of Fustat's prayer book (Seder Fustat B) from the early 13th century, for Passover weekdays, here edited, and other sources confirm that the text of the מעריב ערבים benediction began without the words אשר בדברו. A baraita in BT Berakhot 12a appears to attest this practice.
Fragments of Seder Fustat B for the Shabbat evening service, here edited, preserve liturgical formulations and practices, which have not been identified elsewhere, such as 'רְצינו במנוחתנו (rather than רְצה במנוחתנו). Some of these appear to be vestiges of the old Palestinian rite. These fragments also preserve the complete text of the liturgical poem מזמור שיר אזמרה, which is edited here as well.
The recitation of the וַיכֻלו verses on Friday evening in the Palestinian liturgical practice is discussed in the concluding section.

Recent years have seen the flourishing of research on Lithuanian Kabbalists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to the point that some scholars speak of a defined and delineated stream of Kabbalah, a school unto itself dubbed "Lithuanian Kabbalah." Such scholars include within this stream all those who saw the Vilna Gaon as their teacher in Kabbalah (parallel to the position of the Baal Shem Tov in Hasidism) and they ascribe to it such fixed categories as its "Articles of Faith." In their conception, this stream was part and parcel of the broader and well-known nationalist-messianic current that had its source, supposedly, in the Vilna Gaon himself; this current reached its full fruition in the twentieth century, and so too has the smaller stream within it, now a clearly defined "school," developed in various ways until the present. As if this were not enough, scholars have joined the later ideological trend which seeks to revise the history of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in a decidedly messianic way, presenting it in a continuous line from the Vilna Gaon to the emergence of Zionism and then to the founding of the State of Israel. Again, the Vilna Gaon is not merely presented as a "herald" of Zionism but as one who encoded within his Torah the secret of redemption, the beginning of which, apparently, we are witnessing today. The article conducts a critical analysis of the concept of "Lithuanian Kabbalah," and uses as its case study the life and teachings of Rabbi Shimon Tsvi Horowitz.

"Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), ed. Jonatan Meir, Three volumes, Mosad Bialik, Jerusalem

Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), first published in Vienna in 1819, is one of the sharpest and wittiest pieces of Jewish literature written in the first half of the nineteenth century, and is perhaps the most important piece of Hebrew prose composed before the stories of Mendele Mocher Seforim. A sly and complex story deriding Hasidism and Hasidim, it is told through the correspondence between the beadles of Hasidic courts and contemporary rabbis, and it presents a dark picture of  avaricious frauds and swindlers whose main concern was control over territory and the souls of believers, a goal achieved by beguiling the authorities and attacking all opponents. Perl lends his book a ‘Hasidic’ feel both in its physical design and in its language, presenting a Maskilic version of In Praise of the Ba’al Shem Tov that lays Hasidism bare so that no reader will ever be able to look at that, or any other Hasidic book, in the same way again. In addition to the book’s satiric sting, which would have been enough to bring its readers a dual pleasure, Perl’s hints at contemporary people and places, hidden within anagrams and numerological tricks. With the unraveling of these clues, which also include the use of actual Hasidic sources, the book is a valuable, contemporary view of historical reality. A meticulous reading of the book may therefore open a window on the hidden worlds of Hasidism and the Haskalah at the start of the nineteenth century.


The first volume (Imagined Hasidism) serves as an introduction to the complex satirical writings of Josef Perl of Tarnopol (1773-1839). At the center of the book stands an analysis of the satires, Megaleh Temirin (1819) and Bochen Tzadik (1838), including a systematic treatment of the ‘characters’ in the central works and a discussion of the dozens of manuscripts to be found in the Perl Archive in Jerusalem. Perl’s writings are analyzed here in the fuller context of Hebrew and Yiddish literature in general and Maskilic and Hasidic literature in particular, as well as other polemical writings and governmental records critical of Hasidism. The study thus presents a complex and nuanced picture of the relationship between literature and history, between the anti-Hasidic reports and the more complicated historical reality, and lays the groundwork for further research into the genre of nineteenth-century Maskilic satire.

The second and third volumes (Megaleh Temirin) present for the first time an annotated edition of Megaleh Temirin. It is based on the first edition and the scattered manuscripts and it includes a comparison to its Yiddish translation. The book is accompanied by appendices on its origins and contents, including fundamental treatments of several passages: an explication of the encoded names, the Hasidic sources used by the author, and the variants found in the manuscripts and in the only edition of the book in Yiddish.

The editor of the book, Professor Jonatan Meir, teaches in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University. He has published several articles on the Haskalah of Eastern Europe, Hasidism, and a number of varied topics in twentieth-century Kabbalah.

We present an end-to-end system for aligning transcript letters to their coordinates in a manuscript image. An intuitive GUI and an automatic line detection method enable the user to perform an exact alignment of glyphs on the manuscript with an existing transcription. In order to bridge large regions in between annotation, and augment the manual effort, the system employs an opticalflow engine for directly matching at the pixel level the image of a line of a historical text with a synthetic image created from the transcript’s matching line. Meanwhile, by accumulating aligned letters, and performing letter spotting, the system is able to bootstrap a rapid semi-automatic transcription of the remaining text. Thus, the amount of manual work is greatly diminished and the transcript alignment task becomes practical regardless of the corpus size.

The Rothschild Miscellany is a large compendium of Hebrew texts consisting of biblical books, prayers, philosophy books and moralistic and didactic treatises. It is written on parchment and is profusely decorated with gold initials and text illustrations. 
The production of the Miscellany, namely the distribution of labor between text and decoration was a close collaboration between scribe, and artist, guided by a spiritual guide.
A thorough examination of the decoration of the Miscellany and the corpus of works attributed to the Venetian artist Leonardo Bellini suggests that the Miscellany was produced in his workshop and that he was responsible for planning and executing a large part of the decoration.

בספר זה מופיעה מהדורה ביקורתית של תרגומו ופרשנותו של רב סעדיה גאון לספר אסתר, שנכתבה בערבית-יהודית. מהדורה זו, מלווה בהקדמה ובתרגום ללשון הקודש, הערות ועיונים, ובהם מושם דגש על השפעתו פרשנותו של רס"ג על הבאים אחריו, בפרשנות המקרא ובהלכה.
רס"ג קרא לספר זה "כתאב אלאינאס באלגלוה" - ספר הליווי הגלות, והוא כולל בו דיון נרחב אודות דרכי התנהגותה והתמודדותה של האומה היהודית במצבי משבר, בצילן של מלכויות מצליחות ותחת עול גזירות שונות. לצד דיונים יסודיים אלו, מלווה רס"ג את המגילה בתובנות מקוריות רבות, בתחום הפרשנות, ההגות וההלכה.
