Gunflints History

In the year 1948 in the village Sapaniw near Krzemieniec a 191 flints for flintlock guns were
collected. Among them there were both correctly made and failed examples. The collection is kept by the
National Historical and Cultural Reserve in Dubno. 
There are known plenty of the fields in the vicinity of Sapaniw and near Krzemieniec where good
quality flint was found. In the past there were many workshops in the area  producing flints for the army.

Slav population started to systematically settle on the territory of Severskiy Donets middle valley from XVI—XVII centuries. The main part of the population lived in military encampments. The development of the region under permanent threat of the Tatar invasion presupposed that population was highly militarized and needed firearms and special flint stocks. Numerous gunflint microlithos were found in the cultural strata of the XVI—XVIII centuries monuments (fortresses Kharkov, Chuguev, Tsareborisov, Tor, Verkhniy Saltov settlement, settlements Mokhnach–P, Vydylykha, Kazachya Pristan, Volkovoe). These microlithos were partially delivered from Moscow and partially were obviously produced in the local workshops. The problems of production, delivery and typology of gunflints from the XVI—XVIII centuries Donets archeological complexes are discussed in this article.

Настоящая работа продолжает исследование кремневого хозяйства Нового времени Восточной Европы. Для решения этой задачи анализируются материалы Черкасской крепости (Черкасского казачьего городка) XVII-XVIII в. на Нижнем Дону. Были учтены ружейные микролиты-вкладыши (51 экз.), кресальные кремни (39 экз.), а также изделия, непосредственно связанные с кремневым хозяйством (кресала-2 экз.) и огнестрельным оружием (пули-222 экз., ружейный замок с сохранившимся ружейным кремнем, фрагмент ствола). Ружейные и кресальные кремни происходят из различных археологических комплексов. Универсальным датирующим материалом всех объектов культурного слоя являются монеты, и прежде всего, широко распространенные мелкие медные номиналы. Депонирование ружейных и кресальных кремней в культурный слой укрепленного поселения совпадает с моделями депонирования бытового мусора. Авторы предлагают ввести индекс интенсивности износа (Iint) кремневых ружейных микролитов-вкладышей для определения степени редукции изделий. Анализируется технология их изготовления, изменение типологического состава ружейных кремней во времени. Обосновывается вывод о том, что ружейные кремни попадали в крепость преимущественно в составе государственных поставок и производились в специализированных мастерских в районе распространения кремня каменноугольного генезиса в центральных районах Европейской России. После изнашивания ружейные кремни использовались в качестве кремней для высекания огня при помощи железного огнива. The Flintlock Phenomenon. The Gunflints from Wawel Hill as a Reflection of Gunflint Production in the Austrian Monarchy

The flintlock developed over centuries-long evolution of the firearms, starting from the onset of the 13th century. Originally the matchlock came into use, followed by the more advanced serpentine lock, until the first wheel-lock that generated sparks was invented. The wheel-lock mechanism drew on the possibility to generate sparks by iron sulphide (pyrite) coming into contact with a rotating steel wheel. The snaplocks and the flintlocks that superseded these mechanisms in the 16th century already incorporated flint striking a steel plate (flint and steel mechanism) and were in broad use in the armies until the first half of the 19th century and the invention of the caplock. The properly processed flint used in such locks – the gunflint – is a perfect source and carrier of information. It points to the region where it was produced, to the army that had it in its equipment, and to the type of weapon for which it was intended. It is also possible to determine whether the gunflint actually helped fire a shot.

The paper outlines the methods and techniques of gunflint production, reflecting on the degree of organization of the flint knapping shop with all its facilities. A reference has been made to the centres of gunflint production – the workshops and the flint mining sites, which can be linked with particular towns and even pinpointed in geographical terms.

Consideration for the structural features of the flintlock, the morphometric characteristics of gunflints, and the diversity of flint outcrops and workshops in terms of the raw material and the administrative setting has prompted a presentation and an analysis of a group of historic objects. The collection under analysis comprises seven gunflints and one fire flint for fire steel, all acquired during archaeological research on Wawel Hill. They are most probably related to the stay of military men from the Austrian army in that location. Another historic object discussed in the paper is a cavalry pistol model XIII – a symbol of the Napoleonic Wars and one of the most effective pistols in that system. The objects in question have been on display at the permanent exhibition In the Shadow of Krak’s Mound at the Podgórze Museum. Their presentation refers to the production of gunflints in that location in the 18th and 19th centuries and the extraction of flint for that purpose from the abundant local deposits.

Аннотация. В современной исторической науке не ослабевает интерес к изучению систем вооружения, в том числе огнестрельного оружия Нового времени с фитильными и кремневыми запальными батареями. Этот интерес сопровождается новыми находками деталей кремневых ружей и многочисленных ружейных кремней в культурных слоях крепостей и фортов XVI-XVIII вв., поступающих в результате археологических раскопок. Автор статьи ставит перед собой цель рассмотреть краткую историографию вопроса в контексте эволюции взглядов историков вооружения. При группировке взглядов историков на развитие вооружения был выбран хронологический принцип, наиболее полно отражающий эволюцию систем оценок. Историю изучения данной проблемы можно поделить на дореволюционный, советский, постсоветский и современный этапы. The river Severskiy Donets is a large right-bank tributary of the river Don, a major waterway of the East-European plain. The middle section of the river divides two natural and climatic zones ‒ steppe and forest-steppe. Active colonization of this sector of Eastern Europe began in the 16th century and ended up in the first half of the 18th century, including these territories into the Russian empire as its integral parts. Colonization saw a spontaneous settling of the right-bank Ukraine by natives as well as systematic migration of “servicemen” from major cities. The military-administrative organization of the territories was based on a network of small fortresses and stockaded towns. The first of them was the fortress of Czareborisov (founded in 1599), subsequently followed by the fortresses of Chuguev, Torsk, Maiaki, Kazachia Pristan etc. The fortifications were represented by shallow ditches, underground shelters, palisades (made of logs), and watchtowers. The armament of the garrisons comprised cannons, different types of guns, including guns with flintlocks (so-called batterylocks). During archaeological excavations of these monuments, small series of gunflints were found. The authors examine the gunflints as a special type of geometrical microlithic artefacts with the exclusive function of producing sparks. The gunflints from forts in the middle section of the Severskiy Donets correspond to the ‘European-type’ (i.e. blade-based gunflints). The gunflints published here are made of different flint raw materials. The majority is produced of quality flint from local Upper Cretaceous deposits. A smaller amount of gunflints is made of flint characteristic of the Upper Volga flint sources (central part of the Greater Moscow area). Apparently, these gunflints were supplied to outlying forts alongside with ammunition.

Статья посвящена проблеме идентификации ружейных кремней в комплексах Нового времени. Ружейные кремни являются специфическим видом исторических и археологических источников. Распространение этих изделий целиком связано с распространением огнестрельного оружия с кремневыми запальными батареями. Типология ружейных кремней принципиально схожа с типологией микролитов-вкладышей каменного века. В обоих случаях заготовками выступали фрагменты пластин и пластинчатых сколов. В публикации описываются небольшие комплексы ружейных кремней из Крыма. Кремни происходят из русских военных лагерей XVIII века в Бахчисарае и Белогорске, а также из Севастополя, где относятся к Крымской войне. Публикуемые кремневые ружейные вкладыши целиком соответствуют стандартам ружейных кремней Западной Европы. Значительная часть кремней имеет свинцовую оболочку, которая предназначалась для фиксации кремневого вкладыша в бойке запальной батареи. Параметры кремней свидетельствуют о применении в то время ружей различного калибра. Вопрос о месте изготовления кремней остается открытым.

A sample from a stockpile of gunflints discarded by the Nepalese military in the early to middle 1800s shows that although Nepal obtained most of its munitions from Britain, the situation was complex. The Nepalese rapidly learned to manufacture their own guns, imitating or varying British patterns. However, gunflints were a necessary
component of flintlock firearms that were obtained by most nations from a few European centers. Although most of the flints in the Nepalese armory are clearly of British origin, and some are French, a relatively small number of anomalous form and different material are probably of native manufacture, previously undocumented.
Variation in quality also suggests multiple sources, some of which may have been black market or irregular. Different damage patterns represent wear and re-sharpening, fitting to guns, and use in flint-and-steel fire-starting. The flints reveal some patterns in the interaction of the British Empire with its colonial enterprises.

На протяжении XVII–XVIII вв. крепость Азов играла исключительно важную роль в геополитике Российского государства и Османской империи. Культурные слои Азова XVII–XVIII вв. значительно пострадали в результате неоднократного разрушения крепости и последующей ее реконструкции. По причине плотной городской застройки археологические раскопки на территории бывшей крепости и в ее округе ведутся редко и на ограниченных участках. Среди находок выделяется относительно небольшая серия ружейных кремней, расходных материалов к ружейному бою, серия кресальных кремней. Ружейные и основная часть кресальных кремней изготовлены из каменноугольного кремня верхневолжского генезиса. В статье, которая продолжает серию публикаций авторов по вопросам организации кремневого хозяйства на территории Нижнего Дона в XVII–XVIII вв., анализируется подборка ружейных кремней по авторской
методике.

Новое время в европейских странах происходит анимация кремнеобработки. В основном это было связано с широким распространением огнестрельного оружия с кремневыми запальными батареями. Продвижение Российской державы в Азово-Черноморский бассейн в XVII-XVIII вв. сопровождалось созданием и расширением системы укреплений. Обязательным элементом материальных остатков этих укреплений были ружейные и кресальные кремни. В статье выделяются три модели кремневого хозяйства в зависимости от характера каменного сырья и типов изделий.
