Frank Lloyd Wright

While artist Grant Wood and architect Frank Lloyd Wright were contemporaries from the American Midwest, they were in many ways unlike. In particular, Wood’s most famous painting, American Gothic, makes use of a strict verticality that stands in marked contrast to the well-known horizontal stance of Wright’s Prairie Style architecture. Yet, when examined more closely, it is apparent that both men made use of a “grammar” of construction that is heavily based on attribute rhyme.

From antiquity until the present day, architecture has taken many forms and has continually evolved into grand masterpieces. Each building or design becomes a reflection of  the architect, so for Frank Lloyd Wright, those buildings were born from ideas and interpretations of an “organic” architecture, that were harmonious with nature, celestial, and modern in design. They were based upon his theory of how “form and function are one.” However, does his architecture still influence new themes in architecture today, or was it just a period in history, full of natural grandeur, which is now being glossed over by many? While many historians question  and ponder this, his work has, by all means, captivated and inspired those that visit his works that are still standing today, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Throughout his constant study, vigilance, and determination, his focus and incorporation of nature into the modern and abstract allowed him to create some of the world’s most infamous works which illustrate his organic architecture. This style has allowed for viewers and visitors alike to explore and journey through his creations.

The emergence of Modern architecture and landscape design corresponds with the end of the Meiji era (1868-1912) in Japan. This period saw Japan reopen its borders to the Western world and create a dynamic moment which fostered artistic and intellectual exchange between Japan, Europe and America. The (re-)discovery of Japanese architecture and gardening by both Western and Japanese Orientalists and the dissemination of the hitherto undiscovered built forms and conceptual thinking allowed several generations of architects and landscape architects to take part in the creation of new architectural and landscape expressions. The works of Josiah Conder, Bruno Taut, Frank Lloyd Wright, Antonin Raymond, and Isamu Noguchi are all paradigms of these Modern encounters between Japan and the West.

L’apparition d’une modernité architecturale et paysagère correspond à une période particulièrement propice aux échanges artistiques et intellectuels entre le Japon, l’Europe et les Etats-Unis, à partir de la fin de l’ère Meiji (1868-1912). La (re-)découverte de l’architecture et de l’art des jardins japonais par les orientalistes occidentaux et japonais, puis la réception et la diffusion de ses nouveaux modèles et savoirs, vont permettre à plusieurs générations d’architectes et de paysagistes de participer à la création de nouvelles expressions architecturales et paysagères. Les ouvrages de Josiah Conder ou de Bruno Taut, les oeuvres de Frank Lloyd Wright, d’Antonin Raymond, d’Isamu Noguchi, nés de ces rencontres entre le Japon et l’Occident, sont les témoins de cette modernité.

Since the advent of modern architecture, notions of free plan and transparency have proliferated well into current trends. The movement's notion of a spatially homogeneous, open and limitless 'free plan' contrasts with the spatially heterogeneous 'series of rooms' defined by load bearing walls, which in turn triggered new notions of transparency created by vast expanses of glazed walls. Similarly, transparency was also dichotomized as something that was physical or optical, as well as something conceptual, akin to spatial organization. As opposed to merely accepting the duality and possible incompatibility of these dichotomies, this paper seeks to ask how can space be both literally and phenomenally transparent, as well as exhibit both homogeneous and heterogeneous qualities? This paper explores this potential destabilization or blurring of spatial phenomena by dissecting the transparent layers and volumes of a series of selected case studies to investigate how different architects have devised strategies of spatial ambiguity and interpenetration. Projects by Peter Eisenman, Sou Fujimoto, and SANAA will be discussed and analyzed to show how the superimposition of geometries and spaces achieve different conditions of layering, transparency, and interstitiality. Their particular buildings will be explored to reveal various innovative kinds of spatial interpenetration produced through the articulate relations of the elements of architecture, which challenge conventional perceptions of interior and exterior whereby visual homogeneity blurs with spatial heterogeneity. The results show how spatial conceptions such as interpenetration and transparency have the ability to subvert not only inside-outside dialectics, but could also produce multiple degrees of interiority within complex and indeterminate spatial dimensions in constant flux as well as present alternative forms of social interaction.

En 1912 el arquitecto Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) publicó en Chicago un breve ensayo con el título The Japanese Print: An Interpretation (La estampa japonesa: Una interpretación). Para entonces ya era un prestigioso arquitecto y sus viajes, primero por Japón y después por Europa, fueron dejando un importante poso en su obra. En concreto, la cultura nipona le mostró una vía para desarrollar la relación entre la arquitectura, la geometría y la naturaleza. En pleno proceso de descubrimiento de los valores estéticos de este arte y dentro del influyente movimiento del Japonismo, esta obra muestra el interés de Wright por el grabado popular japonés, en especial por los grandes paisajistas Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) y Andō Hiroshige (1797-1858). Pero Wright no fue únicamente un aficionado a estas creaciones, sino también un verdadero estudioso y un sagaz vendedor profesional, importando más de veinte mil obras para los principales museos y coleccionistas de Estados Unidos. Este contacto tan directo con la estampa japonesa influyó decisivamente en el nacimiento de la arquitectura orgánica, como se desprende de ciertas ideas expresadas en este breve ensayo. Algunas de sus creaciones más famosas, como La casa de la cascada (1936), ejemplifican bien las lecciones aprendidas de Japón. Frank Lloyd Wright vivió rodeado de estampas japonesas desde su juventud hasta su muerte, en 1959, ya consagrado como uno de los grandes genios de la arquitectura moderna.

Guggenheim, appassionato d'arte e grande collezionista, aveva avviato già alcuni anni prima. E' Hilla Rebay, la curatrice della collezione, a sollecitare la vena creativa dell'architetto attraverso una lettera. Nel Giugno dello stesso anno gli scrive infatti la sua richiesta di un'opera che fosse "un tempio dello spirito, un monumento", portando così la progettazione verso ciò che sarebbe stata la realizzazione di un'opera d'arte per esporre arte. Wright inizia subito a immaginare il museo, individuandone le caratteristiche principali: basso, dinamico, anticonformista. Questi, supponendo che si sarebbe trattato di un terreno nella densa Manhattan, inizia a predisporre la committenza verso un volume orizzontale, piuttosto che un dispersivo sviluppo verticale. All'arrivo dei disegni preliminari, la committenza è subito affascinata dalle proposte innovative dell'architetto, in sintonia con le attese e gli scopi dell'opera. Sono necessari tredici anni di trattative prima che il progetto si avvia verso la sua realizzazione. Dopo varie interruzioni, solo il 16 Luglio 1956 hanno avvio i lavori di scavo che gettano le basi di ciò che sarà da subito una delle architetture icona del ventesimo secolo. Nell'Ottobre del 1959, tre anni dopo l'apertura del cantiere, il museo è terminato e inaugurato in assenza del suo ideatore ma anche del suo progettista, scomparso sei mesi prima. Il polo culturale si distingue nella griglia densa di Manhattan, con le sue forme morbide e basse, creando un'eccezione nella successione continua di alti grattacieli scatolari che attorniano Central Park. L'altezza ridotta del complesso e la disomogenea distribuzione delle parti all'interno del lotto, sono infatti in contrasto con l'alta densità e lo sfruttamento intensivo del terreno, tipico dei centri delle grandi città americane. Le forme tondeggianti dei volumi emergenti, si oppongono alla regolarità della maglia newyorkese. Wright preferisce interpretare l'esperienza dell'arte non come un severo indottrinamento ma come una passeggiata. El legado arquitectónico de Wright puede resumirse en dos conceptos que constituyen el centro de su reflexión: la continuidad exterior del espacio interior dentro de la armonía entre naturaleza y arquitectura y la creación de un espacio expresivo en el interior de un volumen abstracto.

La miscellanea di scritti illustra tematicamente le conferenze tenute a Venezia negli anni '50 e '60 del Novecento e le proposte progettuali ideate per la città insulare da alcuni maestri del modernismo architettonico, ovvero Richard Neutra, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright e Carlo Scarpa; i singoli saggi sono raccordati ed integrati da schede del redattore con note ed informazioni storiche, bibliografiche e d’archivio; il filo conduttore del volume è la documentazione conservata nel Fondo Trincanato donato all’Archivio Progetti dell’Università di Architettura di Venezia nel 2004 e subito notificato come bene di interesse storico dalla Soprintendenza Archivistica per il Veneto.

Il paper è comprensivo di una breve analisi dei principi compositivi e, parallelamente, costruttivi riguardo uno dei progetti probabilmente più noti dell'architetto americano Frank Lloyd Wright. Il Solomon R. Guggenheim di New York si inserisce all'interno di un tessuto urbano profondamente eterogeneo la cui stratificazione ha permesso il puntuale e riconoscibile inserimento del museo stesso tra gli anni 1943 e 1959.

In 1825, the Van Diemen’s Land Company (VDL Co.) was chartered in London and granted the right to select 250,000 acres for pastoral enterprise in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), ultimately located across the island’s isolated north-west frontier at Circular Head (Stanley), Emu Bay (Burnie) and Woolnorth. The company established its headquarters in a fashionable Regency villa, Highfield, at Circular Head, designed by VDL Co. Surveyor, Henry Hellyer, (c.1835) and built with prefabricated elements imported from England.  The company’s subsequent enterprises served remote colonial expansion through the establishment of regional infrastructure and commissioning of architecture extending across the remainder of the nineteenth century.  In 1966, the VDL Co. appointed its first Australian Governor, the Victorian Western District pastoralist and the company’s largest single shareholder, Alan Ritchie (1895-1974). Under Ritchie, the company’s operations were consolidated at Woolnorth, with the construction of a large Frank Lloyd Wright cum Sydney School homestead designed by Melbourne architect, Geoffrey Woodfall (1930-2016). Occupying one of Australia’s oldest, continuously-held company land holdings—with a known history of violent dispossession of northwest Tasmania’s Aboriginal people—, the Woolnorth Homestead carries company, family and architectural lineages of colonial origin. For Woodfall, the commission also precipitated a plethora of unexamined commercial, community and residential buildings across north-west Tasmania from the 1970s into the early 2000s, effectively reconstituting the dynamics of the VDL Co.’s earlier regional influence.  This article is based on research across three archives, those of: the VDL Co. (Tasmanian Heritage and Archives Office); former VDL Co. Governor, Alan Ritchie (University of Melbourne Archive), and crucially the architect, Geoffrey Woodfall (RMIT Design Archive).  It seeks to understand the intersecting histories and identities at stake in the architecture of Woolnorth.

Frank Lloyd Wright is among the great masters of 20th-century architecture. A frenzied personal life helped create the myth of a rebellious, non-conformist artist, and his extensive career – he died at almost 92 and dedicated 72 years to the profession – produced one of the most prolific oeuvres of all times. And his extraordinary creativity made him conceive some of the finest buildings in history. The project and building commentaries are by Jorge Sainz.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Broadacre City seems anomalous in twentieth century urban history. First presented in 1930 as a critique of existing American cities, the project developed into a program for territorial decentralization over the ensuing decade. Although Wright's often elliptical rhetoric can seem disengaged from urban discourse, this article argues that Broadacre City was based on prevailing suburban trends that it attempted to intensify. In doing so, the article makes two significant claims about Wright's work. The first is that Broadacre City was not a utopian master plan but rather a hermeneutical framework for managing socio-spatial change. The second is that the project was as critically attentive to changes in and around American cities as it was uncritically informed by existing forms of privilege and prejudice. If Broadacre City appears to be better grounded in urban history as a result, then its historiographic status needs to be revisited.

Méconnu, le bâtiment des deuxième et troisième cycles de la Faculté des Sciences et Technologies de Nancy (accompagné de sa bibliothèque) est l'un des témoignages les plus impressionnants de l'influence de Frank Lloyd Wright et du Brutalisme en France. Officiellement attribué à Georges Tourry et Claude Goclowski, l'édifice serait avant tout l’œuvre de l'architecte pyrénéen Edmond Lay. Ce livret de 48 pages, abondamment illustré, est destiné à la (re)valorisation patrimoniale de cet édifice.

The US-American Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most important architects of the 20th century. But not only was he a famous designer, he also was a social mastermind. In his book When Democracy Builds he developed a vision for the modern society, including an all-embracing model for cities of the future, called Broadacre City.
The paper in hand gives an introduction to his enlightening concept for modern living, based on a fundamental critic on the capitalist society.

This article uses two seminal 20th-century houses—Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and Alvar Aalto’s Villa Mairea—to examine the natural symbol of inside and outside, which for Karsten Harries (1988, 1993, 1997)  is one important lived relationship sustaining successful architecture and place.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) is one of the most published but also mythical figures in globalized architectural historiography. Although Wright sought to construct and consolidate his public image through the development of the mass media, without the help of his collaborators, who were willing to reproduce and disseminate his myth, he probably would not have achieved such results. Three Czech architects, Antonín Raymond, Vladimír Karfík and Jaroslav Josef Polívka, left the author's texts, which had the same function and in which they described their experience of working with Wright as a "touch of genius". Due to the transition of the Wright Archive, its organization and partial digitization, from the Wright Foundation to the Avery Library at Columbia University, it was possible to reconstruct these Czech architects' relations with Frank Lloyd Wright and their development, which showed a marked contradiction to their own testimony in published texts. texts to be published in the case of Polívka). The present study deals with these discrepancies between the autobiographical testimonies of Czech architects and the reality that can be reconstructed on the basis of correspondence and other archival materials. It turned out that the historical social practice, matrix and social habitus, to the phenomena of which Professor Kroupa deals in his life's work, is often distorted by the schematized image and traditional myths.
