ABSTRACT: With the automation of information systems and with the advent of digital libraries, norms, standards and techniques of library studies have been widely discussed, analyzed, reevaluated and reorganized. In this article the results of doctoral research, in which the Brazilian Metadata Standard for Theses and Dissertations (MTD-BR) was analyzed, is presented. This standard has been utilized in the digital Library of Theses and Dissertations Project, of the Instituto Brasileiro de Infor-mação em Ciência e Tecnologia, IBICT (Brazilian Institute for Scientific and Technological Information), with the methodology of data modeling, according to the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), which is based on the Entity-Relationship Model. It was concluded that new studies should be carried out applying this methodology to other metadata standards, even if they are analyzed with other data modeling tools, such as the object-oriented model, and considering its relationship with the guidelines, principles and instruments of library studies.

The book does an analysis of bibliographic models from Panizzi to FRBR. It looks at the origins of FRBR within IFLA, its goals, and its outcomes, to conclude that the model is unfortunately hampered by a too narrow interpretation of the entity-relation methodology. It also favors that technology over the stated goals of serving users and providing a new bibliographic record for international sharing. The book argues that the value in future models will be flexibility and growth, not the rigidity that FRBR has come to represent.

The paper discusses the reasons of users' dissatisfaction in the use of present online catalogues, that arise from the failure of catalogues in offering a systematic view of presentation of the bibliographic universe and even less in organizing knowledge effectively. The paper presents the concept of granularity and compares it with the three scenarios for the implementation of RDA - Resource Description and Access that Tom Delsey defined in 2006. The paper shows how these scenarios can be implemented in the only two cataloguing codes written after FRBR (REICAT - Regole italiane di catalogazione and RDA) and it highlights how logical improvements derived from FRBR turn into specific devices, that require to change data structure of the catalogue and, consequently, of cataloguing software.

The article analyzes the conceptual model of the Functional Requirements for Biblio-graphic Records (FRBR) as a general model of bibliographic data and description that can be interpreted , as needed, to serve the needs of various communities. This is illustrated with descriptions of five different implementations based on the concepts in FRBR: FRBRER (entity-relation), FRBROO (object oriented), FRBRCore (FRBR entities as linked data), indecs (FRBR entities within the commerce model), and FaBiO (FRBR as a basis for academic document types). The author argues that variant models show the strength of the FRBR concepts, and should be encouraged.

Određivanje zadataka knjižničnog kataloga jedno je od ishodišta teorije bibliografske organizacije. Ujedno je riječ i o praktičnom polazištu za izradbu bilo kojeg nacionalnoga i/ili međunarodnoga kataložnog pravilnika. U prvom dijelu rada daje se pregled određivanja zadataka kataloga od utemeljitelja moderne katalogizacija Antonia Panizzija do IFLA-inih nastojanja iz 60-tih godina prošlog stoljeća iskazanih u Izjavi o međunarodnim kataložnim načelima (ICP) poznatijom kao Pariška načela. Posebno se ukazuje na stavove Eve Verone, autorice vrijedećega hrvatskoga kataložnog pravilnika. Drugi dio rada posvećen je promjenama u kataložnoj teoriji i praksi započetim 1998. objavljivanjem IFLA-ine studije Uvjeti za funkcionalnost bibliografskih zapisa (FRBR) u kojoj je određivanje zadataka kataloga zamijenjeno određivanjem korisničkih postupaka. U tom će se smislu prikazati i nastavljajuće IFLA-ine studije: Uvjeti za funkcionalnost autoriziranih podataka (FRAD) i Uvjeti za funkcionalnost predmetnih autoriziranih podataka (FRSAD). Završni dio rada posvećen je promjenama u određivanju korisničkih postupaka u još neobjavljenom IFLA-inom dokumentu, FRBR-Library Reference Model (FRBR-LRM). Iznesena analiza može doprinijeti radu na novom hrvatskom kataložnom pravilniku čiji je trogodišnji projekt izradbe u tijeku.

The essay introduces the conceptual model IFLA LRM (Library Reference Model) in its fundamental features and highlights the innovative changes. In detail, it studies the main changes in the definition of entities, attributes and relationships described in the previous model of FRBR family. The paper underlines the original introduction of a hierarchy of the entities specified in the model to create data more appropriate for the semantic web, the theoretical new expressed by the attribute " manifestation statement " and the potential effect on library data and their re-use in a semantic web.

Il saggio presenta il modello concettuale IFLA LRM (Library Reference Model) nelle sue caratteristiche principali e mettendone in evidenza gli aspetti di novità. In particolare, viene analizzato quali sono i principali cambiamenti nella definizione delle entità, degli attributi e delle relazioni definiti nei precedenti modelli della famiglia FRBR. Viene sottolineata l'importanza dell'introduzione inedita di una gerarchia tra le entità definite nel modello per la costruzione di dati più adatti al web semantico, la novità teorica espressa dall'attributo "asserzione di manifestazione" e il potenziale impatto sui dati prodotti dalle biblioteche e sul loro riuso nel web semantico.

Bibliographic relationships are one of the most active research areas in knowledge organization, especially in cataloguing. This study attempts to examine and map the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) bibliographic relationships with Tillett’s taxonomy of bibliographic relationships, and to assess the congruence between them. The FRBR conceptual model provides a taxonomy of bibliographic relationships in chapter 5, illustrating them in 11 tables. This study shows that there is considerable congruence between these two taxonomies.

Novine su jedan od prvotnih komunikacijskih alata društva te predstavljaju jedno od najprihvaćenijih i najuobičajenijih medija za prijenos lokalnih, regionalnih, naci-onalnih i međunarodnih informacija među čitateljima. Još od samih početaka civili-ziranog društva, novine su se objavljivale kako bi što širi krug čitatelja bio upoznat s najnovijim zbivanjima diljem svijeta. Danas se novine objavljuju na gotovo svim jezicima i svim zemljama zbog čega se može reći da živimo u novinskoj kulturi. Upravo zbog značaja koje novine imaju u svakodnevnom životu, važno ih je kao dio knjižničnog fonda učiniti što dostupnijima krajnjim korisnicima. Stoga je predmet interesa ovoga rada način katalogizacije novina u knjižnicama, s posebnim naglaskom na postupanje s različitim novinskim izdanjima. Rad će donijeti pregled definicija i odredbi IFLA-inih Međunarodnih smjernica za katalogizaciju novina i modula za katalogizaciju novina Kooperativnog programa za katalogizaciju serijskih publika-cija (CONSER) Kongresne knjižnice, s obzirom da su navedene smjernice i propisi usmjerene upravo na ovu vrstu serijskih jedinica građe. Odredbe koje upućuju na po-stupanje s novinskim izdanjima bit će uspoređene s praksom u odabranim hrvatskim i svjetskim nacionalnim knjižnicama. Na korpusu odabranih naslova dnevnih novina u OPAC-ima knjižnica metodom analize usporedit će se postojeća praksa katalogizacije.

Newspapers are one of the primary communication tools of the society and represent one of the most accepted and common medium for conveyance of local, regional, national and international information amog readers. Since the beginnings of the civil society, newspapers were published in order for the wide circle of readers to  be informed with latest events worldwide. Today, newspapers are published in almost every language and in every country which is why it is safe to say that we live in a newspaper culture.
Because of the importance the newspapers have in everyday life, it is important to make them as available as possible to end users within the library collections. Therefore the subject of this paper is cataloguing practice of newspapers in libraries, with particular emphasis on treatment of different newspaper editions. This paper will bring an overview of definitions and regulations of the International guidelines for the cataloguing of newspapers brought by IFLA's Section on serial publications as well as those in the newspapers module of the CONSER [Cooperative online serials program] cataloging manual since the two documents regard specifically this kind of  serial pubications.
Regulations that refer to the treatment of newspaper editions will be compared against the cataloguing practice in selected national libraries, national and worldwide, by method of analysis on the corpus of selected newspapers titles found in libraries' OPACs. The paper will also bring an overview of development of FRBR functional models  as well as novelties and solutions offered by the ontology of PRESSoo model adjusted to specific dynamic nature of continuing resources and aiming at greater semantic accuracy of their bibliographic data.

A Catalogação Descritiva passa por um momento de reflexão e de reorganização em busca de sua identidade e tem sido estudada de forma cada vez mais interdisciplinar por profissionais de campos heterogêneos. No domínio bibliográfico, com o desenvolvimento de modelos conceituais, como os Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) e a proposta das orientações do Resource Description and Acess (RDA) para a descrição de recursos, faz-se necessário compreender de que maneira tais iniciativas se relacionam com os repositórios institucionais digitais. Foi objetivo dessa pesquisa o estudo dos FRBR e RDA estabelecidos no domínio bibliográfico, a fim de identificar o estado da arte sobre as tendências do domínio bibliográfico e se os mesmos podem ser aplicados em repositórios institucionais digitais. O aporte teórico e metodológico da Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL) propiciou o mapeamento e a identificação de elementos-chave para responder a questão de pesquisa. Além disso, um estudo empírico foi realizado no Repositório Institucional da Universidade Federal de Sergipe, a partir da análise de um registro descritivo que pudessem ser identificados os princípios teóricos e aplicados dos FRBR e RDA. Foram analisados 25 (vinte e cinco) documentos na RSL, o que pode ser considerado um índice relativamente baixo sobre a produção científica condizente à proposta de pesquisa e a necessidade de estudos mais aprofundados acerca do tema. Foram identificadas tecnologias computacionais, casos de uso e aplicações específicas em ambientes bibliográficos, acadêmicos e Web. Por meio da RSL foi possível identificar e analisar aplicações de metadados baseado em FRBR e RDA em repositórios institucionais digitais, com a extração de requisitos teóricos e metodológicos mapeados pela literatura científica internacional. Sublinha-se que o estado da arte construído nessa pesquisa se apresenta como um ponto de partida para o desenvolvimento de ferramentas e de aplicações que aproximem o domínio bibliográfico dos repositórios institucionais digitais. Assim, as contribuições do domínio bibliográfico caracterizadas nesse contexto pelos FRBR e RDA e sua aplicação em repositórios institucionais digitais podem ser evidenciadas no repasse dos conceitos, dos processos, dos métodos, dos instrumentos, das tecnologias, dos modelos e dos padrões para a descrição de recursos provenientes da Catalogação Descritiva, favorecendo a modelagem de ambientes e sistemas abertos e interoperáveis, propiciando interfaces mais intuitivas e acessíveis, na garantia de recuperação das informações mais otimizadas para os usuários.

Abstract. This paper outlines the adaptation of IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) for development of a metadata scheme to represent palm leaf manuscripts (PLMs) and facilitate their retrieval in digital collections. The FRBR model uses a structured, four-level hierarchy to represent an intellectual work with multiple titles, editions or formats. Because FRBR focuses on representation of the conceptual work rather than the physical entity, it must be modified for representation of PLMs. In this modified model, the level of work applies to the physical PLM rather than its conceptual content; expression applies to the languages in which the PLM occurs; manifestation applies to the formats in which each expression is available; and item applies to individual copies of a single format. The modified model has been used to devise a metadata scheme where each level has its own set of elements.

Die Einführung des internationalen Regelwerks Resource Description and Access (RDA) bietet neue Perspektiven für die Erschließung von Filmen. Auf der Suche nach James Bond 007 werden beispielhaft Probleme in der gegenwärtigen Praxis der Katalogisierung und Zugänglichmachung von Filmen skizziert. Tragen die RDA-Anwendungsrichtlinien für den deutschsprachigen Raum D-A-CH in der derzeitigen Form den Erfordernissen des Mediums Film ausreichend Rechnung? Der Beitrag plädiert für eine Überprüfung und Ergänzung der Anwendungsrichtlinien, um audiovisuelle und multimediale Inhalte angemessen zu verzeichnen und darüber hinaus die institutionenübergreifende Vernetzung von Bestanden und Sammlungen in Bibliotheken, Archiven und Museen zu ermöglichen.
