An estimated 1.5% of the world’s population, approximately 120 million individuals, exist somewhere on the broad spectrum of autism. For far too long this spectrum, despite its diversity and nuance, was viewed as a monolithic, pathologized condition, to be cured or treated, rather than better understood or even celebrated as an identity and an alternative, but equally valid perceptual model of the world around us. This position has since shifted to a more strength based identity first position, and as the peak cohort of individuals first diagnosed when awareness was growing in the early 2000s are now reaching adulthood, self-advocacy has become an important and increasingly heard voice in the community. But architecture must listen.
I believe no one has the right to exist more comfortably, safely or effectively in space than anyone else, and it is our responsibility as architects to create the built landscape that affords this comfort, safety and efficacy to everyone- the entire spectrum of the human condition. The small collection of works included here strive to present design pathways to achieving that goal, and hopefully shift that perspective to stretch our understanding of the human condition- to be more inclusive, honest and reflective of the reality of our diverse and rich humanity.

In the course of history an interesting evolution has taken place in European gender equality policies. This story started in 1957 when the European Economic Community was founded and the principle of equal pay for equal work for men and women was included in the Treaty of Rome to avoid unfair competition and distortions in the free European market. Soon the Treaty article would evolve into a broader demand for equal rights related to work and result in a series of binding directives. In the eighties and nineties gender equality would increasingly enter other policy domains by means of non-binding soft law and gender mainstreaming. More recently, the EU has turned towards an approach of multiple discrimination which involves other grounds of discrimination, such as race and sexuality. The aim of this article is to review the history of gender equality policy in the EU while distinguishing some general trends, and discuss the implications of the most recent turn towards an anti-discrimination framework. I conclude that despite a continuous broadening of policies and strategies, economic motives continue to be the leitmotiv throughout this history. Also the broadening of EU equality policies with regard to the inclusion of multiple inequalities risks being trapped in the same economic logic. Nevertheless, despite the economic framing of EU equality policies, the pluralist and open nature of the EU’s decision-making process still provides gender activists with multiple access points to attempt to re-frame the way in which gender issues are addressed, as the struggle for a gender-just Europe continues.

This chapter critically explores the news and journalistic discourses surrounding the concept of the role model in the UK. It draws upon news content and semi-structured interviews with journalists from a wider study commissioned by the Department for Communities and Local Government exploring the media image of Black young men and boys in 2009-10. Analysis demonstrates negatively stigmatising discourses at play in role model news and polarised attitudes towards role models among journalists’ reflections. Post-Marxist discourse theory is employed to argue that rather than challenging the complex social inequalities facing young Black men as recent government policy suggests, role modelling as a ‘technology of the self’ is likely to articulate neoliberal logic and reinforce existing social inequalities

This article reviews popular and scholarly literature on transgender students' experiences who are enrolled in single-sex colleges. Because such colleges rely on bounded conceptions of sex/gender to determine who can and cannot be eligible for admission, the enrollment and matriculation of transgender students pose a challenge to the central organizing logic of the single-sex environment. As such, I first drawsupon theorizations of gendered and queer organizations to highlight the utility of sociology in analyzing the transing of organizations through transgender inclusion. Using this framework, I then address trans student experiences at the time of admission and during matriculation at single-sex colleges. These perspectives frame transgender inclusion as a new organizational form but one that is rooted in the social construction of transnormativity rather than institutional transformation.

The global LGBTTTIQA+ movement's historical struggle against the criminalization, pathologizing and discrimination of their identities has had a significant impact on different nation states, to the degree of civil rights such as same-sex marriage and adoption being obtained. However, these are processes that cannot be standardized across our complex global multiculturalism.

Liberal theories of justice typically claim that political institutions should be justifiable to those who live under them – whatever their values. The more such values diverge, the greater the challenge of justifiability. Diversity of this kind becomes especially pronounced when the institutions in question are supranational. Focusing on the case of the European Union, this article aims to address a basic question: what kinds of values should inform the justification of political institutions facing a plurality of value systems? One route to an answer is provided by John Rawls, who famously distinguishes between comprehensive and political values, and defends the exclusion of the former from the foundations of a political theory of justice. This article questions the tenability of the Rawlsian solution, and draws attention to an alternative twofold conceptual distinction: that between minimal and non-minimal and between substantive and procedural values. Minimal values are meant to be as independent as possible of controversial conceptions of the good and views of the world, regardless of whether these are comprehensive or purely political. It will be argued that their endorsement may thus further specify the nature of what should be shared in order to justify political institutions in conditions of pluralism. In order to refine further the account of such a basis of justification, two variants of minimalism will be presented according to whether they invest substantive or procedural values. Substantive values qualify the property of an outcome; procedural values qualify the property of a procedure. The latter part of the article consists of a ‘face-off’ between minimal proceduralism and minimal substantivism, considering reasons in favour of the adoption of each. The result, we suggest, is a helpful reorientation of the political dimension of the value debates to which the multiplicity of values amid contemporary European horizons give rise.

STRUCTURED ABSTRACT
CONTEXT Internships, one type of Work Integrated Learning (WIL), are an important part of the development of employability competencies. Research across professions other than engineering has indicated that unpaid internships may be subject to class based privilege and induce financial stress. Educational practices in engineering enabling unpaid internships may further disadvantage students from equity groups: low socio economic status, disability, culturally or linguistically diverse, rural or remote students, and women in non-traditional areas.

PURPOSE Funded by the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education, the extent of unpaid work placements, the role of positive social capital, accessibility and barriers to successful WIL for equity group students are being examined. We ask how the practices of the engineering industry and higher education community may embrace diversity by facilitating access to successful WIL opportunities. Successful WIL is identified by enhanced career, education or employability prospects, and positive student wellbeing.

APPROACH The mixed-methods study includes: interviews; a survey including free-response questions and a resilience instrument; and analysis of students' reflective reports. Seven participants interviewed to date have related their experiences of engineering-related internships; how they secured positons, the quality of their experiences, whether they were paid, and the impact of these experiences on their approach to their engineering education, career progression and well-being. These seven participants shared perceptions of over 17 internships of which six were unpaid. Preliminary insights from these initial interviews and free-responses from the first round of surveys only are reported in this paper. The outcomes from an integrated data analysis process incorporating: further interviews; survey data including the resilience instrument data; and reflective reports, will be published by the funding body at the conclusion of the study.

This study is based in an analytic investigation about the homosexual
orientation inside the Brazilian´s society. The study with a multiple view
looks for showing the different topics that are inside the theme of homosexuality. This article focuses itself to the necessity to protect and makeeffective the Human Rights and the human sexual diversity, fighting the vulnerabilities that broke up the implementation of the same in Brazil. That way, we hope that this research could help the Brazilian society and the homosexuals to live the human sexual diversity in an equal way without discrimination.

Diversity Gap in Representation: An independent and comprehensive equity audit of the University of Alberta. The equity audit assessed the status of equity-seeking 'designated groups'–women, Aboriginal peoples, visible minorities and persons with disabilities–in general and the status of women and gender equity in particular. In our first report and infographic released on June 1, 2016 we presented our findings on the diversity gaps among Canada Research Chairs and Canada Excellence Research Chairs.

In this second report, and the three accompanying infographics, we present findings from the AWA's in-depth analysis of primary research and various authoritative data sources on the status of equity groups at the university. The AWA's findings suggest that thirty years since the final report of the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment, and twenty-two years since the adoption of "Opening Doors: A Plan for Employment Equity at the University of Alberta, " gender parity remains elusive and significant diversity gaps persist in the university. These diversity gaps present a significant challenge to the idea of an equitable, diverse and inclusive academy as it is unlikely that the gaps will disappear without significant and sustained intervention. Led by Dr. Malinda S. Smith (AWA President) and Dr. Kisha Supernant (AWA Vice-President), the research team examined three areas of representational diversity: first, the status of women in the 'academic pipeline'; second, the overall diversity of the professoriate; and, third, an intersectional analysis of the diversity within the categories male and female professors. While the equity audit showed some areas of progress, the overall diversity gaps identified 22 years ago persist. In 2016 neither the composition of the professoriate, university leadership, nor the Board of Governors reflect the diversity of the Canadian population or the diversity of the student body. Without a different approach it is unlikely the expressed goal of equity will be achieved at the University of Alberta in the near future.

This research is based on 243 interviews conducted in various workplaces and with a wide variety of individuals in modern-day South Africa. The research analysis unearthed a number of themes within the diversity discipline, however, for the purposes of this chapter we had to pick one theme for discussion. This chapter therefore focuses on the negative psychological effects which foreign employees experience in post-Apartheid and democratic South Africa. The dominant diversity discourse has been concerned mainly from a political and policy standpoint (Liff, 1996; Dandeker and Mason, 2001). However, an evolving workplace discourse is emerging, informed by a critical post-structuralist tradition which challenges the static demographic characteristics of individuals and the positive, empowering view of individuals with different capacities – in fact, it has focused our attention on how diversity operates in organisations (Zanoni and Janssens, 2004), economic efficiency (Litvin, 2002), the nature of professions (ibid.) and broader institutional settings (de los Reyes, 2000). These discourses, it would appear, serve mainly to control less-powerful employees, such as immigrant and foreign workers, through focusing on fixed, essential group characteristics. Unfortunately, they overlook the material structure within which such discourse occurs, rendering the system static to ensuing changes in its environment.

Narrative tells of a new law to address discrimination in the federal workplace known as the Elijah E. Cummings Federal Employee Antidiscrimination Act.  The EEO reforms,  presented and suggested by the Coalition For Change, Inc. (C4C), was introduced in the House of Representatives by the late Rep. Cummings and became law on January 1, 2021.

The surge in divisive and far-right politics and escalating Islamophobia in Britain pose new challenges for Muslim advocacy organisations. British Muslim activism has taken centre stage in the public sphere as a result. Yet, for over fifty years Muslim advocacy groups have worked to preserve religious identity, lobby the state and provide concerted responses to the political establishment. This is the first book to critically chart the national and global factors influencing the political mobilisation of British Muslim activists as Muslims. Khadijah Elshayyal traces the changes in thought, direction and method within Muslim identity politics after 1960, noting key organisations and turning points
such as the Rushdie Affair, the 9/11 attacks, the 7/7 bombings and the current conflict in Syria. Considering recurrent debates around the often contentious subject of freedom of expression, Muslim Identity Politics provides a history of interaction between Muslim advocacy groups and the state, and the impact of state policy on Muslim communities. It shows that Britain’s Muslims continue to experience an ‘equality gap’ and recommends where progress can be made. Based on primary sources and in-depth interviews, this book is a vital resource for government officials, policy-makers and researchers interested in multiculturalism, Islamophobia and security issues in Britain.

This editorial illuminates the evidence of how human and social rights and diversity gains at work are under attack
in the aftermath of the global economic crisis and in times of austerity. We provide a brief overview of the six articles
in this issue, which draw upon a wide range of theories and engage with different, but in many ways connected, issues
pertinent to human and social right, diversity and equality in the light of the economic crisis and austerity. The
editorial concludes discussing a number of dilemmas and problematic issues that remain despite the increased
scholarly attention to the threat to human and social rights and diversity gains at work in current times. Lastly, we
offer recommendations to how diversity advocates can develop new approaches and strategies in order to resist
the current threat to the diversity agenda internationally

Analysis of evidence relating to the Public Sector Equality Duty, and the success factors demonstrated by organisations which have used the Duty and achieved an impact. This publication is of interest to anyone working in the broad field of equality and diversity, particularly in the public or third sectors.

The article explores why over the past thirty years political theorists largely failed to address the emergence of neoliberal capitalism and the debilitating effects of growing inequality on the lives of ordinary people and on the nature of democracy. The article argues that the predominant focus of political theory from the 1980s onwards on the role of group identity in political action and on epistemological questions of the nature of the self, while having the positive effects of helping theorists to interrogate forms of domination that cannot be reduced to class, also led many "radical" political theorists to downplay how the macro structural workings of late capitalism--and the neoliberal erosion of social rights--limits the possibilities for human freedom. The article concludes by arguing that if radical political theory is to inform political practice it must revitalize a theoretical understanding of social solidarity and of democratic equality.

What are the European Youth Goals and how do they relate to the EU Youth Strategy? Do they embody the principles of solidarity? Can they contribute to solidarity in the youth field at a national and European level and if yes, how?
This paper examines the EU Youth Strategy, especially the Youth Goals, from two different perspectives. This will be done on the one hand by understanding solidarity as a cohesive system and on the other by viewing solidarity as a common value. It will further give an insight as to whether the European Youth Goals incorporate the principles of solidarity. Lastly,
it assesses the role of the EU Youth Strategy and the Youth Goals as tools to achieve solidarity.
The analysis conducted in the paper provides the following insights. Solidarity can be understood as a cohesive system of cooperation in the European youth field. Each stakeholder has a specific role and knowledge base with which they contribute to the implementation of the EU Youth Strategy and the process of the EU Youth Dialogue. Additionally, solidarity as a common value has become even more crucial than before in the second EU Youth Strategy and in the European Youth Goals. However, the implementation of these documents depends on national realities.

The study was set to examine the differences between religion and religiosity and to explore how communities can be protected against religious violence. The study also intended to investigate the motives and the effect that religious violence has had throughout history. The study employed the qualitative research method whereby the researcher carried out a meta-analysis synthesis of different research findings to make conclusions and implications that could answer the study questions. Using the literature review they conducted, the researchers carried out data collection. As such, the researcher employed the bottom-up approach to identify the problem and the questions along with the investigation framework of what they decided to explore. The findings of the study revealed that religious backgrounds should be the cornerstone to realize the diff erence between religion and religiosity. How do some of Aotearoa New Zealand's best educators undertake culturally sensitive higher education teaching? This was the vital question that we aimed to answer through this research. In this poster, we present the results of our study examining interpretations of best practice in culturally sensitive higher education teaching. The study draws on an analysis of descriptions of best practice by Aotearoa New Zealand tertiary educators who have won Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards. These accolades are widely respected as Aotearoa New Zealand's peak rewards for recognising and encouraging excellence in tertiary education.

In order to be afforded protection on the grounds of disability, individuals have to satisfy the criteria outlined in the Equality Act 2010. This has created controversy, which has caused ongoing issues for the courts and tribunals. This essay reviews the case law and statute of the United Kingdom and makes a comparative analysis with those of other jurisdictions and the theoretical and social models of disability.

This is chapter six of my dissertation with only eleven pages available for preview here on Academia.edu.  It chronicles the beginning of Bethune's NCNW.  Readers gain a sense of her organizing principles, why she felt it was necessary to "pool" Black feminine political energy at this time, in the mid 1930s.  You will also get a sense of the friction she encountered from other Black activist women--an aspect of her political career that has not been properly examined.  In my narrative, archival/primary source research takes precedence.  Pulling particularly from newspapers of that era lend a more complete picture of the dynamics between these particular Black women activists.

Invited by Auburn University to give a public lecture soon after 911, the talk traced the history of the word “equality” from the time of slave-owner Jefferson drafting the Declaration of Independence to Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" arguing for the equality of all Americans irrespective of colour.

The Quran advocates equality; only piety distinguishes one from the other: "O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware" [Quran 49:13].

Hence, the talk argued that after 911, in a unipolar world with the United States' defence spending almost half of global military expenditures,, “equality” ought to encompass Americans and non-Americans; i.e. the equality of all humankind. In other words, the mission of The U.S. Department of State that “leads America’s foreign policy through diplomacy, advocacy, and assistance by advancing the interests of the American people, their safety and economic prosperity” ought to take into account the interests of Non-Americans, their safety and economic prosperity. If not, Foreign Affairs decisions flowing from 911 were in the danger of succumbing to hubris.

I will always treasure his endorsement.

This article examines the uses of the term "diversity" in Toronto's oldest and largest public housing project, Regent Park. The revitalization plan emphasizes a diversity of use, diversity of income, and diversity of culture in the redevelopment of the neighbourhood. I argue the diversity of diversity serves as a legitimizing tool for the revitalization projects and draws from the cachet of Canadian multiculturalism. While both "diversity" and "mix" (mixed income or diversity of incomes, for example) are generally taken for granted terms in planning discourse, promoting more equitable planning practices requires analyzing them more closely in context. My analysis sheds light on tensions between various types of diversity, thereby challenging the potential for the framework to address structural inequality via revitalization.

Diversity and contact between different groups can have positive and negative outcomes in educational settings. These negative consequences can be tackled through instigating controlled contact between groups via cooperative learning methods, such as the jigsaw classroom technique. Furthermore, in diverse situations, emotional intelligence and empathy can aid positive learning and social outcomes. This dissertation explores if links arise between emotional intelligence, empathy and participation in a jigsaw classroom for secondary-school students (n= 68). It uses a repeat-measures quantitative design involving questionnaires incorporating emotional intelligence, empathy and level of previous contact measured before and after participation in a jigsaw classroom.
This study found that emotional intelligence significantly increased whereas empathy did not see any significant change, although perspective taking empathy was negatively correlated with emotional intelligence. Those with lower levels of previous contact saw significant changes in both emotional intelligence and fantasy scale empathy, compared to those with medium and high levels of previous contact. However, there was no interaction found between contact and emotional intelligence or contact and empathy. Overall, these findings contribute to a school of thought not previously amalgamated in research and holds important research and teaching implications, though cautious extrapolations are made due to the lack of representational diversity.
