Calpurnius Flaccus

This paper focuses on the extant roman declamations featuring characters of ‘addicti’, i.e. free-born roman citizens not able to pay back a debt and consequently “assigned” to their creditors. A comparison with the extant legal texts governing the debt bondage of roman citizens suggests that the ‘addictus’, as portrayed in roman declamation, may be the outcome of a rhetorical creation; therefore, caution is needed in assuming declamatory sources as witnesses to the actual condition of ‘addicti’ in the Roman imperial age.

The identity of the author to whom the manuscript tradition ascribes this collection unanimously remains shrouded in mystery. Santorelli’s detailed analysis of Calpurnius’ metrical and accentual clausulae in this volume, however, suggests that he should be dated to the second half of the second century CE and implies that Calpurnius has been influenced by the teaching practices in use in the schools of rhetoric of the African provinces.

Os estudos paremiológicos voltados para textos da Antiguidade clássica já nos demonstraram como se dava o uso de provérbios e sentenças na poesia épica, na comédia e na tragédia latina (CASAMENTO, 1999; DINTER, 2010, 2014 e 2016; PARÉ-REY, 2012), por exemplo. São escassos, no entanto, os trabalhos que empregam essa vertente de pesquisa nas declamações de Sêneca, Pseudo-Quintiliano e Calpúrnio Flaco. Nosso objetivo no presente artigo é discutir o uso e o efeito de provérbios e sentenças em três declamações (2, 10 e 32) dos Excerpta de Flaco.
