Brackish Water

Wetlands dominated by Swamp Paperbarks (Melaleuca spp., Myrtaceae) are common in coastal regions across Australia. Many of these wetlands have been filled in for coastal development or otherwise degraded as a consequence of altered water regimes and increased salinity. Substantial resources, often involving community groups, are now being allocated to revegetating the remaining wetland sites, yet only rarely is the effectiveness of the rehabilitation strategies or on-ground procedures robustly assessed. As part of a larger project investigating the condition and rehabilitation of brackish-water wetlands of the Gippsland Lakes, we overlaid a scientifically informed experimental design on a set of community-based planting trials to test the effects of water depth, microtopography, plant age and planting method on the survival and growth of seedlings of Melaleuca ericifolia Sm. in Dowd Morass, a degraded, Ramsar-listed wetland in south-eastern Australia. Although previous laboratory and greenhouse studies have shown M. ericifolia seedlings to be salt tolerant, the strongly interactive effects of waterlogging and salinity resulted in high seedling mortality (>90%) in the field-based revegetation trials. Seedlings survived best if planted on naturally raised hummocks vegetated with Paspalum distichum L. (Gramineae), but their height was reduced compared with seedlings planted in shallowly flooded environments. Age of plants and depth of water were important factors in the survival and growth of M. ericifolia seedlings, whereas planting method seemed to have little effect on survival. Improved testing of revegetation methods and reporting of success or otherwise of revegetation trials will improve the effectiveness and accountability of projects aiming to rehabilitate degraded coastal wetlands.

Reaction path modelling, coupled with preparatory inverse modelling, was applied to test this model's ability to reproduce the wide compositional range of ground waters circulating in a restricted area in Piedmont, Italy. This approach is based on the assumption that the chemistry of groundwater evolves through a series of partial equilibria with secondary minerals until it reaches its final composition. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California] software packages were used to effect simulations. Reaction-path modelling was performed in time mode, taking into account the different rates of dissolution of each dissolving mineral.Data from literature regarding the kinetic parameters of dissolving minerals and the mineralogical composition of the host-rock were used. The results of the reaction-path modelling show that the composition of the analysed water samples was adequately reproduced, notwithstanding the hydrogeological complexity of the studied area. Modelling results provided very different water compositions as an effect of the chemical maturity, the physico-chemical parameters (fCO2, fO2, and temperature) and the variable amounts of gypsum among dissolving rock-forming minerals, which occur in Miocene levels of the sedimentary sequence. Further variability is related to the occasional contribution of brackish waters trapped in euxinic marly sediments, locally sealed by overlying clays, that have assumed an artesian character. The composition of some of the water samples can only be predicted by simulation runs performed at a temperature higher than that of the outlet (40 °C). These warm waters probably circulate in a restricted area near the town of Nizza Monferrato. The same area has recently been affected by moderate seismicity, which has been accompanied by changes in either the temperature or chemistry, or both, of the ground waters. The changes recorded, interpreted as having been triggered by variations in the local/regional stress load and/or seismic activity, have to be ascribed to the vertical heterogeneity of the aquifers, where waters of different temperature, salinity and chemical composition circulate and occasionally mix.

Wetlands constitute a part of human heritage. It has played a significant role in the development of human culture and society. More over it contains very rich components of biodiversity of local, national, and regional significance. They also provide habitat for a variety of resident and migratory waterfowl, a significant number of endangered species, and a large number of commercially important species. Mangrove wetlands are unique environments of floral-faunal assemblages, providing a complex detritus-based food-web for a number of marine and brackish water organisms. Wetlands in Bangladesh have great importance for the country’s economic, industrial, ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural aspects. There are five types of wetlands available in Bangladesh, such as saltwater wetlands, freshwater wetlands, palustrine wetlands, lacustrine wetlands, and manmade wetlands. There are 43 designated wetlands, and some are under threat from indiscriminate utilization, encroachments and reclamation, urbanization and drawbacks from agricultural development, and flood control. Almost 50% of the country’s people are directly dependent on wetlands resources. The vast majority of the poor people in the wetlands areas are dependent on wetlands resources for their nourishment. Wetlands have potential and have been recognized as a driving force for biodiversity conservation and rural socioeconomic improvement. Smart-use of wetlands can solve the ecosystems problems in the floodplain areas. A comprehensive analysis of the various issues leading to wetlands degradation is made in this study. The country needs an adequate interdisciplinary policy and political will to implement it for sustainable management and protection of wetlands and ecologically sensitive ecosystems in Bangladesh. Therefore, a reliable data bank is provided in this study to enhance the conservation measures initiated by the Government.

Jordan is one of the ten most water scarce countries in the world. In 2014, the share of water per capita per year in Jordan is 120 Cubic Meters (m 3). The water deficit is estimated to be 160 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) in 2015. This deficit is projected to grow up to 490 MCM by 2025. This study discusses the possibility of using solar energy for brackish water desalination in Jordan Valley (JV) to reduce the pressure on the fresh water and the conventional energy consumption associated with the desalination process, as well as, to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions associated with the consumption of energy produced from fossil fuels. Photovoltaic (PV) powered brackish water reverse osmosis desalination technology (RO) has been investigated in this study. The PV system has designed using PVSOL software. The economic feasibility study of use PV system has been done using Average Incremental Cost of Water (AICOW), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Net Present Value (NPV) in several scenarios. The results of the analysis showed that using PV systems for brackish water desalination for a small size single plant at current electricity tariff is not economically feasible for the farmers. But it is feasible for a larger size plant for ten farms or more, or with financial support from the government. The feasibility results showed that using PV systems for brackish water desalination for the government side are economically feasible even for a small size plant.

Stable isotope analyses of biological tissues that grow during different phases of life can be used to trace the geographic location of individuals during different windows of time. We apply this principle and reexamine three prehistoric skeletons excavated in 1964 from archaeological site CA-YOL-117 in Central California. Field evidence suggests they were killed as part of a single violent event. We report new radiocarbon dates and Strontium, Oxygen, Carbon, and Nitrogen isotopic data from first molars, third molars, and bone to examine circumstances surrounding their death. Data suggest two of the three individuals were born, and all three lived their teenage years, near the site they were buried in. However, as adults they lived elsewhere, likely to the north along the Sacramento River. Around AD 1450, upon returning to the territory of their childhood years, they were killed and placed in a mass grave. The data invite a more nuanced interpretation of how we view "local" and "non-local" individuals archaeologically. Overall, the analysis provides an interesting glimpse into the nature of warfare and violence among pre-contact hunter-gatherers of Northern California.

A wetland is an area of land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or seasonally. Such areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water.

Wetlands include swamps , marshes, and bogs, among others. The water found in wetlands can be saltwater , freshwater , or brackish . The world's largest wetland is the Pantanal which straddles Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguayin South America.

Wetlands are considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems.

More than 90% of the population of the Gaza Strip depends on desalinated water for drinking purposes. About 90% of the groundwater is unacceptable for drinking as a result of contamination by nitrate and chloride. One of the major options for resolving the water problems is the utilization of desalination technology for both sea and brackish water. The objective of this article is to address desalination water management in its embryonic stage in the Gaza Strip. The sources of drinking water supply, distribution system and the environmental impact of brine water will be fingered in detail. Desalination facilities range from large seawater plants to small brackish desalination units on a home scale. Governmental, non-governmental and private desalination plants are common. The distribution system of desalinated water is a responsibility of governmental, non-governmental, private small community bodies and even individuals. Disposal of brine water is made either directly or indirectly into the sea, sewage system, poor land, channels, wadies, etc. Brine constituents have an adverse impacton the surrounding environment, e.g., sea life, soil, wastewater treatment plants and the groundwateraquifer. The lack of real environmental impact assessments, especially for mid- and home-scale units may lead to a deterioration of the environment. The fragmentation of the responsibilities of water desalination, distribution of desalinated water and the disposal of brine water suggest that urgent action should be taken (e.g., legislation or establishment of a supervisory body). In other words, strict policies and management actions are to be taken in order to alleviate the health and environmental impact of an important and uncontrolled new system.

A study was conducted in four selected upazilas under four coastal districts through participatory rural appraisal (PRA), household survey and monitoring, sampling, focal group discussions, personal interview, onfarm field visits, institutional consultations, and secondary information. The investigation revealed that the valuable natural resources of the whole region are at the verge of serious degradation. Various causes have been identified, which are responsible for degradation of both resources and production environments. These causes include human population growth, coastal embankment, upstream withdrawal of Ganges water, brackish water shrimp farming, salt production, use of agro-chemicals, industrial activities, commercial activities, over-exploitation, etc. The study also showed that the degradation of natural resources is the reason behind the squeezing of historically dominant livelihood opportunities of the coastal communities. The current scenarios of the coastal ecosystem urge necessary steps to be taken for sustainable management of valuable resources and to create alternative livelihood opportunities for the coastal communities.

Integrated geoelectrical and hydrochemical surveys were used to investigate and delineate different types of groundwater in the Kuala Selangor alluvial aquifer. Previous hydrogeological borehole investigation showed that this aquifer contains several types of groundwater in relation to its salinity. The high salinity of the groundwater in some areas is believed to be due to either saltwater intrusion from the nearby sea or river infiltration during high tide season. The vertical electrical sounding (VES) method was employed to study and map the subsurface variation of resistivity in the area. For each sounding measurement, a total spread length of 300 m was obtained with a vertical depth penetration of about 60 to 75 m. Chemical analysis of the groundwater samples taken from both shallow and deep boreholes was carried out for the water quality determination. A total of 45 VES stations were succesfully established along three parallel roads with a direction almost perpendicular to the coastal line. The distance between stations varies from 1 to 2 km with a maximum length of about 60 km surveyed line. Results of the vertical electrical soundings as well as the hydrochemistry of the groundwater samples show that the soil and groundwater in the study area can be grouped into fresh and brackish water zones. The subsurface resisitivity sections derived from the VES study suggest that the area is dominated by brackish soil and groundwater zones, especially in the area towards the coast. This result appears to agree well with the groundwater pumped from boreholes scattered around in the area. Water drawn from boreholes near the coast showed higher salinity compared to the water pumped from inland boreholes. Chloride values greater than 250 mg/L are considered to represent the brackish zones whilst values less than 250 mg/L represents zones of fresh soil and groundwater.

This paper presents an overview to the state-of-the-art area of mathematical modeling for reverse osmosis (RO) process. As a liquid-solid process, RO constitutes a valuable and vital physical solution for seawater desalination, wastewater depollution, and water treatment comparatively to the largely controversial and polluting chemical processes such as chlorination and coagulation/flocculation. Great works are required in modeling of RO technique in order to obtain a complete and exhaustive model. Complicated and varying raw water qualities and quantities parameters through time and space are rendering RO modeling hard. Be facing the increasing pollution levels and trying to satisfy the drinking water guidelines, RO membrane modification is often required. This situation made modeling this highly dynamic process more difficult to accomplish.
