This document focuses on the relevant historical elements that played a role in the formation of a symphonic music tradition in Costa Rica as well as the governmental policies that led to the establishment of important institutions such as the National Symphony Orchestra and the University of Costa Rica. It also provides a brief description of the economic turmoil that affected the country during the mid-1900s that prompted an important social revolution and its ramifications on the development of the country.
