This is the transcript of a one hour conversation with HH the Dalai Lama, at a Mind & Life conference held in January 2013 at Drepung monastery (South India). It followed a debate about consciousness between a neurobiologist and a Buddhist Monk (Christof Koch and Matthieu Ricard). Its main purpose was to show that doubts about the physicalist approach of consciousness do not arise only from a Buddhist tradition, but also from Western philosophical arguments. The first argument is that mind-brain correlation does not imply one-way causation of consciousness by neural processes. The second argument is that, in the case of consciousness, the concept of emergence is stretched beyond its legitimate range of validity. The third argument, which reaches beyond understanding and requires realization, is that conscious experience is the (too obvious and therefore unnoticed) presupposition of any kind of knowledge, including objective scientific knowledge of neural processes.

My charge is to review for you the relationship between postmodernism and organizational communication. I proceed by mapping this relationship as a convergence of several phenomena. I’ll construct and evaluate this map in six sections. First, I’ll examine the terms modernity and postmodernity as descriptors of the contemporary period characterized by dramatic changes in global politics, economics, and culture. These changes have also been described as postmodernism. Second, I’ll examine how these changes have shaped—and been shaped by—recent changes in postindustrial organizations. These developments have also been described as creating postmodern organizations. Third, I’ll review key assumptions and critical applications of postmodernism as an intellectual resource for theorizing and studying organizational communication. Fourth, I’ll review what are commonly noted as the strengths and weaknesses of this perspective. Fifth, I’ll discuss a specific case from my own research program. In this discussion, I’ll show how postmodern theory can help us to better understand communication in—and about—organizations that have produced nuclear weapons for the United States during the Cold War. Finally, I conclude this chapter with some questions for your own reflection. In an important sense, postmodernism invites you—and your fellow organizational members—to take over “writing” this chapter at that point.

Artificial Intelligence in Cyber security and Network security, 2023

Cyber threats and network attacks are advancing in sophistication with each passing day. The global tally of daily attacks is on the rise, and the methods and techniques employed to breach company systems and personal devices are increasingly diverse. Behind these attacks lie lone actors, organized groups, and even entire governments. The resources available for carrying out such attacks are expanding, and the consequences of cyber attacks today can be severe and far-reaching. These circumstances pose challenges for security teams to keep pace, necessitating smarter solutions. This thesis provides an overview of how artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, including sub-domains like machine learning and deep learning, can be leveraged to address cybersecurity issues. It aims to showcase existing AI technologies and their contributions to enhancing cybersecurity. With AI, security systems can become more predictive and proactive in detecting and responding to threats, while also streamlining manual and repetitive security tasks. Moreover, this thesis includes insights gathered from interviews with employees at If insurance company who specialize in network monitoring and network security. The purpose of these interviews was to identify the challenges they face in their roles. Additionally, the thesis presents potential AI-based solutions for the identified problems.

The Eastern enlargements of the EU increased the bloc's dependency on Russian gas and contributed to a more cautious attitude towards these supplies. This paper assesses the Russian gas dependency of the 11 Central and East European new member states according to the ambition and execution of their national energy strategies and compares it to the gas dependency shifts in the old member states. Two composite indicators of gas dependency-one for supply and one for demand-based on nine individual indicators were used for this evaluation, calculated for 2004, 2019, and 2022. We find that the new member states mostly reduced gas dependency through supply-side measures, while old member states increased dependency through some combination of worsening supply-or demand-side situations until Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The behaviour of member states was influenced by different perceptions of vulnerability and a varying sense of threat in the prewar period. The old member states did not perceive their Russian gas dependency as a significant risk, whereas the new member states viewed this as a high-risk factor. New gas infrastructure capacity has contributed to diversification from Russia, but reducing gas demand did not receive much attention before the invasion.
