Franco Benigno e Daniele Di Bartolomeo hanno dedicato al tema della storia ricorsiva numerosi e solidi interventi frutto sia di una riflessione comune che di percorsi individuali, nati dal confronto con la più matura storiografia europea: per fare due nomi, François Hartog e Reinhart Koselleck. A muoverli non è semplicemente l’idea della ciclicità della storia, il vecchio e un po’ inquietante monito della storia “maestra”; è, piuttosto, la consapevolezza che sia possibile stabilire una misura comprensibile che dia conto della possibilità che gli eventi passati, se evocati e ammessi come realistici, possano determinare il presente e condensarsi di nuovo nel futuro.

L’opera riunisce, in una sola edizione, le tre ristampate lungo il XVIII secolo (nel 1724; 1758-59 e 1792) dall’originale guida di Carlo Celano del 1692, impressa da Giacomo Raillard a Napoli. Si tratta della più importante e rinomata guida cittadina, indispensabile negli studi accademici come in ogni forma di contributo a tema napoletano. Le Notizie infatti sono considerabili più come un’enciclopedia di napoletanità che una mera guida, e comparabili ad un romanzo per la prosa e la capacità di portare sui luoghi il lettore, raccontando esse l’arte, la cultura, i monumenti, le strade, gli usi, la devozione religiosa, le tradizioni, la storia ed ogni aspetto di una Napoli, dai greci ai Borbone, riflessa nell’Europa e nel mondo.

Il volume Analecta Romana Instituti Danici, Supplementum LIII, dell'Accademia di Danimarca in Roma, pubblicato da Edizioni Quasar, è il risultato del convegno Reflections: Harbour City Deathscape in Roman Italy, tenutosi presso l'Accademia Danese in Roma dal 14 al 16 settembre 2016, grazie al supporto finanziario della Carlsberg Foundation. Il lavoro è nato da due progetti di ricerca: Death and Identity in Ostia: A study of funerary material and cutural diversity in the Port city of Rome e dal progetto The family back home: The unseen social network of roman harbour cities. Lo scopo del convegno e dei successivi atti è stato quello di definire come e quanto le comunità romane di età imperiale fossero socialmente mobili e pronte ad accettare stranieri ed immigrati. In cima alla gerarchia dell'argomentazione della conferenza vi è quindi la sfera funeraria delle culture presenti nelle città marittime, ricca di informazioni sugli individui, le esperienze di vita e le culture che si sono incontrate. Difatti, il chiaro impatto dell'integrazione sociale è definibile sulla base della composizione demografica e della matrice religiosa e sociale delle città portuali che, naturalmente orientate verso il commercio, erano vissute da società mobili e inclusive. L'evidenza funeraria, testimone dalla composizione demografica e religiosa, viene così a costituire una grande risorsa per la raccolta di informazioni su come ogni individuo percepisse il proprio posto nella società e nell'ambito familiare. La struttura del volume richiama quella dell'organizzazione del convegno, in cui nella prima parte si affrontano i temi riguardanti l'Italia peninsulare, mentre l'ultimo gruppo di interventi riguarda le province imperiali; i contributi sono scritti in parte in inglese britannico e in parte in inglese americano.

Il demone e l'architetto «(L'architetto sc.) è un potere che si mantiene all'interno dell'architettura, che vive nella costruzione architettonica stessa poiché, una volta compiuta, attraverso la disposizione dei muri e delle aperture e attraverso una catena di significazioni (spesso connessa all'esterno dell'architettura stessa) riesce a sua volta a disporre, organizzare e a significare i corpi che la attraversano. L'architetto non esercita quindi semplicemente un potere che separa attraverso la violenza, ma un potere che amministra e governa ciò che è separato» (p. 36). La definizione dell'architettura come dispositivo, come un sapere che compie un gesto sovrano, quello di separare per governare, e di governare per separare di nuovo, è l'assunto fondamentale della ricerca di Edoardo Fabbri sull'architettura come luogo topico di una sedimentazione delle forme di potere (Edoardo Fabbri, L'architettura come archè. Appunti sull'hortus apertus, Efesto Edizioni, Roma 2020). Studio di archeologia filosofica in senso agambeniano, il libro osserva nel sapere dell'architetto un elemento macchinico, quel macchinismo che consente la riunificazione di corpi, tempi, passioni e vite confiscate dalla città all'aperto e da quella consegnate all'architettura per una ricongiunzione asservita al dispositivo politico, dove forma-città e forma-politica rendono indistinguibile la loro presa sull'uomo. Non è un caso che la ricerca si soffermi sulla diacronia di una spazialità cittadina, che esige la ripartizione statutaria dello spazio urbano in zone pubbliche e private, laddove è proprio questa distinzione a caratterizzare la città dalla vita a lei esterna. Separare l'uomo dall'abitare, il lavoro dall'amore, l'arte dalla vita, sinanco le competenze tecniche utili a fabbricarsi una casa dall'esperienza del singolo. E' questo il cuore di tenebra dell'architettura, le cui ombre diventano ancora più scure se si osservano gli artefatti delle società pre-politiche, e quindi pre-architettoniche: siti paleolitici come Göbekli Tepe o Stonehange parlano ancora allo spettatore moderno di una forma di vita inseparata, dove abitare il mondo coincide con il viverne la sacralità, dove erigere menhir coincide con il fare il sacro, il rito, la comunità, l'arte e l'amore. Potenza unificatrice dell'architettura che i Greci percepivano nitidamente. Il primo architetto della tradizione sarebbe stato Trofonio, il quale avrebbe inaugurato l'architettura in Occidente ergendo, assieme al fratello Agamede e per espresso volere di Apollo, una soglia marmorea nel santuario di Delfi. Lo stesso Trofonio, successivamente, sarebbe divenuto una specie di demone ctonio: dopo aver ingannato il re dell'Elide, committente di una sofisticata costruzione architettonica ipogea destinata a proteggere il suo leggendario tesoro, ed avendo causato in questo modo la morte del fratello, Trofonio sarebbe sprofondato nelle viscere della terra, in Beozia. Figura emblematica, questa di Trofonio, attraverso la quale l'architetto appare ab origine lo strumento necessario del potere (il tempio, la reggia, il re, il dio, il denaro), mantenendo al contempo in forma tragica la possibilità di un rapporto primigenio con l'aperto. Questo rapporto, d'altronde, era presupposto proprio dagli incubanti che si recavano nel suo santuario a Lebadea di Beozia, dove gli iniziati ai suoi misteri potevano abbandonarsi ad una trance di tipo sciamanico per ottenere la conoscenza 1. Questo potere divisorio del gesto architettonico ha avuto in Occidente il suo spazio elettivo. Tuttavia, proprio l'Occidente ha esperito una forma dell'abitare esterna e recalcitrante a qualsiasi dispositivo politico e architettonico, ovvero la forma di vita cenobitica. Dai padri del deserto al francescanesimo il cenobio ha costituito un paradigma alternativo a quello politico, formando una istanza destituente rispetto all'architettura stessa. Ed è a questa esperienza che Fabbri dedica buona parte delle sue analisi. La distinzione fra la vita politica e quella cenobitica, fra la polis e il monastero, fra il chiuso della città, simbolicamente rappresentato dalla cerchia delle mura, e l'aperto del cenobio, con il convento aperto sul paesaggio circostante, viene così riassunta dall'autore: «A differenza della polis, 1 Per la tradizione mitologica su Trofonio: Charax in Scolii ad Aristofane, Nuvole, 508; Omero, Inno ad Apollo, 294-299; Pindaro, frgg. 2-4 Snell-Mahler.
