'ARABIYYA: JURNAL STUDI BAHASA ARAB
This study aims to determine the isti'arah language style (metaphor) in the hadith of the Prophet from the book Al-Lukluk wa Al-Marjan. This research is a literature research that uses descriptive analytical method. The descriptive approach is based on the study of scientific sources related to the topic, while the analytical method is based on scientific analysis of the hadiths of the Prophet SAW. which is included in the metaphorical style as well as the opinions of scholars and balaghah experts. The results of this study indicate that metaphors in the Prophet's hadith from the book Al-Lukluk wa Al-Marjan are widespread in various topics, including in the chapters of aqidah, worship, mu'amalat, morals and others. This research has confirmed the fluency of the isti'arah language style, including Al-Ijaz which is to give many meanings with short words, including visualizing a meaning and giving descriptions of things that are abstract, especially those related to the...

Decolonizing the future. Folk art environments and the temporality of heritage2020 •
In this chapter, I would like to examine folk art environments from the point of view of heritage. Folk environments are built spaces created by non-professional artists or architects, often peculiar characters living in the margins of society. To create such spaces, the artists make lavish use of recycled materials, including modern construction materials, broken artefacts, cheap decorations and objects in varying states of decay. Although there are several historical precedents, folk art environments seem to have developed mostly from the late 19th century onwards and can be considered, in many ways, a by-product of modernity, democratization and the industrial revolution. I argue that the logic of folk art environments has much to tell archaeologists and heritage practitioners about value, emotion and temporality, which are all fundamental principles in the production of heritage. They are are useful both for interrogating assumed concepts of past, present and future in heritage studies and for proposing novel and more imaginative ways of dealing with heritage.

Our Nice Quiet Sleep2024 •
The current situation in Ukraine "rhymes" (as Mark Twain would put it) with the situation in Europe just before World War II. Chamberlain believed that appeasement would bring "peace for our time," and that everyone could now get a "nice, quiet sleep." Churchill had his doubts. One of them was proved to be correct.
Coping with Excess: How Organizations, Communities and Individuals Manage Overflows
Afterword: a surplus of ideas2014 •
When do we cross the border between enough and too much? When does a comfortable abundance become an oppressive surfeit? When does choice move from being a privilege to a burden? This book finishes up a series of three by the same editors which address these questions and more, exploring many aspects of excess, overabundance , and overflow. These extremes might be the best way to characterize our world, populated by an almost unimaginable 8 billion people, hundreds of millions migrating and seeking refuge, where the obese far outnumber the undernourished and middle-class homes are filled to bursting with goods and possessions. Our consumer marketplace is driven into perpetual motion, as we watch today's valuables turn into tomorrow's trash. Overflow, or perhaps surfeit, is also the best way to describe the wealth of new ideas circulating in these essays. Trained as an archeologist, I always think about overflow in terms of material stuff; but this book takes us in other directions, into overflows of time, emotions, attention, and activities-describing a proliferation of new categories, whole new branches in cultural taxonomies, and a continuing flow of new things that cannot yet be categorized. But overflowing also means forgetting, cut not in a conscious decision process, but instead in a haphazard undisciplined way that leaves gaps in our memories, people and places that seem familiar but which we cannot name. Overflow itself is a liquid metaphor that easily accords with the many word choices that social scientists have used to discuss culture, place, and time.
