Rashid Submitted by: Atta ur Rehman Roll No: 33521 Date: 18-08-2020 Role of International Organizations The role of international Organization is to provide platform for international cooperation between the states and act as a mediating force to solve the disputes between the states. One basic agenda of international organizations is to achieve global governance which is however far from materialization. International Organizations are of two types, Inter-Governmental Organization and International Non-Governmental organizations. The international organization play important role in setting up the international rules and regulations as in the case of UN and also in setting up the international trade system, such as, WTO. The international Organizations also play important role in defense cooperation in case of NATO and In health sector like WHO and INGOs like Red Crescent\Red Cross. There plethora of international organizations regarding almost every issue of world community. The INGOs are formed by communities, individuals and social activist groups to achieving their specific goals or simply for social work, the religious groups are the largest group forming the INGOs. Theoretically the role of IGOs and INGOs Vary in the opinions of different schools of thoughts of IR. The Realists believe that IGOs have a little role to play for international peace as states are the superior entity in the world system on the other Hand Liberals believe that IGOs would replace states as the form of governance as the global cooperation and trade will increase. Functions of International organizations: Setting Norms: The International Organizations being a platform for global communications and cooperation between the States have the ability to set the International norms which will help to implement an international conduct. Law of Sea is one of the examples that how International Organizations can regulate the global activities. International Rules: As International Norms International rules are ratified by IGOs with the consent of the member countries which consists of most of countries in the world. Application of International Rules: IGOs also have vital role to play in implementation of the international rules and regulation as the represent a collective understanding of the world community and can implement rules of collectively beneficiary for world community. Technical Support: The International organizations like World bank and IMF UN-FAO can provide technical assistance to member states as these organizations poses vast experience regarding different issues and also have access to data around the world. Data: The Organizations Like FAO, WHO and World Bank have conducted world wide studies on many issues and posses a vast data that states use for their own benefit. Financial Support: Financial Organizations Like IMF ad World Bank are formed to support States with financial crisis. The large capital of these Organizations is funded by the member states. The organizations provide loans and economical uplifts schemes to any struggling economy. International monetary institution are often alleged for dept trapping the vulnerable states to exploit their resources on behalf of greater powers. Mediation: One of the fundamental purposes of international organizations is dispute resolving or mediation between the adversarial states to resolve the disputes for the goal of attaining long term world peace. However, the IGOs like UN have largely considered to be failed in achieving this goal as most dispute are unresolved even after the creation of UN and have even escalated to violent conflicts for example, Kashmir conflict, Palestine Conflict and Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict. Disaster Management: International Disaster or Humanitarian Crisis are often dealt by the IGOs and INGOs the natural calamities and Civil Wars both cause crisis that a state alone cannot handle and the IGOs like UN: UNDP, UNHCR, WHO together with INGOs like International Red Cross\Crescent provide vital support to manage these situations.
