In last decades, the safety of both artworks and restorers during cleaning operations, has been the subject of many research works, aimed at the development of gel-systems that confine the solvent action to the very surface thus preventing its absorption into the paint layers and minimizing operators’ exposure. In this research work, a totally sustainable approach has been presented for the cleaning of artworks. In particular new organogels made of bio-compatible components, were evaluated as cleaning tool for the removal of paint varnishes. The gels consist of a polymer derived from renewable bio-materials, poly(-3hydroxybutyrrate), and different green solvents (γ-valerolactone GVL, ethyl lactate EL, dimethyl carbonate DMC). These gels, previously characterized in order to investigate thermal and mechanical properties, were tested for the removal of natural and acrylic varnishes over different binding medium (linseed oil, egg and glue). The gels were first tested on painting mock-up...

Sustainable development aims to bring a new perspective to our lives without compromising customer needs and quality. Along with sustainable development many innovative solutions came out. One of them is sustainable green cleaning products and techniques. Today, emissions from conventional cleaning products may cause severe health and environmental issues. Especially sick building syndromes such as eye, skin and respiratory irritations are main health effects of them. They may also contribute to global warming, ozone layer depletion, aquatic toxicity, and air pollution. It has already been proven that misuse, storage, disposal and production stages of cleaning products can cause stream pollution. As an emerging and innovative sustainable technique “green cleaning” refers to environmental improvements such as pollution and greenhouse gas emission reduction, conservation of resources, preservation of wildlife, and reduction of plastic and waste that arise from used conventional techni...

The Modular Cleaning Program (MCP) was originally conceived to assist the conservator in the formulation and selection of aqueous cleaning systems. Upon using the system, it became apparent that many of the advantages of the approach could also be applied to both solvent gels and free solvents. The two overarching principles of the MCP are the use of small amounts of stock solutions that can be mixed to make a large number of test cleaning solutions and the use of physical constants as a basis for all calculations. The conservator decides on a cleaning strategy and uses the program to work though variables to determine the optimal cleaning system. The computer takes care of the bookkeeping issues associated with formulating complex mixtures. The software provides a context showing which parameters may be changed in a cleaning, and the conservator chooses the direction of the testing. Using small volumes of test solutions offers advantages in cost, ecological impact, and heath and sa...

The introduction of new guidelines and regulations on chemical production, use, treatment or disposal demanded the development of greener alternatives to conventional products and methodologies. This review briefly presents some of the most promising innovative systems applied in the cleaning of cultural heritage-lasers, green solvents, microemulsions or micellar solutions, bacterial cells or enzymes, ionic liquids and gels. Their advantages and drawbacks are discussed, along with further improvements.

For the peculiar artworks such as stucco plasterworks cleaning is troublesome for different reasons: weak mechanical behavior, high porosity and resulting water absorption, partial water solubility in the case of gypsum plaster. The choice of the cleaning method, especially as concerns gypsum based stucco materials, is crucial in assuring the lowest harmfulness possible together with a good level of efficacy. With the term agar we name a powder product composed mainly of polysaccharides and extracted from red algae species. When boiled with water, in a percentage range in between 0.5 and 5, it produces a colloidal solution that gellifies towards 35 °C. It can be used gelified and cold placed on a plan stucco surface, tepid and fluid poured on a surface relief or otherwise milled till a snow consistency, then pressed as a pad onto any surface; it has a high content of water which is slowly released into the porous substrate system. Hence the water-soluble components of soiling presen...

This article examines how developmental patterns found in second language (L2) acquisition result from a complex interaction of influence from the first language (L1) and input from the L2 under constraints imposed by an innate language faculty. Evidence comes from a large body of research on L2 phonology, morphology and syntax.
