A reference based analysis framework for analyzing system call traces

Abstract Examining the behavior of a large legacy software system helps understand its functionality. Dynamic analysis techniques are well suited for this purpose. Runtime information is typically represented in the form of execution traces; however, the amount of information contained in a trace, of even a small program, can be very large and usually overwhelming. It becomes important to filter these traces and present only the information that adds value to the comprehension process.

When a fault occurs in the field developers usually collect failure reports (traces) containing function-call traces. (A function-call trace is a sequence of functions executed by a program.) Fault diagnosis in failure traces collected from the field is an arduous task due to the volume and size of trace contents. Previously, we have conducted several research studies to diagnose faulty functions in function-call level traces of field failure. During our studies, we have found that different faults in closely related functions occur with similar function-call traces. We also discovered form our studies and studies from other researchers that a classification or clustering algorithm can be trained on the function-call traces of a fault in a function and then can be used to diagnose different faults in the traces of the same function. In this paper, we propose an emerging descriptive theory based on the propositions grounded in these empirical findings. There is scarcity of theorizing empirical findings in software research and our work is a step towards this direction. The emerging theory is stated as: a fault in a function can be diagnosed from a function-call trace if the traces of the same or a different fault in that function are already known to a clustering or classification algorithm. We evaluate this theory using the criteria described in the literature. This emerging theory can facilitate in reducing the time spent in diagnosing the origin of fault in the field traces. However, we understand that more studies are needed to ascertain this theory.

The paper is aimed at defending the following three claims: (1) that the objective value of privacy may change in time (as its significance is relative to concrete social context); (2) that in the contemporary world, in which the state’s and global corporations power to intrude upon our liberty, especially upon its variety called informational privacy, has become due to technological developments particularly strong, the need for protection of privacy has become especially urgent (given our attachment to the axiological fundamentals of liberal democracies), and therefore its objective value is very high; and (3) that in spite of this high objective value of privacy, it does not correspond to its subjective valuation by the ‘typical’ citizen of contemporary liberal democracies, who, if Byung-Chul Han’s picture of our society as ‘the burnout one’ is correct, has become mentally exhausted by overstimulation and overachievement, and for whom, consequently, the central value has become flatly understood happiness (as material comfort and security), rather than liberty and its constitutive part, which is the right to privacy.

Selçuklu Devleti döneminde İran'ın orta bölgesi "Irak-ı Acem" bölgesi olarak biliniyordu. Pehlevi yönetiminin başlangıcına kadar bu unvanı koruyan bu bölge, tarih boyunca her zaman İran'ın en önemli coğrafi bölgelerinden biri olarak kabul edilmiştir. İran'ın mevcut illeri arasında 14 il, farklı tarihsel dönemlerde tamamen veya kısmen Irak-ı Acem topraklarında bulunuyordu. Türklerin bu bölgeye yerleşme tarihi Gazneliler dönemine kadar uzanmaktadır ve o tarihten bu yana Türk asıllı yönetimler Rey, İsfahan, Kazvin, Hemedan gibi bu bölgenin önemli şehirlerini kendilerine başkent olarak seçmişlerdir ve Türkler her zaman bu bölgenin ana sakinlerinden biri olmuşlardır. İran Türklerinin bibliyografyası üzerine çeşitli çalışmalar yapılmış olmasına rağmen, deliller söz konusu bölgenin araştırmacılar tarafından ihmal edildiğini göstermektedir. Öte yandan mevcut araştırmada gösterdiği gibi İran'ın orta bölgesi Türk kültürü, dili ve edebiyatı açısından oldukça zengindir. Bu araştırmada antropoloji, tarih, dil bilimi ve edebiyat alanlarında makale (121 vaka), kitap (260 vaka) ve tez (46 vaka) şeklinde toplam 427 eser tanıtılmıştır. Genel olarak, yayınlanan eser sayısına göre incelenen iller ve bölgeler üç kategoriye ayrılabilir: Güçlü (Hemedan, Merkezi ve Kazvin illerinin yanı sıra Halacistan bölgesi), orta (Kum ve Kermanşah illeri) ve zayıf (Kürdistan, Çaharmahal ve Bahtiyari, Tahran, Alborz, İsfahan, Luristan ve İlam illeri). İran'ın orta bölgesindeki toplumsal değişimlerin hızı ve Türk dili ve kültürünün kırılganlığı göz önüne alındığında, Türkoloji perspektifinden uzmanlaşmış çalışmaların yapılması oldukça gerekli görünmektedir. Orta İran Türklerinin pek çok Türkolog tarafından bilinmemesi nedeniyle bu coğrafyada sistematik çalışmalar yapılması bilim dünyası için parlak başarılara imza atabilir.
