15th Word Conference on Earthquake Engineering (15WCEE), 24-28 September, Lisbon, Portugal , 2012
All current seismic design codes are based on a prescriptive Force-Based Design approach. In this approach, a linear elastic analysis is performed and inelastic energy dissipation is considered indirectly, through a response reduction factor (or behaviour factor). Building codes define different ductility classes and specify corresponding response reduction factors based on the material, configuration, and detailing. Codes also differ significantly in specifying the effective stiffness of RC members, procedures to estimate drift, and allowable limits on drift. This paper presents a comparative study of different ductility classes and corresponding response reduction factors, reinforcement detailing provisions, and a case study of seismic performance of a ductile RC frame building designed using four major codes, viz. ASCE7 (United States), EN1998-1 (Europe), NZS 1170.5 (New Zealand) and IS 1893 (India). The performance of the test building is evaluated using the Displacement Modification Method (DMM) as well as the guidelines of ASCE-41.
Most of the population of world is being concentrated in the metropolitan cities. Since the land areas of metropolitan cities are scarce with the high number of population, to counteract this problem, the structures which are being used as both commercial and residential purposes must grow vertically instead of growing horizontally. This vertical growth must be implemented to counteract the recurring growth of the population in most of the parts in the world. In this study, the vertical growth is referred to a high-rise building, and a comparative analysis of dynamic loads are carried out on these high-rise structures using various International Standard Codes (American, European and Indian), with the inclusive of recently developed IS 1893:2016.

This article analyzes the US Bureau of Indian Affairs model Indian school exhibit at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition as an artifact of spatial and social relations. It uses architectural drawings to examine how assimilationist ideals were spatialized and displayed in a functioning industrial school that structured education, race, and morality. At the same time, it considers the decorations of indigenous material culture and the resistances and ambivalences of the children who performed there. By considering the school as a stage for many forms of agency this article shifts the discourse from the exhibit’s planners to those who lived it.

Extensive researches in the field of earthquake resistant structural designing techniques have taken place in past few years and several new methods providing far better results than the conventional methods have been proposed. Force Based Design (FBD) or the conventional designing approach and Direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) or performance based approach are the two widely popular design approaches. As the use of structural analysis and designing software's is more popular these days, so with the help of ETABS Ultimate 15.2.2 three models of a G+11 irregular tall hotel building are designed (model-1 based on FBD method using IS-1893(PART-1) : 2002 norms, Model-2 based on DDBD method using IS-1893(PART-1) : 2002 norms, Model-3 based on DDBD method using ASCE 7-10 norms) and the demand parameters are compared for eight different set of spectral accelerations. Performance based is a comparatively new approach but as its working has a harmonious combination of efficiency and economy it provides excellent results.
