THREE DECADES OF POST-SOCIALIST TRANSITION
The new social reality of ex-socialist architecture2019 •
The new social reality of ex-socialist architecture Abstract: The architectural creative process implies the change of the existing context, which, due to its application of abstract intervention, suggests a certain level of utopia or ideology. The nature of the transformation is determined to the accepted abstract value system and the imaginary projection of changes. The reality in the period of socialism seeks to transform into an ideal type, a universal model, with the aim of optimizing living conditions. Architecture becomes a model of the transformation of social reality. The concrete user turns into an abstraction an objective norm, which brings architecture more to a system with macro perception. The period of post-modern and contemporary architectural practices overlaps with the contemporary political and economic context to the extent that they are vague boundaries of their separation. The problem of the manipulation of real and concrete is simultaneously portrayed as inseparable elements of the concept. The principles of social in architecture are examined within specific ideological frameworks by exploring the phenomenon of abandonment and devastation of case studies from the period of socialism, and their reuse within the new socioeconomic context and current European migration crisis. Previous social functions of architecture are compared with their current use by migrants within specific local conditions and particular attention to elements of social context transformation and the role of architecture. Current use of facilities at the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina is critically examined within the contemporary theoretical research of bottom-up concepts and their social imperative, defining the real problem and its social benefits. Case studies are analysed in relation to micro and macro levels, investigating architecture through social processes with the aim of defining the level of a decision-making process, user-defined space, and the real significance for the community.

From "National Style" to "Rationalized Construction": Mass-Produced Housing, Style, and Discourse in the East German Journal Deutsche Architektur, 1956–19642015 •
This article examines architectural critique of housing and style as it unfolded in the East German journal Deutsche Architektur (German architecture) from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s. Through an analysis of articles published in the journal as well as primary source documents, Emily Pugh investigates the reception of newly built housing developments in East Germany by a group of influential socialist architects, historians, and critics who were then writing for Deutsche Architektur. Pugh highlights individual architects’ attempts to subvert or resist the control of state and party authorities and considers how these individuals’ efforts might have influenced the development of the East German building economy. She also argues that these architects’ understanding of architectural modernism differed from that of their counterparts in the Cold War West, having been influenced by political and economic circumstances specific to East Germany.

A 'Relation Between Relations: Socialist Mass Housing and Residential Towers of Vojvode Stepe Boulevard, Belgrade, Serbia2023 •
This paper investigates the residential towers of Block 10 in Vojvode Stepe Boulevard, Belgrade, Serbia. The two towers (buildings no. 39 and 40) were initially designed by Branko Aleksić in 1969 and redesigned three years later by Aleksić and his co-author, Stana Aleksić. Taking into account the housing policy of the day, the urban planning of the Boulevard and the role played by the towers' investor, association 'INPROS', the paper approaches architects as intermediaries. The designers are understood as part of a network addressing Belgrade's housing deficit, themselves navigating a tight creative space determined by forces operating beyond their control. At the same time, their work is recognized as bent on producing a distinct set of subjectivities, with each referring, individually, to a pattern of political organisation, consumer culture, gender, or class. The towers are thus probed for their capacity to act as a medium, both in themselves and as part of a larger whole.

Decorative-formative and spatial organization of representative architecture 1930s − early 1950s as a reflection of the state-ideological goal2018 •
On account of their size, their social importance and the radical way in which they are architecturally formulated the housing complexes of the post–war period provoke an ongoing critical discussion of the questions: “How do we want to live?” and “How should we live?” Opinions are very much divided over the dimensions, the normative floor plans, and the social structure of these large housing developments. The debate seems to be conducted between three different camps. There are those who suggest that there is a direct causality between form and function and attribute the social tensions within housing complexes to their external structure. Others uphold the autonomy of architecture and in the process either do not consider social policy and the residents or even hold them responsible for the negative image of this form of housing. The text that follows below can be allotted to the third camp: this viewpoint recognizes the complex interaction between form and political, economic, and social practices and examines their relationship to the autonomous development of the form of housing, which has its own history of development and an inherent rationality. Starting from architecture’s ability to operate using its own tools in a heterogeneous field between ideological, economic, and political practices, in this text consideration is given not only to how new social demands on existing housing can be met but also to how, in view of these hotly debated buildings, architects can in the first place adopt a critical and socially relevant approach.
