Introduces the importance of metaphysics (and philosophy) to cognitive science.

Meta-metaphysics2018 •
Meta-metaphysics concerns the nature and methodology of metaphysics and metaphysical inquiry. The emergence of meta-metaphysics as a systematic area of study is relatively recent, going back to the late 1990s. But the issues pursued in meta-metaphysics are certainly not novel: an age old question about the nature of metaphysics is whether it is possible to obtain knowledge about metaphysical matters in the first place, and if it is, how this knowledge is obtained.
I characterize metaphysics as it has traditionally conceived and provide a partial defense of its viability.
This paper would like to elucidate on the contemporary perspective of metaphysics, by tracing its etymological foundation in the ancient period. It primarily focuses on the metaphysics of: Universals, Space, Change, Causality, Reality and Appearance, Mind-Body Relation, Freedom, Modality, and Necessary Being.

What is the desire for metaphysics? Is it like all desires, possessing the typical intentional structure of a subject directing at an object and thus exceeding his own boundaries? A positive answer to this question would lead to a tautology, since both the desire and the metaphysics denote the person’s going beyond himself. This collection is founded upon the argument that the desire for metaphysics is greater than any other human desire, due to the nature of metaphysics itself, thanks to which it cannot simply be considered as an object like all other objects. Metaphysics is not just a worldview regarding the things that exist in the world, human nature, the essence of human consciousness, and so on. The metaphysics to which human desire is directed denotes the evident and all-embracing consciousness regarding the existence of an abstract and profound level in the world of existing things that is simultaneously responsible for their formation and for the fact that they can never be exhausted by their manifestations. The described desire for metaphysics, as the ultimate impetus of philosophical engagement, is present in the depth of each of the articles in this collection. Yet the variance apparent in the articles of this collection reveals a fundamental point regarding metaphysics: due to its holistic nature, it can never be exhausted in particular contents, and is still always revealed in the commitment to the particular experience in which it appears.

What does "metaphysics," the word and the idea, mean2023 •
Many, if not all, philosophers own a meaning of the word metaphysics. In this essay I intend to demonstrate that the lexical and user's meaning of the word are often far apart. In the spirit of A. J. Ayer, evidence suggests that it is largely nonsense and yet it is what most philosophers claim to be a study of "reality." This essays offers alternatives.
MA course taught at NYCU in 2022-23
Metaphilosophy (Course Syllabus)There are many reasons to do philosophy: for university credits, for fun, to challenge authority, to expand conceptual horizons, to become a better person, or to discover the meaning of life. But how do you actually do it? What is philosophy, really? And how is philosophy different from other disciplines, if at all? Many of these questions are as old as philosophy itself, and we will explore them in this class. Topics of discussion will include "armchair" methods (conceptual analysis, conceptual explication, conceptual engineering, thought experiments), criticisms of those methods (experimental philosophy's "negative program"), the "proper" role for intuition in philosophy, the use of scientific data in philosophy (including experimental philosophy), cross-cultural differences, and the aims of philosophy. Objectives The goal of this course is to improve students' understanding of and capacity to succeed in the discipline of philosophy, by doing philosophy about philosophy. We will develop and analyze different frameworks about the nature of philosophy, and in so doing, nurture students' abilities to reason critically and creatively, as well as to present their ideas in discussion, writing and presentations. Students will also gain familiarity with the fundamental assumptions and methods of metaphilosophy. As several weeks will be devoted to developments in experimental philosophy, students will also learn how to understand, evaluate, and if they like, pursue, experimental-statistical research.
