To enable students majoring in translation at the College of Languages and Translation to read, identify the lexical and syntactic features of legal documents and hence comprehend their content, this article proposes an instructional module for teaching English for Legal Purposes (ELP). The module should be based on the assessment of the students’ proficiency level in English and analysis of their academic and professional need. Ownership statements and seals have been extensively discussed in the literature for their role in revealing agencies and reading culture. This presentation focuses on the historiographical ramifications of destroyed ownership marks, specifically examining eighteenth-century mark-erasing practices on manuscripts. The study argues that these practices unveil dynamics of intra-elite politics and illuminate the relationship between the palace and the elites. Against this backdrop, we investigate the destroyed ownership statements and seals of Ayasofya Library, established in 1740 by Mahmud I. The library, while providing a space for display, also acted as an epicenter of elite participation in the gift-giving process. Surveying the erased marks in this library may shed light on power relations at the center. This presentation explores complications arising from destroyed seals and ownership marks of Hacı Beşir Ağa and Tiryaki Mehmed Paşa in Ayasofya Library, investigating their collections’ potential terminus. It raises essential questions about what the destroyed material may reveal about individuals’ collections during that era. By analyzing the erasure of ownership marks and seals in the Ayasofya Library, this study offers a fresh perspective on the historical context of power dynamics, elite interactions, and the intricacies of manuscript ownership during the eighteenth century. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the cultural and political landscape of this period.
