ABSTRACT
The article explores the intersection between electronic
music and theatre starting from the show Six characters
in search of an author directed by Anca Bradu. Analysing
the theories of Roland Barthes and Glenn Gould, this
study discusses the influence of technology on music and
the concept of author. We investigate the concepts of
simulacrum and hyperreality in the context of Luigi
Pirandello’s play and the context of electronic music,
highlighting parallels between characters and the virtual
instruments. We detail the musical and theatrical aspects
of the show, including the performance of the actors and
the representation of the characters by means of musical
instruments. We also examine semiotic and linguistic
aspects, such as the wordplay and the text’s
deconstruction. On the whole, this article offers a
complete and detailed analysis of the interaction between
music, theatre, technology, and semiotics, stressing the
importance and the complexity of these connections.
Key words
Electronic music, theatre, technology, virtual instruments,
simulacrum, hyperreality, metalanguage.
PRETEXT
Six characters in search of an author is one of Luigi
Pirandello’s best-known works. Written in 1921, it is a
modernist play regarded as one of the most influential
texts of the 20th century. Questioning the concepts of
truth, appearance, and artistic authority, the play
explores, in a metalinguistic key, the complexity of
reality and of human identity. Fiction and reality blend in
a drama which, as Pirandello explains in the preface to
the play, “does not manage to get presented” (Pirandello,
2008, 16) because the author is absent. Severed from any
narrative support, the six characters come into being
gradually in the stage space searching for their own
signification.
This article has at its core the music of the show
Six characters in search of an author directed by Anca
Bradu at the beginning of the year 2023 and staged at the
“Tomcsa Sándor” Theatre in Odorheiu Secuiesc.
The music of the performance started from several
general semiotic themes, such as: 1) the theme of
metalanguage and communication – which questions the
issue of the author – and of the open work – and
2) the theme of signs and signification – which questions
the issue of representation and of simulacrum.

autorului – și a operei deschise – și 2) cea a semnelor și a
semnificației – prin care este chestionată problematica
reprezentării și a simulacrului.

HYPOTEXT
Reflecting on Glenn Gould as a precursor of
postmodernism, Jean-Jacques Nattiez asked himself
several questions about the path music was taking “in its
quality as language and communication system”, in the
context of its connection to the new technologies and the
new means of communication, which are in their turn
going through an accelerated evolutionary process
(Nattiez, 2007). Nattiez made some speculations at the
time about the future of music starting from several
“prophetic” statements of pianist Glenn Gould who, in
the 1980s, believed that the new communication
technologies would influence music in such a way that
year 2000 would be the death year of the concert
(Nattiez, 2007, 127). Gould opened at that time the path
of the performer-editor or even of the audience taking
part in the creative act, of the listeners who, due to the
electronic transmission channel of musical information –
a channel that thus allows for technical interventions in
the recorded material – become composers in their own
right (Page, 1989, 347).
From the perspective of communication theory, Glenn
Gould’s viewpoint stresses the performer as the second
sender, who has the total freedom to find “new manners
of performance that the composer himself could not have
envisioned”(Nattiez, 2007, 128) As a matter of fact, by
his own manner of performance, which excluded public
production, Gould preferred to withdraw and confine
himself in an intimate space more appropriate for the
process of recording and editing music pieces. It is
notorious that Glenn Gould performed for the last time in
a public concert on April 10, 1964, in his recital at
Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, and completely
gave up live performances after that date, replacing the
always unpredictable context of the stage with the
precision of the studio. Through that gesture, Glenn
Gould did not merely anticipate, but also supported the
death of the concert like another death of the author, in
which the musical text played in the intimacy of the
studio was freed from any exterior influences, especially
from those connected to the composer’s contextual area
which is culturally determined and consecrated by
tradition.
Coincidentally, Glenn Gould’s retreat from concert life
relatively overlapped, chronologically, the first
publication of the essay The Death of the Author (1967),
an essay in which Roland Barthes heralded the
desacralization of the individualized, sacrosanct,
demiurgic image of the “Author”, an image that had
emerged with the advent of the Reformation, the French
rationalism, and the English empiricism. Starting from
the meaning of Stéphane Mallarmé’s entire poetics which
“supressed the author in favour of the writing” and
arriving at the surrealists, the desacralization caused the
concept of reader to be seen in a different light: “a text is
made of multiple writings, drawn from many cultures
and entering into mutual relations of dialogue, parody,
contestation, but there is one place where this
multiplicity is focused and that place is the reader, not,
as was hitherto said, the author. The reader is the space
on which all the quotations that make up a writing are
inscribed without any of them being lost; a text’s unity
lies not in its origin but in its destination. Yet this
destination cannot any longer be personal: the reader is
without history, biography, psychology; he is simply
that someone who holds together in a single field all the
traces by which the written text is constituted” (Barthes,
1977, 148).

HIPOTEXT
transmisie a informației muzicale – canalul permițând
individualizate, demiurgice, sacrosante a „Autorului”,
este autorul, cum s-a spus până acum, este cititorul;
( Barthes, 1977, 148).

Like Roland Barthes, Glenn Gould questioned the
relationship between the position of the composer who
was removed from the pedestal of tradition and of the
performer liberated from prejudice: “I wonder why we
are so concerned with a pretended fidelity to the tradition
of the composer’s generation rather than to the
performer’s generation. Why make the effort of playing
Beethoven the way we suppose he might have played?”
(Nattiez, 2007, 128).
These intermingling multiple writings which Barthes
writes about coincide in music with the stylistic mixture
determined by the evolution of the new technologies, a
partially fulfilled prophecy of Gould’s, so that, at the
beginning of the 21st century, we are witnessing a
stylistic nebula, the main symptom of which is the
dynamiting and the dispersal of axiological landmarks in
a postindustrial world in which artworks have become
mere “datastorage surfaces” (Bourriaud, 2007, 135)
meant for mp3 digital archiving and, through
reproduction, for common consumption.
According to Nicolas Bourriaud, we are experiencing a
full DJ culture. As early as the 1990s, with the
democratization of informatics and the advent of
sampling, this new cultural status dislocated from the
spotlight not only the consecrated model of the composer,
but also that of the instrumentalist, while the place of
these senders was taken by programmers and DJs. In this
new context, if we paraphrase Marshall McLuhan,
the message is the media, in other words, the new
technology has most of the times the tautological
shortcoming of self-reflection, a narcissistic form of
simulacrum which, as any hot form (McLuhan, 2007,
51-61) of the media, also involves seduction, inclusive
the seduction of the “author” no longer written with a
capital letter, an author who has been swallowed by the
message. As receiver of the message, the audience is also
seduced and saturated by the features of the channel that
comprises the technology which generates and broadcasts
the message, while they change the way they perceive the
new types of acoustic representation which, according to
McLuhan, belong to the category of hot media. On the
one hand, what is specific to a hot medium is the manner
in which it extends one single sense in “high definition”,
the “state of being well filled with data” (McLuhan,
2007, 51). For instance, we can easily notice – not only in
the case of pop concerts, but also of movie theatres,
theatrical performances, and symphonic concerts
removed from the conventional venue of the concert hall
and organized, following the model of pop concerts, in
arenas or public squares – how the way in which decibels
are exaggeratedly amplified has become a regular
practice specific to the new sender, a practice that agrees
to the new expectations of the large audience
oversaturated by decibels: on the street, in taxis, in
restaurants or bars.
Because of the way in which they simulate and
dissimulate reality, these new music technologies also
bring into discussion the problem of the concept of
simulacrum. In Jean Baudrillard’s view, the simulacrum
is a representation or a copy of reality which no longer
has an authentic or real original in its background
(Baudrillard, 2008). In other words, it is a simulation of
reality which becomes reality itself. The four
evolutionary stages of the signs towards the pure
simulacrum can also be encountered in the practice of
sampling.
sampling-ului.

In a first stage, the sound samples of reality are extracted
by recording, and they are faithful copies of reality. Then
these copies are amplified and distorted, giving the false
impression that they represent reality faithfully, while in
the third stage the original becomes irrelevant.
Eventually, the fourth stage, the stage of the pure
simulacrum, dissolves any clear distinction between copy
and reality, opening the artificial universe of hyperreality.

HIPERTEXT
The composer’s temptation to find correspondences,
connections between the significant units proposed by
Pirandello in the play’s text and significant units
belonging to the grammar of musical language gave life
to a concept relying on the principle of opposition, a
principle that actually underlies the entire play. We can
thus distinguish the opposition between: a “play that has
neither acts, nor scenes” and the classical stage pattern,
then the disjunctive opposition between the characters
searching for an author and the actors of the theatre
company or the conjunctive oppositions within the
multiple planes: Mother – Father or Leading Man –
Leading Lady, etc. We witness a multiplicity of the
semantic axes achieved by opposition in a game similar
to the up-down opposition relationship. The two poles are
conjunct if we consider the fact that down and up, by
their opposition, build an axis of verticality which, in its
turn, stands in a relationship of disjunct polarity with
another semantic axis of horizontality.
This game of bipolarity, characteristic of the simulacrum,
has a musical correspondence in the inversed opposition
relationship: live music – electronic music. Extracted
from an imaginary universe, Pirandello’ characters bring
with them a form of reality which can no longer be
changed, because nothing exists behind this reality, they
are pure simulacra. In the show’s music, the characters
seem to be placed in an analogy with virtual instruments
(VSTs), opposed to the real instruments which, in their
turn, represent the real existence of the actors.
Nevertheless, like in a mirror which reverses and thus
falsifies reality, the actors are represented on stage by
means of virtual sounds, and the characters by means of
instruments (violin, accordion, piano, bass guitar),
handled during the show by four of the six actors.
The director Anca Bradu opted for the double mirroring
of the six characters in six actors, while this type of
arithmetic is maintained in the musical concept as well,
starting from the morphological level of the harmonic
structures which rely on the augmented triad, and
continuing with the syntactic level where these structures
are combined.
semantică a orizontalității.
reprezintă existența reală a actorilor.
structuri.

This bizarre character – Madame Pace – to whom
Pirandello assigns no words, is nevertheless given the

the feminine character in the play is assigned by her to a

Acestui personaj bizar – Madama Pace – căruia
Pirandello nu îi atribuie nicio replică, Anca Bradu îi oferă

Figura 4. Cântecul Madamei Pace, En vano,

The Stepdaughter’s Song represents another example of a
simulacrum (see Figure 5). According to Pirandello’s
didascaly, the Stepdaughter should have “maliciously
sung Prends garde à Tchou-Tchin-Tchou by Dave
Stamper, set to fox-trot rhythm, or slow one-step by
Francis Salabert” (Pirandello, 2008, 36). This song was
replaced by a Hungarian song from the 1940s, “found”
on YouTube (in the manner of the ready-made objects)
and then transformed in terms of harmony that
accompanies the tango by adding the above-mentioned
structures of augmented triads’ structures. The choice
was influenced, of course, first of all by the fact that our
show was played in Odorheiu Secuiesc in Hungarian.
Though nowadays forgotten, this romance-tango called
Mindig az a perc a legszebb (“That minute is always the
most beautiful”) with lyrics by Mihály István and music
by Fényes Szabolcs seems to have been a great hit of the
time, sung by the famous Karády Katalin.
Figure 5. Stepdaughter’s Song, Mindig az a perc a
legszebb, bars 11-15, a fragment from the score meant
for live performance.
The entire endeavour connected to the choice of this song
is actually focused on the issue of the Author and of the
simulacrum that occults the original. Even if the
harmonic context, the orchestration, and the text are
transformed, an original still exists. The actors played
these two moments live, but the violinist is the only one
of the actors who has a music education, which
influenced the writing of the orchestration. In a
purposeful manner, each harmonic or melodic object was
created in isolation, similarly to the samples. The pianist
adopted those permutable harmonic structures, the actress
who played the accordion, as well as the guitar player, for
the first time, adopted those chromatic melodic
structures, so that this (premeditated) mirroring game
came to life already in the rehearsal stage, as each of the

Alegerea
Mindig az a perc a legszebb („Întotdeauna acel minut e
Figura 5. Cântecul Fetei vitrege, Mindig az a perc a
original. Actorii au interpretat live aceste două momente,
dintre actori doar violonistul având studii muzicale, ceea
Pianistul și-a însușit acele

actors’ instruments had its own electronic, virtual
version.
The technical specifications of the sampled version of
these instruments is depicted in Figure 6. The virtual
piano from Spitfire Audio, along with the bass guitar
from Ample Sound bring once again the minimalist
succession of augmented triads, which is as a matter of
fact the theme of the show. The Sicilian theme is played
by the solo violin (Spitfire Audio) and accompanied by
the accordion (Precisionsound) in mixtures of major
thirds – a projection of the augmented triad.
This accompaniment is doubled by sampled human voice
(Albion Solstice, Spitfire Audio) and harmonics effect in
the super-high register (Albion Tundra, Spitfire Audio).
The harp imitates the theme like an echo (Orchestral
Tools).

Tundra, Spitfire Audio). Harpa imită tema precum un
ecou (Orchestral Tools).
Figure 4. Sicilian Theme, bars 29-44, fragment from
the score played electronically by means of VSTs.
Figura 4. Tema siciliană, măsurile 29-44, fragment din
partitura redată electronic prin intermediul
VST-urilor.
The Sicilian theme is a phantasma similar to the
characters. Whereas the Stepdaughter’s Song and
En vano still preserved some connection to an original,
this Sicilian Theme, contrary to its title, has no
connection whatsoever to Sicily, it is a pure phantasy of
the author of the show’s music, introduced here as a form
of simulacrum. It is an imagined Sicilian music that
accompanies the Stepdaughter’s monologue, which
ritually prepares the Child for death, an expressive image
that speaks metaphorically about the death of purity.
From what has been said so far, we can infer that the
characters’ plane is mingled with that of the actors, just
like the two sound universes, the acoustic and the
electronic one, are mingled in their turn. This third plane
of the intermingling, of impurity, in which reality and
phantasm are involved in a conflict, describes the
capacity of the language to unravel or to hide “the deceit
of mutual understanding irremediably founded on the
empty abstraction of the words” (Pirandello, 2008, 16).
Thus, it is worthwhile mentioning here the moment of the
Actors’ cabaret, in which the conventional verbal
language is transposed into a Dadaist form of expression.
Technically speaking, the moment is particularly
complex, involving a particular musical rhythmical
rigour, as well as a bodily coordination required by the
choreography (Mălina Andrei).
The six actors are distributed in three pairs on the three
staffs (see Figure 7). The notes with the upward stems
represent the feminine characters, and the ones with
downward stems, the masculine ones. The attacks on
syllables are not sung, but uttered as lines, each line
having an intention in its background. In this way,
a dramatic situation is shaped in which monosyllabic
signifiers which, at first sight, seem to lack signification,
correspond to the signified intentions.
fantezie a autorului muzicii spectacolului, introdusă aici

This constructivist semiotic game relies on the syllabic
deconstruction of some words from the Hungarian text,
where the words represent common objects of stage
decor or qualities thereof, such as: canapé (coach),
paráván (screen), asztalka (small table), üveges (made of
glass), alacsony (small), boriték (envelope), sárgaplüss
(yellow velvet), mahagóniasztalka (small mahogany
table).
Figure 6. Combinatorial syllabic tables.
Figura 6. Careuri silabice combinatorii.
The words are initially grouped within combinatorial
tables of 6 syllables each, like the one above, in a
symbolical connection with the six actors who, due to
intermingling, become the duplicates of the six
characters. Several phonetic samples (an allusion to the
sampled sounds) are extracted from a form of linguistic
reality. When they are recontextualized syntactically,
pragmatically, and semantically, they also become
simulacra.
POST-TEXT
This article has highlighted the fact that a theatrical
performance appears as a complex message, in which a
multitude of codes are interwoven: literary-dramatic,
visual-scenographic, choreographic, musical, etc. Each
code represents a type of language or a particular
semiotics connected to the formulated intentions of the
director, which in this case is the basis of Pirandello’s
play. The music of the show can be understood and
construed as a particular semiotics which, in agreement
with its own grammar, can pursue the same themes
envisioned by scenographer Mălina Andrei, scenographer
Maria Miu, and director Anca Bradu, common themes
such as the metalinguistic search for identity and the
relationship between fiction and reality. The evolution of
music in the context of the new technologies and its
influence on the concept of author and performer is an
actual theme of thought worth debating from a critical
perspective as well.
The theories of Roland Barthes and Glenn Gould, which
bring up such ideas as the death of the author and the
death of the concert are confirmed by the horizons of the
DJ culture and the practice of sampling. Technology also
impacts today’s composers, who tend to express
themselves creatively in manners characteristic of DJs.

comune precum cea a căutării metalingvistice a identității

This is how the question comes to life whether behind the
musical message – which is the piece itself, as a
soundscape evolving in time and space – lies the
composer’s “voice”, or whether it is just the voice of the
“machine”, of the technology. Is the voice of the author a
simulacrum of the technology or does the technology
become a simulacrum of the author? Is the author
anywhere at all?
tehnologiei. Vocea autorului este un simulacru al
tehnologiei sau tehnologia devine un simulacru al
autorului? Unde mai este autorul?
