Beyond the Brothels: A Qualitative Study of the Destitute Female Sex Workers of Central Delhi Red Light Area2017 •
The term ‘sex workers’ refers to those involved in prostitution. This particular term is preferred as it does not have the derogatory, sexist connotation that the term ‘prostitute’ has. Belonging to a highly stigmatized profession with no financial and familial support forthcoming, the latter years of the lives of destitute female sex workers are spent in abject misery and poverty. Effort has been made to study the socio economic status and the ways adopted by these women, post active prostitution period, to support themselves and their families. This paper is based on the field study conducted in central Delhi red light area during August-September, 2016. Direct interviews with the respondents using questionnaires as well as participant observation techniques were used to collect the data. The study indicate that destitute female sex workers, once out of active prostitution, start working as domestic helpers, work with local voluntary organizations, or as helpers in brothels. The i...

Ancient practices and the modern trade: A case study of eight prostitutes in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India2018 •
Understanding humans across the globe seem to be simple on the surface level, however, it is quite difficult to understand the complexity of human nature every one exhibit. This depends on the person himself and the person with/ to whom he is communicating, situation, gender, feelings, place of exposure, lifestyle & culture, social exposure, the family upbringing which altogether makes a person think and react at that particular moment, resulting in action. However, inclined sexual instincts among both the genders get them connected through one or the other ways with mutual benefits, which is popularly known as an illicit or extramarital affair. While there is also a large section of women who irrespective of their sexual inclination serve people with their physical needs for mutually agreed money; has been a trade for survival to many of them. While these kinds of relationships between the two genders are not those emerged in the recent centuries, they have references of previous ages survived on the earth. India, since then has witnessed the social culture of an illicit affair between the two genders in various forms such as devadasi, extramarital affair with one or many, which later turned to prostitution. Though the prostitution and devadasi system in modern India is constitutionally banned, the devadasi tradition persists to be in the remote rural areas while prostitution has mushroomed across the country irrespective of their geographies. With a lot more of scholarly articles available, this study attempts to present few cases of women who were interviewed with an effort to understand the lifestyle, earnings, social background, reason to be in prostitution, the treatment and respect they receive and the challenges they encounter every day.

Urban Nightscape and Issues of Gender in Call Centre Industry in India2014 •
Women in India were always accepted in conventional profiles of nurses, teachers, secretaries or clerks. But today, against this phenomenon a large number of women are joining call centres. In a transnational call centre, work during day time is very rare and typically starts in late evening hours. This comes into contrast with traditional gender roles of women as mother, wife or care taker within the family. Indian society, with all its diversities, remains traditional patriarchal system. As women enter the global labor pool, particularly its nightscape, they experience negative gender based reactions like “what these women are doing in the night?” or “why are they out of their places for so late?” which are generally given to prostitutes or bar dancers. These kinds of reactions or comments provide a context for thinking about women’s access to night shift employment opportunities. Against this background I have made an attempt to study and analyse how does their family relate themselves to their work? How they negotiate their gendered identity and whether call centre industry in context of night shift employment is better suited for women professionals? Thus, it would be useful to look into the new image of women in India “breaking of stereotypes” and working in non-traditional sector of employment.
The institution of prostitution is the underhanded culmination of patriarchy. In the present context of continually increasing number of voices being raised for equality and respect for women, an analysis of the practices of prostitution of yore seem like the source of all the rampant sexism and discrimination against women. But one cannot deny that the demand for beauty and pleasure has existed since time immemorial. It is only since the establishment of the marital traditions that prostitution has come out in its essence and grew into the multi-faceted trade that it is today, along with all the socio-cultural and economic implications. Moreover, a superficial view of the history of this trade might not reveal the numerous layers of its constitution. The modern prostitute may have been forced into selling her body due to poverty or due to being tricked or lured into by crook, but Indian cultural history presents contrasting facts and opinions about the women who were then famous and even respected for their skills in this profession.

Client Desires and the Price of Seduction: Exploring the Relationship Between Independent Escorts’ Marketing and Rates2019 •
The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, no doubt is an improvisation over the Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Girls Act, 1956 but still a lot is to be achieved, particularly with reference to the abuse and social ostracism that sex-workers face despite the fact that prostitution per se is not illegal in India. Prostitutes cannot be seen as individuals with half-rights or no-rights; the Constitution of India guarantees them all rights as are available to all other citizens of the country; the crowning glory of them all being the “right to self-determination”. Because prostitution per se is not illegal in India, the contention or the moot point of argument should not be, whether or not to legalise activities of sex-workers, but as to how to regulate prostitution in India? Necessary fetters are required to be imposed on the exercise of police powers of the State, particularly in respect of raids that are carried out in the abode of the sex-workers, in the bid of terming them as ‘brothels’. Rehabilitation of sex-workers is too academic a proposition much because of the social hypocrisy we are surrounded with, and due to the attitude of social denial, we live in. Despite the fact that flesh trade is an $8.4 billion industry in India, hardly any affirmative steps have been taken to regulate prostitution and to improvise the living conditions of sex-workers in India. Prostitutes in India face “identity crises”, their existence is acknowledged only when brothels are raided and surveys are conducted by the Government and other agencies/authorities. The only good that can be done to uplift the prostitutes from their situation of crises is to acknowledge them as human beings, not only of ‘flesh’ but also of emotions; rights; privileges and liberties; and to make them realize that the Constitution of India shields them, protects them and embraces them, as it does to all other citizens of the country.
