Constable Leroy Rundle, an Indigenous officer, spoke to Jo Trilling on ABC Radio Perth about navigating the culture within the police.
His journey through the force features as part of the groundbreaking SBS docuseries Our Law and said one of the most important tools for him on the job is his voice.
"When I do go out and I see a First Nations or Aboriginal person, it's my mob out there at the end of the day and I want to help them," he said.
"One of the ways we go about it, we talk, we communicate."
He wants to see more Indigenous People signing up to become police officers.
"My family are very supportive of me... but other people might have seen me as a black sheep of the community," he said.
"Being in there now and knowing I can make a change and help people - it's way more satisfying than what could have happened if I didn't [become a police officer]."
