We all live under the same blue sky. Our sky blue scarves indicate our desire to live together in peace.
The “Border-free Blue Scarves” project was founded by grassroots activists in Afghanistan. According to them, the blue scarf “represents our collective wish as a human family to live without wars, to share our resources, and to take care of our earth under the same blue sky.” Following the lead of these Afghans, World BEYOND War encourages everyone to wear sky blue scarves as symbols of peace and support for ending all wars. Rev. Bob Holmes, who lives in Toronto, has steadily organized events featuring the blue scarves to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Participants in Camp Micah also join him, each summer, to distribute the blue scarves. Bob’s 2016 visit to Kabul gave young people there a chance to welcome him as their guest.
A statement adopted by the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement on the International Day of Peace September 21, 2024, begins:
Clean skies are proudly azure,
When bloodshed of inhuman war is ceased,
And peace endure.
So says the last poem written by Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko; he desired to end the first world war, but didn’t lived to see the Peace of Versailles. If he would, he might be disappointed by short-sighted plans of peaceful life written by victors who never seriously considered life without wars and because of that failed to build sustainable peace.
