Sunday June 11, 8pm–10pm
A concert devoted to and in memory of improviser, Deep Listener, composer, electronic music pioneer, writer, and creative thinker, Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016). A large ensemble will assemble at the Women’s Center for Creative work to undertake several of Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations including Extreme Slow Walk, Extreme Slow Song, and Tuning Meditation, among others. We invite the audience to listen/watch/observe as we present Oliveros’ work through practice of her Deep Listening.
This concert is part of the 13th Dog Star Orchestra. Both an ensemble and a once-a-year festival of experimental music, the Dog Star Orchestra was founded in 2005 by Michael Pisaro as a way of playing recent experimental music by young composers and classic pieces from the experimental tradition. Described as “messily exceptional” by the Los Angeles Times, Dog Star events happen throughout the Los Angeles area and feature offbeat performances in out-of-the-way places, alongside more traditional concert settings. This year’s festival dates are June 3-17. More information at dogstarorchestra.com.
