Jack-in-the-Box

Jack-in-the-Box, Jack Mead, first appears in Weapon X: The Draft - Sauron #1. Born an Australian aborigine mutant with telepathy and radar sense, his powers have a side effect where his body becomes petrified and brittle every time he uses them. He is taken into the Weapon X program, believing it to be a superhero team that could fix his mutant side effect, but he is ripped apart by his recruiter, Sauron, after a joke. He survives, becomes placed in a box, and he is utilized as a mind-reader during the admissions process for captured mutants incarcerated in the "Neverland" concentration camp.

Jackdaw

Jackdaw is a fictional character featured in the Marvel Comics universe. He was created by Dez Skinn, Steve Parkhouse, Paul Neary and John Stokes, and first appeared in The Incredible Hulk Weekly #57 (April 1980).

Jack-in-the-Box (short story)

Jack-in-the-Box is a short story by American author Ray Bradbury, first published as part of the 1947 short story collection Dark Carnival. It was later collected in the magazine Avon Fantasy Reader and the anthologies Interplanet7: Fantascienza, The Small Assassin, Ghostly and Ghastly, and The Stories of Ray Bradbury.

Story

Living apart from the outside world, Edwin shares residence with his mother in a vast secluded mansion. She raises him to be god; telling him that his father, the original god, was killed by beasts from outside the estate, and that if he ever extricates himself he too will die. The beautiful estate they share is described as a complete fantasy world created by Mother and embellished by Edwin. It was all he ever knew and thus he lacked any reason to question his mother's version.

Over the course of the story, Edwin explores his universe and the various secrets and mysteries it holds. Among them is a woman other than Mother who serves as his "teacher," who is actually his mother in disguise. No matter which rooms of his Universe he visits, Edwin uses their windows as portals to glimpse the world beyond. He is unsuccessful in this task until he discovers the door open to a forbidden room. Upon entry, he climbs the spiral staircase to the tower, and looks out the windows.

Jack in the Box (Satie)

Jack in the Box (sometimes seen as Jack-in-the-Box) is a work written by Erik Satie in 1899 for a pantomime-ballet (Satie called it a "clownerie", and also a "suite anglaise") to a scenario by the illustrator Jules Depaquit. Satie's intention was to score it also for orchestra. He gave it an English title because English phrases were considered fashionable in Parisian society at the time. However, after he wrote the piano score, he lost it some time after 1905. Satie believed it had gone missing on a bus and that it would never be found, but after his death it was found in his squalid apartment (some sources say it was hidden inside a notebook lodged down the back of his decrepit piano), along with the lost score for his marionette opera Genevieve de Brabant. Depaquit's scenario has not survived.

Sergei Diaghilev had approached Satie for ballet music in 1922 and again in 1924, but nothing was forthcoming either time. Satie died in July 1925, and in June 1926, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his birth, Jack in the Box was produced by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, with choreography by George Balanchine, settings by André Derain, and the music orchestrated by Satie's friend Darius Milhaud. The ballet received mainly negative comments: French critics called it "banal", while English critics decried it as "pert but hollow."

Containerization

Containerization is a system of intermodal freight transport using intermodal containers (also called shipping containers and ISO containers) made of weathering steel. The containers have standardized dimensions. They can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another—container ships, rail transport flatcars, and semi-trailer trucks—without being opened. The handling system is completely mechanized so that all handling is done with cranes and special forklift trucks. All containers are numbered and tracked using computerized systems.

The system, developed after World War II, dramatically reduced transport costs, supported the post-war boom in international trade, and was a major element in globalization. Containerization did away with the manual sorting of most shipments and the need for warehousing. It displaced many thousands of dock workers who formerly handled break bulk cargo. Containerization also reduced congestion in ports, significantly shortened shipping time and reduced losses from damage and theft.

The Box (U.S. TV channel)

The Box, originally named the Video Jukebox Network, was an American broadcast, cable and satellite television network that operated from 1985 to 2001. The network focused on music videos, which through a change in format in the early 1990s, were selected by viewer request via telephone; as such, unlike competing networks (such as MTV and VH1), the videos were not broadcast on a set rotation.

The network was distributed on cable and satellite providers, with additional carriage on over-the-air UHF television stations (mainly on low-power outlets); most of these stations, which later became affiliates of MTV2 following The Box's shutdown, have since been sold off as of 2012, while Viacom retains ownership of the other remaining former Box affiliates.

History

In the Box

In the Box was a 30-minute preschoolers' television program which aired in Australia on Network Ten at 8:30 am to 9:00 am, from Monday to Friday. It first aired on 21 December 1998. It was latterly hosted by Brett Annable, Tracey Fleming and Bop, their resident puppet. Previous hosts included Craig McMahon and Dominique McMahon.

The show featured varied content. However, there were certain events that would take place during each episode. These included a 'delivery', in which the hosts received a box of items to do an activity with, a visit from two different children each day, and the good-bye song. Some episodes had a particular theme such as baking or time travel.

During each episode, Brett, Tracey and Bop sang a variety of songs which appealed to the young target audience. These included Simon Says, Follow the Leader and Washy Washy.

Before the show was aired, it replaced the show The Music Shop. In the Box was replaced on 21 December 2006 by Puzzle Play.
