After a national search and final selection by Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Millard House II was revealed Wednesday as the next superintendent of the Prince George’s County School system. Current CEO Monica Goldson retires later this month.

"I will be coming into this school system working closely over the course of the next 90 days with Dr. Goldson to ensure that I listen and I learn," House said during his official introduction.

House left his job as Superintendent of the Houston Texas Independent School District last Friday. Houston’s Mayor tweeted that House improved the academic performance of the schools that needed attention.

The head of the Houston teacher’s union was unhappy he left.

“Out of the superintendents I have worked with in Houston he was by far the best," saidJackie Anderson, President of the Houston Federation of Teachers.

Two years ago when he accepted the Houston job, House described his educational philosophy this way; “I want to focus on ensuring we provide the equitable experiences that ensure our students are college and career ready that takes work that takes planning.”

In Prince George’s County, House will take over a district with some of the lowest performing schools in the state. As 7News reported last year, 0% of 8th graders were deemed meeting expectations in math. In Houston, he faced similar challenges and is credited with some success.

"We had 52 schools that were in IR which is improvement required status. He’s leaving and 40 of those schools have been lifted out of improvement required status," Anderson said. "I wish him the best of course and his family I just hate its not in Houston."
