Christoforos Schuff
- Actor
Christine is an actress, artist, producer, writer and musician known for humanitarian work and social engagement on issues related to human rights, equality, diversity, inclusion and social justice. Her own film includes independent film art productions as well as appearing as cameo in the series "Occupied" (playing herself at the time as an Orthodox priest), voice-over acting for feature film "Yohan: The Child Wander" and in the documentary "Med rett til å kapre" broadcast on NRK.
She was born in 1979 in California and raised in what she now knows to be a cult: "I was raised in my childhood in an extremely conservative, non-denominational, anti-government and evangelical cult who had their own Apostle. We literally called him "Apostle" and apparently had a direct line to God and healing powers. I was abused seriously physically and psychologically repeatedly at this time by my own parents, but much worse is the sexual abuse against my friends, which the pastors tried to hush down. One incident involved the step-father of a friend, the worship leader who had abused his own step-daughter, who when as he was called to a meeting to "resolve" this situation was shot by the actual father in our church. I remember the bulle holes well. Both went to prison: the father for attempted murder, the sexually abusive worship pastor for sexual abuse of a minor. He had been shot in the head and not died but remained paralyzed for the rest of his life. So now you know a little bit more about some of the things that have impacted my childhood in the midst of surviving abuse and a cult".
She has stated: "My art is very much influenced by a somewhat random chain of strong, some would say dramatic and extreme, experiences I have witnessed, been involved in or been the victim of. These have left strong impression and in turn lead to strong expressions".
Harstad Schuff relocated to Europe since 2000 and has become somewhat of a notable figure for "unorthodox" way of life and the often strong stand-points she takes on social and cultural issues, often expressing this artistically, through prose, performance or film art.
"Intersectionality" is an important term to have in mind when meeting Christine Harstad Schuff and her art. Her expressions are characterized by the crossroad between politics, gender, religion, exclusion, poverty, wealth, hierarchies and power - striving to crush the myths and narratives that we all too often allow to control our lives and attitudes towards both ourselves and others! She describes herself as: "a little bit of a lot in-between..."
