American astronomer and a science fiction writer. His most notable story is "A Subway Named Möbius" (1950), a fantasy based on mathematics and particularly topology.
He received a doctorate in astronomy from the University of Chicago in 1946; his undergrad was from the University of Arizona in 1940.[1] He is noted for the concept of Doppler tomography, which he presented at a symposium at Mount Wilson Observatory in 1958. He served as associate editor for the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics prior to 1966. From 1964 until 1967 he served as a councillor for the American Astronomical Society.
