Roberto Gerhard was born in Spain, the son of a German-Swiss father and a mother who hailed from Alsace. He studied with Arnold Schoenberg and the great cellist Pablo Casals was a close friend. Gerhard always considered himself first and foremost a Catalan; however, he was forced to flee Spain when it became clear that the forces of General Franco would be victorious in the Spanish Civil War. After a short stay in France, he settled permanently in England. His music was banned in Spain by Franco, although the ban was lifted after Franco's death (by which time Gerhard was himself dead).
