Though we are a diverse community with distinct perspectives, backgrounds, and expertise, we share a common vision for a better, more equitable future. We know that in order to tackle existential threats of today, we need to work together and start at home.

Get to know WashU and what drives us.

To make a new future, we need to know our past.

WashU was founded in 1853 by a group of St. Louisans to address the lack of higher education opportunities in the Midwest. The new university lacked funding from the state, a religious group, or a single wealthy donor, so WashU grew slowly at first. Today, we are proud of our global reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.

A history of excellence

WashU has been affiliated with 26 Nobel Laureates, many of whom did a significant portion of their award-winning work at the university.

Meet us in St. Louis.

WashU has six campuses in and around St. Louis. From the iconic Danforth Campus to the state-of-the-art Medical Campus to the rural Tyson Research Center, each with its own personality and amenities.

Our beloved hometown

WashU was founded by St. Louisans for St. Louisans, and we are forever proud of our hometown.
