Philadelphia Mural Arts program, a nonprofit that engages the community in public art projects throughout the city, offered its Albert M. Greenfield African American Iconic Images Collection this February. The trolley tour celebrated Black History Month guiding attendees throughout Philadelphia to see murals celebrating Black leaders and culture.
Tour guests on Sunday, March 21 came from all over the East Coast, including New York and North Carolina. One attendee hailed from Finland, and said he was on the tour to learn more about American multicultural history.
The mural subjects ranged from well-known Black leaders and political activists like Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King to Black musical groups like the Dixie Hummingbirds. Jerry Silverman, a tour guide with Mural Arts, said his goal for the tour is to spread awareness of lesser-known Black figures.
