The Bridge Street Pier was originally constructed as the main vehicle access point to Anna Maria Island in 1921, when the island was connected to Florida's mainland via a wooden bridge from the nearby city of Cortez. In 1967, when the island's current drawbridge entrance was opened, the remnants of the Bradenton Beach side of the bridge were converted into a fishing pier, which still stands today. Recently, the pier area has been revitalized as one of the city's most vibrant retail and dining districts, accessible via the free Island Trolley. Charming boutiques, eclectic art galleries, international cuisine dining options, and lively nightlife spots line the district, which is now referred to as the Historic Bridge Street District. Live music performances are showcased within the district nightly, while public art displays are presented at select times throughout the year.
