The first game after the tragic death of Tyrell Cameron was always going to be difficult to process for Franklin Parish players. That they had to move their game against Wossman up a day to accommodate Cameron’s wake just made everyone’s grief more immediate.

That was the stage upon which the most pure act of sportsmanship and good will we’ve seen in the still nascent season was authored on Thursday night. Before Franklin Parish and Wossman faced off, Franklin Parish entered the field arm-in-arm with their counterparts from Sterlington, the team they faced off against in the game featuring Cameron’s death, a striking sign of solidarity from two Louisiana teams thinking about the one player who wasn’t with them that night.

The arm-in-arm walk-out, which you see in the Tweet above, was part of a handful of pregame activities designed to honor Cameron’s memory. The teams also released red, white and blue balloons in an on-field memorial that NBC affiliate KTVE reporter Chris Demirdjian described as “emotional.”

The scoreboard displayed a 48-48 score with 48 seconds left (Cameron wore No. 48) as the teams went through warmups. The teams, flanked by Cameron’s family, cheerleaders, fans and a contingent from the Sterlington football team – Franklin Parish’s opponent the night of Cameron’s fatal injury – came together for prayer and a balloon release.

That may have been an extreme understatement. While Woosman won the team’s face-off, 43-18, the images that all will remember have little to do with football and much more to do with general humanity.
