Week #26: Knowledge Week

Date: 1–7 July 2024

  • Curator: Anna Budzanowska, PhD (City of Katowice)
  • Producer: Mirosław Rusecki

Description of the week

Week #26 of 50 Weeks in the City of Science is the Knowledge Week. The event is part of the European City of Science programme, which will last throughout 2024.

Knowledge. Each of us can say that we understand it in our own way. Someone may define it as life experience, but a scientist will say that it is information collected during research. Knowledge can be scientific, practical, theoretical, empirical and intuitive.

Knowledge allows us to understand the world and the reality in which we function. Thanks to it, we make conscious decisions and solve problems. It is the foundation of progress and change in every field of life: from science to art and philosophy.

Knowledge is the foundation, but it is subject to change. What we consider certain and indisputable today may be questioned over time and supplemented with new breakthrough discoveries.

We have seen how important reliable, proven knowledge is during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to knowledge, we could fight disinformation, it was our weapon against fake news. Knowledge allowed us to develop vaccine research and provide the public with reliable information about the threat. In the current international situation, knowledge is the basis for effective defense and action during the threat of conflict escalation. Knowledge allows you to develop appropriate strategies and use advanced technologies and skills (analysis of military and intelligence data).
