Australian institutes and academies of sport (AIAs) have been in existence for more that two deca... more Australian institutes and academies of sport (AIAs) have been in existence for more that two decades. The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) is one such AIA and given that organisations such as the QAS employ significant numbers of full-time performance sport coaches, it and AIAs like it, may be accurately characterised as a genuine workplace. As such, it may be entirely appropriate, or perhaps even most desirable, to investigate the ways these coaches learn their work through the application of a workplace learning framework. This paper will argue that an understanding of the interaction between what the workplace (QAS) affords the individual and the personal agency of the individual (high performance sports coaches), is important for structuring work environments that facilitate meaningful learning. Throughout this paper, reference will be made to a recently completed study examining what high performance sport coaches within the QAS know and how they have come to know.
In the past decade there has been an increasing recognition of sports coaching as a complex endea... more In the past decade there has been an increasing recognition of sports coaching as a complex endeavour and associated with this, there has been greater attention given to the development of these practitioners at all levels. The body of research dealing with the professional development of sports coaches was reviewed through literature searches using several databases (ERIC. Sociological Abstracts, ProQuest Digital Dissertations, PsyclNFO, SPORTDiscus, and Sport Scan). Emerging categories included: (a) Formal coach accreditation and certification schemes (mostly large-scale or national focus); (b) Distinct coach education endeavours (such as workshops or tertiary programs not specifically attached to certification); (c) Broader reviews of coach development sources (identifying coach education as one of many sources of coach learning); and (d) Whole-of-field papers (attempting to capture or address issues across the entire field). Review limitations and recommendations for the field are also presented.

Yet the phrase ‘holistic coaching’ is mired in ambiguity and has the potential to become meaningless. The aims of this article are to explore the relationship between holism, humanistic psychology, humanism and sports coaching, and to pose some challenges, which could support the field to move beyond the influence of humanistic psychology.

Das College of Sport Psychologists – als australisches Äquivalent zur Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Sportpsychologie – hat formelle Beziehungen zur Australian Psychological Society und zu Sports Medicine Australia. Die Verbindungen zwischen angewandter Forschung, beruflicher Praxis und Zusammenarbeit mit Athleten und Trainern entwickeln sich ständig weiter; gleichermaßen wachsen der Respekt und die Anerkennung für Praktiker und Lehrende innerhalb des Berufszweiges. Dieser Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die Schwerpunkte der sportpsychologischen Forschung, Praxis und Ausbildung in Australien und benennt Unterschiede zum deutschen Ausbildungssystem.

The World Junior Championships in Athletics (WJC), for athletes aged under 20 years, were introdu... more The World Junior Championships in Athletics (WJC), for athletes aged under 20 years, were introduced in 1986 with objectives including: retention, performance improvement, and being a pathway to elite senior performance. The authors documented the lived experiences of a group of participating athletes from New Zealand in order to determine the role the WJC played in their athletics career and whether they continue to invest their time and resources in athletics and the nature of that investment. Twelve New Zealand athletes were interviewed before and after competing at the 2010 WJC. The data from the semi-structured interviews were examined using hierarchical content analysis. Athletes viewed the WJC as a key point of reference and important in the decision-making process as to whether they continue to invest their time and resources in athletics and the nature of that investment. The development of burnout in the vocation of sports coaching is a process that can take months o... more The development of burnout in the vocation of sports coaching is a process that can take months or even years. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of longitudinal examination of coaches’ burnout, stress, and recovery. The present study investigated burnout, stress, and recovery of full and part-time coaches to examine possible changes during the course of the season. Twenty-five full-time and 45 part-time active German coaches of different sports and competition levels completed the German coaches’ version of the MBI and the RESTQ for Coaches at three time points. Inferential statistical analysis revealed significant changes of full-time coaches’ stress and recovery scores over the course of the season. Moreover, the work hours per week were significantly higher at the end of the season. Post hoc analysis revealed that full-time coaches whose values of perceived success decreased over the season showed increased emotional stress and decreased recovery values. The survey assessed characteristics of particpating children and parents, parental attitudes to competition, parenting practices, parental emotional and behaviours reactions to parenting situations in junior sport (before, during and after sport). The report provided a summary of survey findings and implications for the NRL.
