Dans le cadre des études africaines, Angola reste un territoire de rare recherche - un vide scientifique justifiée par l'histoire fragile du pays. En effet, le conflit angolais a commencé dans les années 60 et a terminé seulement en 2002. Le conflit a commencé encore sous le gouvernement colonial portugais, et sʼest étendu après l'indépendance en 1975, opposant les deux grands partis - le MPLA (Mouvement Populaire pour la Libération de l'Angola) et l'UNITA (Union Nationale pour l'Indépendance Totale de l'Angola). Comme résultat de cette guerre interminable, ont compte un grand nombre de morts, la destruction massive des infrastructures dans le pays, et ont vérifie quʼun tiers de la population d'Angola sʼest déplacée. Le déplacement à l'intérieur du pays et au-delà des frontières nationales, a changé la notion de frontière entre lʼAngola et la Zambie. Ainsi, avant les conflits la ligne imaginaire qui sépare les deux pays était relativement perméable; seulement au cours de la guerre la ligne a pris la dimension de frontière physique, respectant la configuration territoriale coloniale.
Comme résultat dʼun travail de camp réalisé dans la frontière Angola-Zambie et dans le Camp de Réfugiés de Meheba, où ont été établis des contacts avec des angolais et des zambiens, il a été possible de comprendre certains mécanismes qui ont changé la relation et la perception de la frontière en question.
Avant la guerre de l'indépendance, la frontière était pratiquement inexistante: des différents groupes habitaient dans un espace définit par des liens tribaux et/ou des flux fréquents de populations. Au début du conflit, les populations déplacées ont cherché refuge près de leurs parents et/ou près de groupes ethniques voisins à travers la frontière. Cependant, au cours du temps, les mécanismes de la délimitation des frontières de toutes sortes se trouvent renforcés. Ce fait est lié à des nombreux facteurs tels que: l'entrée dans le territoire zambien sporadique par les différentes factions armées en conflit; l'ampleur de la violence et le nombre croissant de réfugiés; les mines terrestres dans la frontière, ou la croissance du trafic des pierres précieuses et d'autres biens. C'est ainsi que la frontière entre les deux territoires acquiert une dimension physique très évidente. En plus de cette série de raisons, encore aujourd'hui, persiste la croyance que le «fantôme» de l'ancien leader de l'UNITA - Jonas Savimbi, continue errant dans la région du Moxico - la zone où il a été tué par le MPLA.
Ainsi, lʼapproche se centrera sur comment la perception et la relation avec la frontière Angola-Zambie a évolué à travers le temps jusqu'à aujourd'hui, et comment elle a influencé la construction de l'état-nation angolais post-coloniale.

A relative freedom with respect to the building process, urban deregulation, coupled with scarce resources, create a more unique, democratic and sustainable aesthetic in the sovereign informal city.

When discussing the contemporary city and its visually-driven society, the importance and role of aesthetics is often disregarded.
Over time, security and urbanist agendas have organized the city, resulting in progressive standardization of the urban fabric and its spaces.This standardization has allowed various improvements including in mobility, safety, and reduced manufacturing time and cost. However, it has had a great impact in terms of social control by shaping individual and collective relationships and perceptions. Every urban element has become engaged to an aim-given aesthetic which informs its content and purpose. Through stereotyped aesthetic principles one can depict spatially-located social groups, understand the public/private status of spaces, and draw borders between the formal and informal city. Urban policies and laws,alongside extreme design, have withdrawn individual expression and appropriation by limiting the range of aesthetic, let alone physical, possibilities.
If this is true regarding the formal city, deregulation, fortuitousness and scarce resources, compose an entirely different context within the informal realm. In fact unofficial sovereignty allows local (popular) culture to emerge. This is shown by the broad architectural and material solutions found throughout these frugal cities, where aesthetics meets function.
I will argue that through new aesthetic conceptions and liberties, some already present in the informal city, we can re-interrogate our habitat –the city.Acknowledging scarce planetary resources and huge (urban) population growth and inequalities, aesthetics are an interesting gateway to rethink relationships with space and “place”,with politics and policies,with the human and natural environment, and with society as whole.
