Greece is probably the worst affected country, having lost close to a third of its economic productivity, and being still under the imposition of harsh austerity measures. Individual mental health has suffered, as suicide, depression and anxiety, among others, substantially rose during the crisis. Despite efforts to protect mental health systems, they were severely and persistently affected, and evidence suggests that eventually they started failing to meet the health needs of the population. In this narrative review we sought to explore the reasons for this persistent detrimental effect. We identified several evidence-based examples of resonating factors that could help explain why the effects of the crisis are so persistent. We suggest that mental health systems need additional support and investment to overcome the resonating effects of the crisis and to meet the p...

The percentage of people with mental retardation in the general population is estimated at about ... more The percentage of people with mental retardation in the general population is estimated at about 2.3%, with adolescence (15-20 years) constituting the development period during which a peak in rates of mental retardation is observed. The increased prevalence of adolescence may be explained from the fact that the specified requirements of the school initially, and society later, inevitably lead to comparative evaluation of the teen with mental retardation in relation to peers, thus making mental retardation more apparent. Adolescents with mental retardation face a number of physical and psychological needs which are not often distinguishable and as a consequence undergo the deterioration of their already burdened quality of life. In particular, mental health problems occur 3 to 4 times more often in adolescents with mental retardation compared with adolescents of the general population. This review presents the most recent epidemiological findings regarding the correlation between be...

Given the recent events in Ukraine with millions on the flight, this scoping policy editorial aims to help guide mental health support for young victims of war through an overview of the direct and indirect burden of war on child mental health. We highlight multilevel, need-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches to regaining and sustaining outer and inner security after exposure to the trauma of war. The impact of war on children is tremendous and pervasive, with multiple implications, including immediate stress-responses, increased risk for specific mental disorders, distress from forced separation from parents, and fear for personal and family’s safety. Thus, the experiences that children have to endure during and as consequence...

The etiology of gambling disorder is complex and multifaceted as it is governed by multiple and interrelated factors. In this context and in light of the pervasive financial crisis in Greece, we conducted a study in order to explore adolescents' gambling involvement in Athens region and also to identify the socio-economic characteristics of adolescents who have engaged into gambling activities. Students were recruited from a sample of schools in Athens area. For the assessment of gambling involvement in adolescents, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV Multiple Response Adapted for Juveniles Questionnaire (DSM-IV-MR-J) was administered. Additional self-constructed questions enquired about students' socio-demographic and economic characteristics. Our results indicate that adolescents that had problem with gambling or had at least o...

Up to 20% of children and adolescents across the world suffer from a disabling mental illness in ... more Up to 20% of children and adolescents across the world suffer from a disabling mental illness in any given year and almost a third will experience a mental disorder at some point during their life [1]. Such mental disorders in childhood can have a negative impact on the emotional development of the individual [2]. There is growing awareness of health inequalities between European countries and between population groups within European countries [3]. Children and adolescents from less advantaged socioeconomic groups are more vulnerable to mental health problems and mental health problems put those children at the higher risk of mental and physical health problems in adulthood, as well as increased likelihood of unemployment, contact with law enforcement agencies, and need for disability support [4, 5]. Factors leading to unequal access to mental health services are ethnicity [6], family situation [7], socioeconomic status [8], the number of trained child and adolescent mental health ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the success rate of dyslexic students in the university entrance examinations. Our hypothesis was, firstly, that these students will have the same success rate as other students and secondly, that they will mainly enter schools of science or technology. Our sample consisted of 420 dyslexic students who had sat for university entrance exams in 2006. Data was collected anonymously from Ministry of Education's files and consisted of the number of dyslexic students who were examined, their success rate, their choice of school and their grade. This data was derived from three examination centres in Athens and from five examination centres in an equal number of large provincial towns. Results showed that the succe...

These children exhibit a significant impairment in speech and language development, which cannot be justified by hearing impairment, cognitive impairment, neuromuscular or orofacial disorders, as well as by emotional or environmental factors. Specific developmental disorders of speech and language are often comorbid with other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as motor coordination disorder and ADHD. These disorders are usually detected in early childhood and commonly treated during the preschool and school years. Despite this fact clinical and empirical evidence suggest that often these disorders persist beyond the school years, even though the symptomatology may be differentiated. In this literature review, we address the question of whether specific developmental language disorders are encountered on...

However, the specific association of behavioural and attention factors with learning disorders is not clear. The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between hyperactivity, inattentionand reading ability in a non-referred sample in Greece. Data were collected from 201 pupils attending second grade in public school in an Athens district. The CBCL was administrated to parents in order to evaluate behavioural disorders, inattention and hyperactivity. Teachers completedthe CBCL and the Conner's scale. Reading ability was assessed by a reading test appropriate for second grade. Attention difficulties reported by the teacher were associated with lower readingskills, but hyperactivity and behaviour disorders were not. Correlations of reading skills with CBCL scores were very low, especially through parental ratings. Girls showed better reading skills and less"hyperactivity" than boys. ...

A review of the existing evidence will be carried out in this presentation. The importance of poverty, unemployment and debt will be underlined and the trans-generational effect of economic crises on children will be stressed. The conclusions are the following: Depression, especially in its self-destructive clinical expression is one of the major psychopathological conditions that are linked with economic crises. However, it is important to differentiate between understandable sadness, a potentially productive response to economic crises and the dysfunctional response represented by depression. Screening for depression and suicidal tendencies during periods of economic crises as a routine psychiatric prevention strategy is recommended. In view of the association of suicidal potential with unemployment, active labor market and family support programs are necessary. The cost/effectiveness of mental health provision programs (investing in mental health) especially during periods of economic crises should be demonstrated and highlighted. Highlighting the above and advocating for the establishment of cost-effective active labor market programs, rehabilitation and family support programs are recommended.

At first centred on Athens, quickly spread across the whole of Greece. The spark was the murder in cold blood of a 15-year-old student by a member of the police force. The extent of the phenomenon throughout the country, the massive, almost universal, participation of adolescents (students) and youths (university students, young working people) as well as the intensity and form of reactions, shaped a situation which had the characteristics of a spontaneous youth uprising. In this paper we try to understand the essence of these events from a psychodynamic perspective. This is why we examine issues such as the characteristics of adolescence, the adolescent and the family, the adolescent and the peer group, the adolescent and society, and finally, acting out as a form of communication. We conclude that the blurring of family boundaries, the weakening of social values, the predominance of the ideology of ind...
