In response to the spread of the Reformation in Italy and the interest aroused by the religions debate at all levels of society, Rome set Itself the fundamental goal of rendering the patrimonium fidei inaccessible to the mass of believers. The Inquisition and the Index of forbidden books progressively took back the ground won by the common tongue, thanks to which laymen, clergy and religions orders had been able to compensate for the growing ignorance of Latin. Resolved to eradicate two principles on which the Protestants had founded their spiritual renovation –knowledge of the Scriptures and intelligibility of religions practices– the Church forbade not only reading of the Bible and of devotional texts with biblical content, but also the writing of biblical commentaries and Works of theology and religions controversy in Italian. In this way it was eventually successful in preventing Italians front partaking of a conscious experience of faith and a personal means to a knowledge of God, thus producing a number of peculiarities in the nation’s religions, moral and civil identity. The essay reconstructs the stages of a pedagogical project designed to achieve a more deeply-penetrating control over the minds and consciences of the faithful, reducing them to the role of eternal children

I am trying to investigate certain aspects of the control on production and circulation of books ... more I am trying to investigate certain aspects of the control on production and circulation of books between the foundation of the Congregation of the Inquisition and the last years of Clement VIII’s pontificate, which is a crucial period for the setting up of a centralized system of censorship. The necessity for Rome to deploy efficient instruments and means to implement the norms of the Index and execute instructions from the center of command clashes with a reluctant Inquisition determined to maintain a firm grip in the field of censorship through its courts. Such a determination, emerging in the role bestowed upon bishops and inquisitors in the first three Roman Indexes, was at the start of conflicts with the Congregation of Index and the papacy and of an incidence of censorship that proved very different in the Italian peninsula
