In 1848, entrepreneur James Lick brought 600 pounds of chocolate to San Francisco. After selling out quickly, he encouraged his friend, Domingo Ghirardelli, a confectioner from Peru, to move to San Francisco and start his own chocolate company, which became the famous Ghirardelli brand.

The Hershey Ice Cream Company and Hershey Chocolate Company are entirely separate, despite both being founded in Lancaster County in 1894 by unrelated men named Hershey. This has led to occasional legal disputes but no corporate connection.
