Dr. Carroy (Cuf) Ferguson has a Ph.D. in Psychology from Boston College. He has been President or Co-President of the Association for Humanistic Psychology for many years, making history in 2006 as the first African American and first person of color to be President of this national Association since its founding in 1962 by world-renown psychologists in the field like Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. He is a tenured Full Professor and former Dean, College of Public and Community Service at University of Massachusetts-Boston. He currently serves as Human Services Program Director and as the Human Service program’s first Human Service Internship Coordinator, is a co-founder of two visionary organizations (Interculture, Inc. and Associates in Human Understanding), is a co-founder of Massachusetts’ historic Commonwealth Diversity Fellows Program, has been a clinical practitioner for over thirty-five years, is a member of a number of boards, is a human relations, multicultural, and organizational development consultant, and workshop facilitator, is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and is a published author of books, articles, and other writings. Citizens in the United States and people in the world, therefore, are engaged in a variety of political dramas. It is fair to say that in the United States and globally, the current political climate is very divisive. In the United States and globally, humanity is at an inflection point in the evolution of its consciousness at individual and collective levels. Out of fear, some people are looking backward to an illusionary past and call themselves ‘conservatives’ and some people are looking forward to a potentiated probable future and call themselves ‘progressives.’…This inflection point is mirrored in part via the ‘gaslighting’ tactics used by many politicians to con people into giving away their power to them as they play their divisive political games. …”

On the third Monday of January each year, we pause to honor and give respect to Dr. Martin Luther... more On the third Monday of January each year, we pause to honor and give respect to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his transformative social justice messages and actions in service to the United States and the world. I want to take this opportunity to share some excerpts from one of Dr. King’s messages to psychologists, and by implication to the world. The message was delivered on September 1, 1967, to the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues at the American Psychological Association Convention. With a plethora of injustices continuing to rage in the world today (e.g., wars in Gaza, Ukraine, Yemen), and with inhumane acts of insensitivity and cruelty continuing to be exhibited in a divisive and polarized U.S. society (e.g., voter suppression acts; insensitivity toward women’s reproductive rights & body sovereignty; an ideological and politicized SCOTUS) and across the planet (e.g., gang violence in Haiti; conflicts in Cabina, Ethiopia, Syria, Kivu, Rojava, Papua, and between the Houthi and Saudi Arabians, Nagorno and Karabakh), it seems imperative that Dr. King’s timeless message be revisited and lifted up at this inflection point for humanity.

Culture provides us with a set of assumptions and values about ourselves, and the world around us... more Culture provides us with a set of assumptions and values about ourselves, and the world around us. Culture influences how we think and feel and what we do. Each of us carries these assumptions and values in our mind and they serve as the context within which we relate to ourselves, to others, and to the physical and spiritual environment. Most people are unaware of their cultural assumptions and assume that their own cultural assumptions about the nature of humanity and the world are right and natural. While culture is to be appreciated and celebrated, it also can be somewhat hypnotic, with the result of internalizing what may be unquestioned, unexamined, self-limiting, and addictive cultural scripts.

On the planet, there is a need to heal race-linked wounds, particularly anti-black race-linked wo... more On the planet, there is a need to heal race-linked wounds, particularly anti-black race-linked wounds that stem from systemic racism. It is well known and chronicled that anti-black race-linked wounds are embedded in cultural scripts and societal practices and have been inflicted historically on enslaved people of African descent in the United States, as well as on darker complexion people globally. More specifically, Black men more often have been the targets for many of the inhumane acts exhibited by those who consciously or unconsciously created and/or maintain systemic racism. Systemic racism, grounded in patriarchy (paternalistic), authoritarian (autocratic), and colonial attitudes, mirrors numerous and harmful institutional "shackles" that Black men have had to deal with and overcome over the years. Indeed, "internalized" patriarchy (paternalistic), authoritarian (autocratic), and colonial attitudes may "infect" the minds and the Collective Consciousness of anyone on the planet, even transcending skin color per se, as witnessed by the murder of Tyre Nichols on January 7, 2023.

Toward that end, I was asked by the President of Ubiquity University, Jim Garrison, to put together a five-part series of panel discussions for an ongoing virtual global summit, called Humanity Rising: A Global Solutions Summit. I titled the five-part series "Humanity's Reckoning With Its Race-Linked Wounds: Healing and Repair At Individual and Collective Levels." These panel discussions took place in April 2022.
