Published in Nature Portfolio, a three-and-a-half-year project involving 30 scientists has found that even if it is possible to reverse the rise in global temperatures, many of the climate damages will be irreversible. Professor Rachel Warren from Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and our School of Environmental Sciences explains: “Even after an overshoot of global temperatures, the world does not return to where it started, even if the global temperature does. There would be irreversible damage to ecosystems, even if it were possible to reduce temperatures after an ‘overshoot’ scenario.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/exJ8_p35 Climate UEA #ClimateChangeResearch #AcademicExpert #ScientificStudy #ThisIsUEA

🎥 Pop along to Jarrolds this weekend to see a pop-up exhibition about the East Anglian Film Archive at the Stationary Store. The East Anglian Film Archive is part of University of East Anglia's collections and the accredited film archive for the East of England region. The display includes the newly restored film 'Norwich Scenes 1938 - 1950' by John Henry Willis, which captures important civic events such as a visit to the city by King George VI and the opening of the Geoffrey Colman Memorial Wing at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, as well as the everyday lives of people living in the city. Also on show is a selection of stills from films in the collection and historic equipment that belonged to local filmmaker Joyce Allingham. The display has been organised by the East Anglian Film Archive in collaboration with CreativeUEA. #Norwich #UEAResearch #ArchiveFilms

New research published in a Sage Journal has found that subtle or covert forms of abuse are just as, if not more damaging, than the well-known forms of physical and verbal abuse. Lead author Ms. Rosemary Parkinson of our School of Health Sciences calls for more research: “This form of abuse has the potential to be one of the most damaging of all abuses, and there are no studies solely exploring this kind of abuse. It shows that we know very little about this type of abuse that is damaging victims and may be pervasive.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/e_WV5nDm #TherapyResearch #PsychologyResearch #AcademicExpert #ThisIsUEA #AbuseStudy

Did you know plants struggle to grow under stressful conditions? 🌿 New research from UEA's School of Biological Sciences, School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology and Ocean University of China finds a plant gene that helps plants to grow under stressful conditions, which could help produce more sustainable crops in the face of climate change. Lead author, Dr Ben Miller said: “This discovery provides fundamental understanding about how plants tolerate stress and offers promising avenues for improving the crops tolerance to salinity and drought, which is important for enhancing sustainability in the face of global climate change.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/ewWVfQBe The research was funded by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council and BBSRC ClimateUEA #BiologyResearch #AcademicExpert #PlantResearch #ClimateChange

Can being outside in nature really improve your mindfulness? 🐦🌳 Dr Natalia Zielonka explores this in her new research, finding that outdoor businesses and venues can benefit from boosting biodiversity, whilst showcasing the importance of time spent in nature: "Our findings demonstrate how delivering bird conservation in vineyards could enhance our experience of spending time in nature, eliciting positive emotions and benefitting our wellbeing." #ThisIsUEA #Wellbeing #NatureSoundscapes #Biodiversity 👇👇
Did you know that birdsong can improve mindfulness? 🐦🎶 In a recent study published in British Ecological Society's People and Nature Journal, Dr Natalia Zielonka from our School of Biological Sciences explores how hiding speakers in vineyards to mimic louder, more diverse bird soundscapes can help businesses improve their customers' experience by investing in the biodiversity of their sites. Dr Zielonka said: “The research demonstrates that soundscapes composed of richer birdsong helps us have a mindful experience of nature, which benefits our wellbeing, and it highlights the importance of sound in nature engagement. It is more important than ever to conserve biodiversity and to create new and accessible opportunities to experience nature.” Head to our website to read the full story: https://bit.ly/4dFNDSu #AcademicExpert #BirdSoundscapes #VineyardTours #BiodiversityResearch #NatureStudy #ResearcherLife

Kemi Badenoch recently stated that maternity pay in the UK is “excessive”. Dr Gemma Mitchell explores what new mothers are entitled to in a recent The Conversation UK piece. 👩👦 Dr Mitchell from UEA Law School said: “Mrs. Badenoch’s comments suggest that UK maternity pay is too generous. But in contrast to other European and OECD countries, the UK has some of the least generous leave and pay.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/dHc52dcW #LawResearch #UKLaw #AcademicExpert #MaternityPay #LawUpdates

The London Standard recently released an AI-generated review in the voice of late art critic, Brian Sewell. In her recent The Conversation UK article, Dr Maria Serban of the School of Politics, Philosophy and Area Studies explores what this means for human jobs and if AI poses a philosophical threat. 👩💻 Dr Serban said: “Critics have scoffed at the AI-written review, but this view obscures a greater realisation of the philosophical threat this technology poses – the reduction of the human to the machine.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/eyFTXTNt #ArtificialIntelligence #AIWriter #PhilosophyStudies #AIOrHuman #AcademicExpert #ResearcherLife #ThisIsUEA

New research in collaboration with the International Fugitive Emissions Abatement Association finds that methane emissions from slurry stores may be up to five times greater than previously thought. 🚜 Professor Neil Ward of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and the School of Environmental Sciences said: “If emissions are significantly under-estimated, this means that priorities around mitigation options might be distorted. This research represents an urgent call for action to better understand methane emissions.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/eeJqgArR Or to learn more directly from Professor Neil Ward: https://lnkd.in/ehZUt4gR ClimateUEA #ThisIsUEA #ClimateResearch #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalResearch #AcademicExpert

New climate research published in Frontiers in Science argues that the effects of climate change are not distant scenarios, they are unfolding now. 🌳🌍 Regional climate data from the research warns of emerging climate signals, with researchers highlighting the increasing monsoons and polar precipitation shifts. Co-author, Professor Manoj Joshi from the School of Environmental Sciences said: “Understanding the mechanisms for the ongoing amplified warming over land compared to ocean is an important part of the climate change picture.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/gKtXwvn9 ClimateUEA #ThisIsUEA #ClimateChange #AcademicExpert #ClimateResearch #UniversityResearch
