Acorn is an ambitious programme designed to tackle climate change by dealing with industrial CO2 emissions and other ‘hard to decarbonise’ sectors. By making use of oil and gas pipelines that are already in place, offshore geology that is ideal for permanently storing carbon dioxide (CO2), and a region that is embracing hydrogen as a fuel of the future, this project is a really important catalyst for the next phase of the UK’s journey to Net Zero.

The team are enjoying their time #Lab24! Lots of positive, engaging and interesting conversations on #CCUS and how Acorn, as part of the Scottish Cluster, can facilitate rapid decarbonisation of both Scotland and the UK’s economy. A particular highlight so far was the visits to the Carbon Capture and Storage Association stand, where it was encouraging to hear from Rt Hon Rachel Reeves how she recognises the enormous potential for CCUS, and from Ed Miliband who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Track-1 and Track-2, specifically mentioning Acorn as a project he is a fan of. 🌞 On Tuesday, July 9th, the Wild About Aden festival at Aden Country Park was a hit, featuring dinosaurs, sea monsters, and an asteroid-filled adventure with the Rock Doctor's geological journey. 🌍 This action-packed event took families on a 2.8km trek through 145 million years of geological history, highlighting how rocks beneath the North Sea seabed could help Britain’s top Geo-Scientists (Rock Doctors) address the global climate challenge. 🌊 Participants explored geological time with an expert from the Acorn CO2 transport and storage project, engaging in 'RockStar Challenges,' learning fascinating facts, and handling genuine rock and fossil samples. 🪨 The journey began 145 million years ago in the Kimmeridge Clay layer, just below the Acorn CO2 storage site. The Acorn and Scottish Cluster partners met with the First Minister, John Swinney yesterday at the St Fergus gas terminal to discuss the project and opportunities to work together to drive the Scottish Cluster to delivery. Acorn aims to provide a CO₂ transport and permanent storage solution for a diverse range of industrial CO₂ capture projects across Scotland and beyond, enabling the safe transport of CO₂ to the northeast where it can be safely and permanently stored under the North Sea. Commenting on The Scottish Government's announcement of new funding support for National Gas’s SCO2TConnect project, Nic Braley from Acorn said: “The Scottish Cluster, with Acorn at its core, and the UK and Scottish governments can collectively make a major contribution to UK net zero commitments, supporting ambitions for clean energy, green prosperity and value for money. “We look forward to working with both governments to make the Scottish Cluster a reality." #NetZero #CCS #SustainableScotland

Recently published: an Economic Impact Assessment report, highlighting how The Scottish Cluster can significantly benefit the economy and environment. Speaking on the publication of the report, our General Manager, Nic Braley, said: “Through the lens of economic impact, industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) emerges not only as an environmental necessity, but as a cost-effective and flexible solution that allows UK industry to remain competitive. “The Scottish Cluster brings together The Acorn Project, National Gas Transmission’s SCO2T Connect Project (a pipeline repurposing project which links the Central Belt with North-East Scotland) and a variety of industrial, power, hydrogen, bioenergy and waste-to-energy businesses, to reach a collective aim of capturing up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030 – and in doing so realising massive economic benefits for Scotland and the UK. “Our new report highlights how together these transformative projects could be a national economic success story by creating up to 10,800 development and construction jobs, 4,700 long-term, highly skilled jobs, diversifying supply chain opportunities, and supporting Scotland’s energy transition – all whilst securing the future of our energy-intensive industries, and so safeguarding further tens of thousands of jobs across the UK.” See below the progress the Cluster has made to date!
