This October brings a major milestone in our history here at Gallagher. Fifty years ago, in October 1974, we opened our first office in London – co-founding Lloyd’s broker Gallagher, Hinton and Vereker to better access the London market’s specialism in excess coverage for our clients. A key development that has since underpinned our story of international expansion and specialty insurance strength. We are proud to have been named the largest UK general insurance broker and the first to break the £1bn revenue barrier by Insurance Age, based on an independent analysis by its partner Insuramore Ltd. In revealing its annual 2024 rankings this month, the team at Age said the latest findings were notable for a number of reasons: “First, Gallagher UK has become the first broker to break the £1bn barrier in terms of UK non-life broking revenue. Second, while 42 previously listed firms are upwardly mobile in jumping at least one banding in 2024, only 10 have gone backwards, showing a market that appears in relatively rude health.” As recently as 15 years ago, Gallagher in the UK was primarily a London-based specialty broking business. Since then, through acquisition, organic growth and huge investment in our people and platforms we have one of the largest UK-wide networks.
