The findings of a recent BSI global survey suggest that the public agrees. 76% say medicines are a national security product and should therefore be prioritised in the allocation of water supply. We are pleased to announce the upcoming standard, PAS 2090 – Pharmaceutical products: Product category rules for environmental lifecycle assessments (LCA), supported by NHS England, Department of Health and Social Care Office of Life Sciences and the Pharma LCA Consortium. With a growing need to address environmental impact of medicines across the lifecycle, this new standard will provide the pharmaceutical industry and its stakeholders (healthcare system procurers, academia, investors, and regulators) with a consistent methodology to carry out lifecycle assessments for measuring the environmental footprint of medicines, ensuring transparency, and facilitating greener procurement practices. The standard is a consensus-led effort, with input from experts from across the healthcare and life sciences ecosystem.
