Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the #ACFLeadersForum24, which was focused on strengthening the role of trusts and foundations in addressing the climate and nature crisis. If you missed the event, here’s a snapshot of key takeaways 👇 1. Baroness Brown Julia King DBE FREng FRS kicked off the event by highlighting the urgent need for adaptation in today’s climate crisis. As is becoming increasingly evident, climate change is not a distant threat, it is happening now, and it is affecting us in the UK, so we need mitigation AND adaptation (which also has the benefit of creating much needed secure jobs!) 2. The highlight of the day for me was the excellent Changemaker panel hosted by Zoe Sprigings. Roger Harding and Kamran Shezad emphasised the crucial but often challenging work of engaging communities in climate action, reflecting so much of what we’ve been exploring with our UK place-based clients recently around starting with what communities need, not what we think they need. 3. And I could not close this post without talking about the workshop Dr. Daniela Lloyd-Williams and I led, featuring Clare Ballantine from the Howden Foundation, on effectively engaging your board on climate and nature issues. 🤓 The session helped attendees think about practical strategies to get climate action on their Trustees’ agenda and make meaningful progress. Check out the comments for a document we circulated on our top tips for engaging foundation boards on the climate crisis. I hope other participants also left the event embracing a sense of urgency for the climate crisis while practicing patience for the deep systemic changes we need to make in tackling its root causes. What is the true value of DEI initiatives? In a recent podcast episode of our CIPS Futures Podcast, my co-host Emma and I had the opportunity to chat with CIPS’ head of global trustees, Alison Barto. We had a wonderful chat – I’d recommend you give it a listen. One of the topics we spoke about was whether Alison had experienced any hurdles getting into procurement due to her gender. I won’t rehash what she’s said, as I think it’s best heard in her own voice, but I’d like to chat about something that struck me while chatting with her. A greater diversity in leadership, management, and the workforce doesn’t “just” improve creativity, agility, communication, and so forth… It removes barriers for others who follow in your footsteps. What Alison – and so many others – did by cracking that glass ceiling was to show the world: “Yes! We can!” Regardless of biases, unconscious attitudes, or even outright discrimination – they’ve made it easier for the rest of us to follow. So, to Alison, and all the rest – thank you. You’ve shown how DEI can identify and remove barriers we didn’t know existed – until you smashed them. #Procurement #SupplyChain #Leadership
