Exciting news for Hartlepool❗❕ 📰 A couple of months ago X-energy UK and Cavendish Nuclear were awarded £3.34m by the UK government to explore the feasibility of building a nuclear reactor in the area. This funding aims to help decarbonise local industry by providing low-carbon steam. 💹 The funding comes from the Future Nuclear Enabling Fund, which supports advancing nuclear technologies. The goal is to construct 12 reactors by the early 2030s, contributing to the UK’s national targets for increased nuclear generation.♻️♻️🔋⚡🔋 X-Energy and Cavendish Nuclear will match the government funding, focusing on assessing domestic manufacturing and supply chain opportunities. They will collaborate with Kier Group, Sheffield Forgemasters, and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Centre to ensure that UK firms receive 80% of the project's value. 🏭 Mick Gornall, managing director of Cavendish Nuclear, highlighted the potential of the Xe-100 reactors to complement renewable energy sources by providing consistent power and steam, which can help decarbonise various industrial processes, including the production of hydrogen and synthetic fuels. 💧⚛🧪 The innovative Xe-100 reactor design uses fuel pebbles the size of billiard balls, each containing thousands of uranium particles. These reactors, capable of producing 320 MW of electricity or 200 MW of heat, are currently under regulatory review in the US and Canada, with plans to engage with UK regulators soon. With the Aerospace Manufacturing recruitment market facing challenges this year, one might assume that finding candidates would be straightforward. After all, there should be plenty of qualified individuals eager for roles, right? Well, it's not as simple as you might think. I’ve been speaking with a couple of clients this past week who have both had vacancies open for nearly 3 months. Despite their efforts in candidate sourcing through ads, in-house talent teams, and external agencies, they have not been successful. They were surprised by the lack of suitable candidates, especially given the current market conditions. However, their responses to this situation were quite different. The first client admitted they were searching for a "unicorn" candidate but were unwilling to relax any of their requirements. They are content to keep searching for their perfect match—well, three perfect matches, in fact—for as long as it takes. The second client was more open to adapting based on market feedback. After our discussion, they narrowed their requirements to the essentials and even relaxed the need for specific industry experience, which is quite rare in Aerospace Manufacturing recruitment. I'm not suggesting that one approach is right and the other wrong. It largely depends on the circumstances at the time. How urgent is the role? How much time do you have to train new hires? But I do know which client is more likely to fill their vacancies quickly. So, if you're recruiting now, don’t assume it will be easy. It probably won’t be. Yes, there are quite a few Aerospace Manufacturing professionals currently out of work. But the chances are, they’re not your unicorn. Adapt to the market. Reevaluate your selection criteria. Do you really need to embark on a unicorn hunt? Let's focus on helping talented individuals return to work rather than creating unnecessary barriers.
