Over the years, our companies (K&J Growth & Rugby Bricks) have featured in Forbes and outlets closer to home, like the Herald & The Spinoff. Here is the method we use to get #PR for free: 1. Create newsworthy content. > The media picks up three things: - Content that is time sensitive - Content around a noteworthy person - Content that stirs up strong emotions > Here are examples of each of these three themes: - Strong Emotions: Creating in-house research that surrounds a hot topic that people are talking about - workplace productivity (e.g Xero does this with their State of The Industry Report) - Note Worthy Person + Time Sensitive: If you aren't Xero and don’t have 240,000 SMBs on your books, you can niche down by targeting a specific individual who has some form of authority and link this to a trending news topic An example was when Peter interviewed All Black Aaron Smith on the Rugby Bricks podcast. The interview occurred three weeks after the All Blacks exited the Rugby World Cup semi-finals in 2019 - this was a combination of a noteworthy person + time-sensitive information. With this in hand, you need to move to pitching. 2. Pitching - Go to Google and type “publication + category + writer” - Go to the list of journalists - Grab their email or X (Twitter) handle - Do this with a competitor to the publisher you are targeting (e.g If you want to get into the Herald, also grab a journalist email from Stuff) - Send your pitch to their email with a headline that looks like this (Noteworthy Person + Time Sensitive Topic) - e.g Aaron Smith World Cup Podcast to both publications - In the body, use copy that explicitly mentions both things: "Kia ora Eduan, I got your email from the Herald website. We’ve just done a podcast with All-Black Aaron Smith about the recent World Cup exit. Is this something you’d be interested in covering?” - If you don't get a reply from either journo, ratchet up the pressure by mentioning a competitor: "I've had a writer from the team at Stuff reply. Do you want to cover this exclusively?" Rinse and repeat the above process with as many newsworthy content ideas as possible until you land an article. P.S - If you want to land a noteworthy guest, here is the script I use: "Kia ora (first name), I love what you are doing (whatever they are good at). I’m working on (an industry XYZ about the work they are good at), which I want to be up by (put in the media outlet you are targeting). I’d love to quote you on this and will happily pay for your time for 15 minutes. No stress if not. The Olympics is something I always look forward to. The sporting action is unparalleled and I love every second of it. The comparisons between sporting success and business success that keep appearing on my LinkedIn feed, not so much. While I don't deny there are lessons to be learned from the world of sports, most articles and posts ignore some fundamental differences. Sports, particularly at the highest levels, is all about winning, that singular moment when you stand on the highest step of the podium. There's seldom such objective clarity in business. Success is never about that one single event, as Simon Sinek says in his The Infinite Game. While being aware of competition is important, it's not what builds iconic organizations, or legacies. Athletes who win trained hard for years. They have determination and drive. They have grit. But none of this will get you an Olympic medal if you don't have natural talent. The real job of a manager is to get the best out of a diverse group of people. And in many cases, the manager will realize a maverick is actually a liability. The bottom line is, there's no simple formula for success. Hell, there's not even a matric that everyone can agree on. So enough of the allegories and syllogisms. Can't wait for LA 2028 to start!

As part of the launch of our 'Team Pulse' report, in which we explore the vital elements for high performing teams, we wanted to take a look at famous examples from the past. Today we're taking the PULSE of the Apollo 11 crew, famous for the first landing on the moon 55 years ago and an inspiring example of what can be achieved when teams fulfil their potential. PURPOSE: ✅ An obvious tick in this box - when Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the lunar surface it was the culmination of a journey that began with JFK's famous words "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard". UNTIY: ✅ The crew of Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, were famously very different personalities. All three were incredibly high achieving individuals who were highly competitive and with bucket loads of ambition. This would be the source of division and conflict in many teams but they trusted each other and were an extremely tight unit. LEADERSHIP: ✅ Whilst Armstrong was officially the Commander of the crew and therefore made some of the final decisions related to the mission, he also deferred to either Collins or Aldrin when they were in a better position to lead on a specific step of the journey. SYSTEMS: ✅ The technology involved in the Apollo 11 mission was cutting edge back in 1969 but now it doesn't even compare to the processing power of an average smartphone. The real operating success of this team was in the planning, preparation and intensive training to established clear processes, protocols and agreed ways of working. EVOLUTION: ✅ The success of the first moon landings was ultimately the legacy of all the previous Apollo missions. Each tiny detail from rocket technology through to astronaut nutrition had been carefully calibrated from experiments and testing of previous crews. Furthermore all future Apollo missions that followed built upon the successes of this pioneering team.
